This is an all volunteer no kill facility whose goal is to find loving, stable homes for the kitties under their care. Yes, they have pretty stringent requirements for potential adopters, but the goal is to find permanent homes so that the kitties don't become homeless again. All of the visitation and adoption rules are in place, not to prevent access to the cats, but to protect them and are not at all unreasonable. The kitties are wonderfully socialized by the 2 shifts of volunteers who come in each day. The volunteers get to know the kitties quite well and can help match potential adopters to kitties who would fit in well with their particular household. In my experience it was not a good one. The director or ??? decided because I was 60 I should have an older cat with a respiratory issue. I was hoping for a younger kitten or cat. The gal kept talking about my age as it was a huge issue. I am an active person and left without a pet. read more

Cat Angels has relocated to its new location on Harrison and Maynard. I had high hopes of bumping it up a star. I'm disappointed that I've had to kick it down. This is one of the cat adoption places insisting on paperwork being completed before they'll let you meet the cats. While I always understood this was an insurance issue, apparently it's not -- at least here. At this stage, I'm only interested in seeing the animals, I'm not ready to adopt and therefore saw no need to answer many of the questions on the form that are irrelevant until I'm ready to do so. The manager and I didn't seem to agree and I left not seeing a single animal -- unless I wanted to do so through a glass door -- a pointless option when I wanted to meet them personally. It was a polite exchange so there was no issue on that account. She was passionate about her position and I respect that. For me, although the facility seems like a definite upgrade from the last location, and I had hoped to see how things were improved and expanded and meet some of the residents, I saw no reason why my "browsing" required my agreement for them to call my current vet or agree to a home visit in order for me to even see a cat when I'm not there to adopt. I completely understand the concerns with making sure these animals find and keep a good home and are not sent to live (or die) with some nut-job, but do not understand how depriving them of the ability to meet or socialize with a variety of people under staff supervision requires something just short of credit and background checks. This appears to be a "questionable" business and has been reported to the Better Business Bureau. I appreciate that these little cats need a loving home and wanted to help out and adopt one, rather than go to a breeder. It took me 13 years to recover emotionally from losing my last pet, and felt ready for a new one. I filled out the "cat adoption application". Someone named "Kimberly Thomas" emailed me and requested that I supply my "current vet names". I explained that the last vet was in San Diego almost 13 years ago! This started a chain of utterly ridiculous exchange of emails. I actually called the Veterinarian in SD (of course he'd retired), and they laughed when I requested 20 year records on rabies and wellness visits. I explained this to "Kimberly". She then wanted my "current vets". I explained that my aquarium fish don't really go to the vet for shots and/or wellness visits (the irony seemed to escape her). She emailed me that "I was not a match" for their stray cat adoption program! Imagine this: I'm a NC Licensed teacher (which comes with a current CRIMINAL background check!), a Mom, new Grandmother, head of an animal rescue group, an Officer in the PGW, have no other pets in the home, etc., etc. but yet not "qualified" to bring home and nourish and love a cat headed for euthanization! I hope "Kimberly" loses her job, as she is not bright enough to work there. Good luck with "adopting" your cats out. I've decided to not deal with "quaks " like this agency, and I'll spend $650 for a Siamese from a BREEDER! I hope they close you down. read more

I have had cats for more than 40 years and they questioned my ability to take care of a cat. They also gave me vet advice even though I have been to the vet. I don't usually review, in fact this is my first on Yelp, but I felt compelled to in this particular instance. You see 6 years ago we adopted 2 wonderful little kitties from Cat Angels with little issue. Our experience was like most, we submitted our application via the website, we were called to come see some kitties, and then we went home with 2 very rambunctious littermates. If that would have been the end of the story, my review would be a 5 star review. BUT -- In the 6 years since our adoption we have sent a few different friends, couples, and relatives over to Cat Angels. Each walking away either empty handed because of the strictest of details on the application, the interviewer asking questions that even thier employer didn't ask (and they work in an IT job that deals with government files,) or being told they are too old to adopt. The last one is the one that bothered me the most. All the others shrugged off the tight adoption requirements and all of as laughed at them over dinner. (We have gotten asked if our cats poop gold and that's the reason for the high level of clearance. My answer is always the same: "No, but everytime my cat pukes he thinks he is magical. 'Look I make food!'" But the two people that thier odd adoption rules seemed to hurt most were my in-laws. I know there are so many people out there who don't like their in-laws or don't care what they think, but I love mine. They are incredible people. When we sent my MIL to Cat Angels it was with the idea that the people at Cat Angels usually know the personalities of the cats so well they could match her and my father-in-law with a kitty best suited to thier lifestyle. Instead of telling them upfront that their age might be an issue to adoption, they allowed both of them to go back into the kitten room and see the kitties. To which a kitty picked them (my in-laws) and they picked her out. It was kismet. Cat Angels boxed the kitten up and then went and did the application and THAT was when they were told they could not have the 5 or 6 month old kitten. At this point the person who was doing the application process also started treating my mother-in-law differently. She became short and impatient with her. My MIL asked her if the problem was what would happen to the kitty if they died she said that her son and daughter-in-law would care for the cat. The lady goes, "Well they are not here to vouch for you." Seriously?! My MIL offered to call us during the application process and the person told her, "No. Just come back next weekend." I will put this out there: my MIL and FIL are very young 72 and 73 year olds. They should not have to 'get permission ' from their kid to get a cat. I was so heartbroken when my MIL called here in tears and said for the first time in her life someone treated her like she was an old person who didn't matter. Shame on you Cat Angels. I know you want to get your kitties into good homes but maybe you need to take a good hard look at yourselves and how you do that. My husband and I have been directing each of our Amazon Smile accounts to you since its inception, it may be time to find another worthy local charity to donate to as well. read more

My husband grew up with cats but I had never had one. We had discussed adding one to our brood (we have two small dogs) but I was worried since I did not know what to expect. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon Cat Angels Pet Adoptions a few months ago while mailing a package next door. We filled out an application and met some of the cats. Right from the start, I knew this was a well run shelter. It was clear that the cats were happy in their clean surroundings. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and friendly. We left with a lot to think about. I started volunteering there and was welcomed even though I had a lack of knowledge about felines. I found out just what a tight ship it is. There is a protocol involved with every aspect of the volunteering. They follow guidelines in order to ensure the safety of the animals. There is documentation of everything that goes on from cleaning to giving medications. These cats are loved by all of the volunteers and it shows. You should check out the wonderful pictures of the cuties on their website! Because we have dogs, we decided a kitten was our best bet although I admit that at times, I feel guilty because all of the cats are amazing at this shelter. The kitten we adopted was found with his two siblings and no mother so was fostered by on of the volunteers until he was old enough for the shelter. We are in love with him and it feels like he has been with us forever. He gets along great with the dogs too! I really enjoy volunteering and giving the kitties some love on a regular basis. I wanted to adopt two beautiful cats from there, but they gave me the run around, by making me provide proof that I paid my pet fee in my apartment complex. Seriously? Don't they want to get rid of these cats and find them loving homes? Also, after deciding not to go ahead with the adoption, I never got my pet adoption fee refunded which was over 200 dollars! First of all, Cat Angels is not a business. They rely on donations and volunteers to find homes for their cats, the cats are altered, ID chipped, and given the love and care required to have the cat ready for a loving home. Takes time and lots of effort to maintain a shelter physically, emotionally, and financially. The Cat Angels team, as other reputable no-kill shelters, do a fantastic job finding a good match for their adoptable cats. They truly look for a perfect prospective adopter and a future home by taking in all considerations for the present and future of the animal. That's love and devotion, folks. They have a criteria for a good home match and they don't waiver from it. Good for them! More happy pets and owners that way. About 10 years ago, I passed their vetting process and adopted a female red bobtail. I've always loved my cats getting them their annual vet care and keeping them indoors. Sure they go out on a screened balcony away from predators and fleas, which helps lots with vet bills. She is wonderful and I wish everyone could have such a wonderful family member as my cat, Michaela, is for me. read more

I first adopted a rescued kitten three years ago from Cat Angels and could not have been more impressed with the organization. Many of the volunteers go out to rescue cats and kittens from "kill shelters" that euthanize unadoptable felines, and then these rescues are given medical care and fostered in volunteers' homes. They are well-socialized in their foster homes and at the Cat Angels shelter. I'm very impressed with the care they give every single cat. Because I know that each and every cat is so well-cared-for (I can still tell people there three years later that I'm Wolfie's mom and they know exactly what a rascal he is!), earlier this year I adopted a former street cat and a small kitten who was rescued from the home of a cat hoarder who had more than 100 cats. The Cat Angels folks and I spent much time creating good matches, taking the personalities of my existing two cats into consideration and making sure that any special needs could be met. I spent a good deal of time with my new forever friends, Pumpkin and Ingmar, before I adopted them. So I know from firsthand experience that they received top-notch medical care and were well-socialized, thanks to the way Cat Angels volunteers spend time caring for the cats and making sure that they're housed with compatible cats while they're waiting for adoption. All of my Cat Angels adoptees were microchipped, spayed/neutered, tested for every possible illness, and treated for fleas and worms and whatnot. Likewise, Cat Angels was responsible in making sure that I have veterinary care at the ready to keep my kitteh family healthy over the years to come. They contacted my vet to ensure that I've been taking care of my other pets and am prepared for a checkup after I adopted. One thing I've never experienced at any other pet adoption center is the aftercare provided: the warmth and love that the volunteers show for the adoptees in the weeks, months, and even years after adoption. If I ever have a question about anything, I can give them a call or zap an email and know I'll get an answer in a jiffy. It's so helpful to speak with someone who actually spent scores or even hundreds of hours with my cats and knows exactly the individual cat I'm talking about -- their personalities, their antics, their special likes and dislikes. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!! They are more interested in collecting cats than finding good homes for them. I have had cats since I was born and have always loved them. My parents foster cared for cats for many years. Once I moved out on my own I adopted cats from people who couldn't take care of them any more. The youngest cat I had was 10 years old. The other 2 I had were both 12 years old. Since I knew their owners I was always provided with their medical histories. All 3 cats lived to ripe old ages (15, 18, & 19 to be exact). They were never sick so I didn't have a vet. This fact is important later. My wife and I went in Saturday to adopt a cat. We just spent 6 months cat sitting a cat who hates other animals so we waited until he went home. He had kidney problems and required 2 pills a day. I filled out their application and explained to them that I didn't have a vet. We could get one no problem however. They took us in the back and that's where I made the biggest mistake. I fell in love with their mascot who was actually adoptable. Our chemistry was perfect and even the staff noted it. From that point on every attempt was made to find me unacceptable. They harped on a vet check even though I told them I didn't have one. The next day I got an email again harping on a vet check. It's like asking for a picture of your daughter over and over when you only have a son. In the end they got their way and I gave up. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

I have adopted two feline family members from Cat Angels (when I lived in the area). Have checked out numerous rescue groups in two different states, and this is by far the best cat-only group I've found. It's completely no-kill, non-profit, volunteer run and the cats there receive amazing care from the humans. Everyone lives in a community room with other cats, and compared to some shelters the cats are extremely well socialized with both humans and other cats. All cats they adopt out are spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on vaccines and flea prevention and checked out regularly by a vet who visits on-site. The value of all this is much greater than the adoption fee. Had a chance to check out the new facility during a recent trip to Cary, and am very excited for Cat Angels. It's very clean, relatively spacious and functional for the volunteer staff. Every organization that works to address the problem of homeless animals plays a role in the solution, but for me Cat Angels does it best. Both of the cats I adopted had some medical issues and might have been euthanized by another shelter, but Cat Angels gave them the time and care to get them healthy and find their forever homes. They are super anal about everything. Make you fill out paperwork and ask you 100 questions before you can even think about just looking. And if they don't like one your answers you get Denied. They wanted to know my previous cats vet records back from 5 years ago. I told the lady that my cat has been dead for 2 years and the vet clinic they he used to go to got closed down a long time ago because the vet committed suicide a while ago. I found out that this shelter will only allow those who are US citizens to adopt a cat. It is ridiculous with so many cats needing loving homes that they think that if someone is a non-US citizen (green card, other viable visa status) that they are not worthy of adopting a cat from them. If someone is currently residing in this country and meets all of their other stringent requirements (vet check, previous history of taking care of a cat, etc.), they should not be told to go to another shelter and denied the ability to adopt. Because of this, I will no longer donate to this shelter and have found other no-kill shelters in this area who do not have this discriminatory policy. read more

I have adopted from here twice and used to be a volunteer. I really appreciate how much everyone here cares about the cats. When you adopt, you can get continued support, ask questions, or just send them pictures, which everyone loves! The team here will do anything for the cats, and go above and beyond in health care. The cats get socialization and lots of love. The main problem with volunteering is wanting to either cuddle them all day after shift, but is a great reward for a little work. I have lived in other cities where a place like this does not exist, everything is county run shelters or foster programs. With the cat rooms, you get to see the personality of the cats and get to know a cat more than you can from a cage. Whether you are looking to adopt or volunteer, I recommend Cat Angels. read more

The volunteers are very knowledgeable about the cats and their personalities and help potential adopters to find a good match. If you don't find just the one you are looking for, they will also guide you to other shelters where you might find a better match. Like all private shelters, there is an application process to make sure that potential adopters will be able to continue to care for the kitties, provide a stable environment, and not place them in potentially dangerous situations. We just adopted a beautiful cat from Cat Angels. It was an easy process. I disagree with the disgruntled yelpers that have left negative reviews. This adoption process was no different than others I have experienced. If you qualify to adopt, you can add a wonderful cat to your family. If you don't qualify, then you might be directed to a shelter with less strict qualifications. The ladies here are looking for forever homes for these kitties. I am shocked to read so many terrible reviews! I had a wonderful experience with Cat Angels. I contacted them by email on a Saturday asking if they could help me with a feral cat I had been caring for. I was so surprised when they wrote back within a few hours asking for more information. I answered their questions and said I would wait to hear back from them. Sunday morning they sent an email saying they would like to have one of their volunteers stop by with a humane trap. I was amazed at how quickly they offered to help. Their volunteer brought the trap over and we began the process of catching this sweet kitty. It took 6 days and during that time their volunteers helped with everything from re-setting the trap (we caught a possum one morning) to supplying sardines. They would come by at 7am if needed. I was thrilled on the morning of day 6 to find Midnight (that's the name I gave him) inside the trap!! The volunteer I was working with came over immediately (at 7:45am) to take Midnight to the Cat Angels shelter. She sent me photos of him all safe and warm and well fed in his cat condo. He was going to be quarantined for 2 weeks and then he would be neutered and socialized before being up for adoption. I was so very happy with everything! I am planning to visit Midnight soon. I never thought I would find an organization that would help with a feral cat. I was wrong and I am so thankful that I contacted Cat Angels. For those of you who feel they require too much before approving you, I have to say I think it is wonderful that they are so cautious. I highly recommend them!! read more

Cat Angels is not interested in what is best for cats - they are only interested in forcing their anti-nature views on people. They enjoy advertising that they are not an evil kill shelter, but at the same time, if they don't accept you, they are happy to refer you to the county kill shelter. I was incensed at being turned down, after being a loving cat owner for decades. The reason: I filled out their application honestly and said I intended to let the cats be indoor/outdoor. They will not let you adopt if you intend to let your cat roam, as cats are evolved to do. So I took their advice and adopted from the county shelter, where the fees were MUCH lower, the people are dedicated to solving a problem, and I felt good about easing their load. County shelters are crowded with animals who desperately need a good home. Cat Angels doesn't care much about getting pets into good homes - they're only interested in pushing their politics, so they are ineffective and solve no problems. If you must have a cat from Cat Angels, you should lie on your application. Otherwise, please visit your county shelter, where you can truly make a difference. read more

Cat Angels gave me back my smile! Or, I should say that Cubby and Trixie--the two kitties we adopted--filled our house with love and joy. A few months after losing the last of our senior cats to a brain tumor, we stopped by the shelter to donate medical supplies. The staff let me visit with the cats, and that's when I discovered a whole new adoption experience. I've never been to any animal shelter where everyone knows the pets so intimately. The volunteers seemed familiar with every cat's history and personality, and it was clear how much they adored each and every one. I was not prepared to make a hasty decision, and Cat Angels allowed me as many visits as I needed to get to know the cats. When I had made my tentative choices, they put the cats on hold for me, which gave me a few days to reflect on my selections. When we picked up the cats, they were each provided with tote bags full of supplies: medical records, helpful instructions, litter, dry food, wet food, and supplements. The dry food actually lasted us several months, as we transitioned them over to a diet recommended by our vet. At their first vet checkup, it was obvious how healthy they were and what good care they had received in the shelter. I'd also like to highlight how well socialized Cat Angels' cats are. They literally swarmed over me, lavishing affection, which is just what I needed after losing our beloved kitty! There is nothing aloof about the kitties at Cat Angels, which speaks to the personal attention they receive from the staff. read more

I recently adopted a kitten from Cat Angels and had a great experience. I saw two of Frosti's siblings on WRAL one day as their Pets of the Day. The kittens were so laid back, just sitting in the person's lap. I had been thinking about adopting a cat.I filled out an adoption form, even though I was not sure I would adopt from there. I went to see the kittens there and was impressed with the care and concern for health of the animals and that they vetted me to be sure I would take good care of one I might adopt. It was obvious that the kittens and cats get care and attention from people who not only connect with them but who genuinely love them as well. They sent me home with lots of information, food so that Frosti (now Callie) would not have any digestive issues with a change in food, health records and even a chip. Their instructions for introduction into her new home was right on target. Just as they said, Callie, let me know when she was ready to explore more than one room in our home. Callie is the most loving cat I have ever had. She has a sweet disposition and even likes my grandsons. My husband and I love watching the things she does everyday. I would recommend Cat Angels to anyone and would use them again! read more

We adopted our cat, Patches, from Cat Angels a couple of years ago. The volunteers there work hard to make a good match between the cats and the folks who come in to adopt. It is obvious that they truly love the cats. The cats are very well socialized and are as medically ready as it is possible to be before adoption. The cats are up-to-date on shots, have been microchipped, de-flea'ed, dewormed, spayed or neutered, and tested for feline leukemia, FIV and ringworm. There is a support system for adopters as well; if you have any problems or cat-related questions, all you need to is phone or email for advice. Can't get better than this!! read more

I love Cat Angels, and they truly live up to their name. I have gotten 4 of my furbabies from there over the past 8 1/2 years. I am impressed with not only how clean and well run the facility is, but also with how loved all the cats are there. Three of my cats were "special needs" cats and, if they had never been adopted, would have always had a loving home there. I found Cat Angels because my vet is their vet, and he thought one of the cats and I should meet. Needless to say, she came home with me. I also know that all the cats there get excellent veternary care and are up to date with shots, etc. I saw that some people reviewing do not like that they have to fill out applications and have a vet. This is yet another reason why I respect CA - they want to make sure that the cats are going to really great homes who understand all that is required for caring for cats. I refer all my friends there for their kitties. My cats will, hopefully, be with me for many more years, but, when that time comes, I will go to CA for the next family member. read more
