One of the first red flags was that Lisa does not operate under a written contract. Without a contract outlining scope, expectations, or process, important details were not clarified -- including that the original slipcovers would not be returned once deconstructed. That lack of documentation created confusion and avoidable issues later in the project. The project ultimately spanned more than six months for what should have been a straightforward slipcover job. During that time, requirements changed (she initially stated she would not need the chairs, then later required them), and portions of the work were completed by a "stitcher." The slipcovers that were delivered were inconsistent in sizing, puckered, misaligned, and only one fit properly. We returned them for correction. The final attempt removed the originally promised zipper construction and replaced it with a folded pocket bottom. The slipcovers were returned with oil stains and continued construction issues. When concerns were raised, the explanation given was that the fabric was stiff and difficult to work with. However, the issues were not related to fabric drape -- they were workmanship problems. Even after multiple rounds of revisions, Lisa maintained that she delivered the product as discussed. At the end of this process, the slipcovers were unusable, despite being fully paid for. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this workroom for slipcover construction. Clear contracts, consistent workmanship, and accountability are essential in this industry.

It seems everyone wanted to redecorate at the same time! I started working with a designer, Joanna Tisko, last October. She helped me design an odd shaped room and guided me through the decision making process. She was able to provide and excellent design and choice of fabrics, styles and furniture pieces. She matched my new window treatments and was so careful in explaining the details of this transaction to me. We are still awaiting delivery but the kid glove treatment I have received from her and her associates has given me the reassurance I need to patiently wait for the arrival of my furniture. But in the last couple years, everything's gone downhill. The furniture isn't just "gently used" anymore - it's flat-out DIRTY! I could even deal with that if they'd lower prices, but the staff's attitude is the real problem. Service quality varies between stores, but Hanover (my old favorite) has gotten terrible. I do NOT recommend shopping here. I'll sum it up by saying some of the staff are a little too outspoken and mean-spirited in front of customers. The last time, ever, I shopped at FCG was very uncomfortable. This store's management needs to remember that customers have ears.

We have recently completed a major pool/patio area renovation. One of the first things we had to decide (out of so many things!) was the type of pavers we wanted for the pool apron and patio area. Our landscape/masonry company recommended Back Yard Living and Patti in particular. One can easily become overwhelmed at the sheer number of paver selections...various types and colors of stone abound. We took an initial walk through the store as well as outside where they have extensive examples laid out. We eventually narrowed things down but it was Patti who ultimately knew what questions to ask us and helped steer us to our final selection. The pavers and borders have since been installed and we couldn't be happier. We had to return to the store to decide on new pool coping. We hated the pool coping style that was there originially. There are a number of pool edges to choose from. We thought we wanted a flat edge but are happy we went with the "coastal cape design" that Patti showed us and recommended. We had a great experience here.

As soon as you drive into the ample parking lot, you are greeted with a working waterfall, the first of many located throughout the Garden Center. The front area of the Garden Center is filled with flowering and evergreen shrubs and smaller sized flowering trees. To the left of this area across the driveway are some of the most beautiful Japanese Red Maples and White Birch you will find in the area. They are all landscape size plants but small enough to take home with you, although delivery is available. You can also find an ample selection of white pine, blue spruce, fir, and Emerald Green Arborvitaes, perfect for screening out that neighbor or providing privacy on your deck. Across from the tree and shrub area is the entrance to the store chock full of your lawn, shrub and tree needs, be they seed, fertilizer or insect, weed and disease control as well as gardening tools. What's really nice inside are the bird feeders and houses, whimsical animal watering cans, wind chimes, sculptures and so much more including outdoor furniture. Walk to the back of the store and enter a courtyard with another waterfall and pond with Koi. The courtyard has birdbaths and fountains and is full of seasonal flowers with brick walkways leading to spacious greenhouses to the left and right filled with hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, houseplants and pottery. Outside the right facing greenhouse is an ample selection of sun and shade loving perennials including your favorites as well as choices you may have never seen before. The Gardener's Choice also carries Coast of Maine products including Lobster Compost and Earthworm castings. They also carry Scotts, Miracle Gro, and Jonathan Green. Need a shed? The Gardener's Choice is an authorized reseller for Walpole Woodworks with sheds on site to choose from. One recent addition is a full service independent florist which is located inside the Garden Center building. It is a great convenience to be able to order arrangements or take them with you on your visit. While there, be sure to sign up for their esalesletter which features money saving coupons once or twice a month. They also have a new Facebook page with monthly gardening tips which can also be found on their website at www.thegardenerschoice.net. I had driven by this store MANY times over the years and never stopped in. My housemate raved about…read morethe store one day and I popped in. I was really impressed when I walked into the store. For some reason, I thought the merchandise was going to be very country/ crafty/ new age-y but it was so much more! They have a smattering of things - clothing, independent artist wares - wall decor, handblown glass, small batch food items, jewelry and garden decor. I have bought wall art, metal candle votives, plant holders and air plants, gems, incense holders and oracle cards. The owners Robyn and Bob and employee Sarah are all VERY nice and helpful.. In a world of mass produced, cookie-cut things, it is refreshing to see independent, smaller-scale selection. They are always getting in new items so even though I go every other day as a break from work, there is always new stuff coming in.
