I submitted a request online and I was contacted via phone in a day or two. I was able to work with Alex, who then scheduled an appointment for a free specimen pick up and inspection. They were helpful in answering my questions regarding my situation. Alex arrived within the specified time window, used shoe covers per my preference, and even checked one of the insulation areas/attic to check for any possible bird or rat activity, since I suspected bird mites were the culprit. He also placed sticky traps in the room that was affected, in case more samples could be checked. About 1-2 days after the inspection, Alex confirmed what bugs were identified based on the samples: bird mites carpet beetle, and booklouse. I scheduled a return inspection since I captured more samples in a jar, and to get the sticky traps checked one more time before I reach out to pest control to ensure nothing else can be the culprit(s) behind my bug bites. I really appreciate the services provided by Alameda County and Alex, as it is really helpful to me during this stressful time.

A new neighbor moved in a left a refrigerator, bathroom sink, mattresses, and assorted junk in front of their house. I was not just concerned about the blight, but a refrigerator is unsafe for small children. They could get trapped or injured playing near it. My neighbor talked with the new owner who told her to "fu*k off!" I decided to contact the city. There's a 311 website to report illegal dumping. I instead looked up the phone number and called. A kind woman took the information down. She advised me the call was going to be recorded. The next afternoon, the junk has been removed. I don't know if the city picked it up or told the neighbor he was going to be charged with illegal dumping and endangerment. Nice when your tax dollars work efficiently!

We've got two old, broken toilets that need replacing. My handy husband plans to do the work…read morehimself, so we were in Home Depot looking for replacements. In the checkout line, we happened to run into our plumber, so I asked him if we'd picked a decent toilet (what do we know?). We hadn't. Our plumber told us about a rebate program through BAWSCA through June 30, 2009 that we could get $150 back on qualifying high efficiency (HET) toilets. Here's the link for the list of qualifying toilets: http://www.bawsca.org/docs/UNAR_HET_April_2009.pdf. If we can turn a $150 toilet into a free toilet and save water, that's great. There are basically two conditions needed to qualify: * 1.28 gallons per flush or less * 500g or more MaP performance (how much waste it can remove in a single flush) If you want to take advantage of this particular rebate program, get thee to the hardware store! You've got two weeks to get your new toilet. BAWSCA has other rebates for washing machines and water-saving tips. The website is worth a visit. Now we need to figure out what to do with our old toilets.

The county public works are horrible. It was a nightmare to get ADU planning through the planning…read moredepartment. The city inspectors bang their chest and are rude. For one inspection they decided to call last minute and cancel. Then we had this older rude inspector named Arnold Gee. He is the rudest inspector I have ever dealt with. I have been a contractor for over 25 years. He takes the title. First of all, he is always rude and barking at you. My worker asked him a question nicely and he went off on him and said you should know that. The problem is that Alameda County has higher expectations than the California code. He wanted sand under the pipe. Which is no problem. My worker just asked how much. Then he just went off and left. Then it took him 3 days to write a simple correction notice. When we called again; he saw no sand and went off and yelled this inspection is over. When I asked for clarification or to show us the code he is talking about. He said he will send it. Right after that, I went down to public works. The receptionist was nice. She could not help me much. I tried to talk to the head inspector and he was not available. This is a disaster. I have had open trenches for over a week now. Since no one in the county wants to show their code. Inspector called my office and got into it with my office manager. What a mess.
