This was my first time at a Social Security office, and I drove 40 minutes to the San Leandro location because they had the earliest available appointment. Based on my experience, it was well worth the drive. I arrived 30 minutes early. I was sent a text message with a link to check-in when I arrived, so I checked in on my phone and went to the kiosk (which is on the left side of the entrance upon entering) to print out my ticket. They have a TV screen on the wall with a queue of ticket numbers, but they will announce your number when it's your turn over the intercom. The sound quality of the intercom isn't the best, so listen closely for your number. The waiting room is small, but thankfully it wasn't full. From my appointment time, it took about 20 minutes to be seen, and I was good to go after about 15 minutes. Essentially, my visit took only 35 minutes of my time. I spoke with two employees, and both were very pleasant. The gentleman who helped me update my social security card was very helpful and kind. He made sure to answer all my questions and advised me on how to proceed with my next steps. As other reviewers have stated, you MUST have an appointment. There are signs posted all over the office stating this. I highly suggest making an appointment online as it's the fastest and easiest method. As for parking, the parking lot is tiny. In the same plaza directly across from the office is a Mountain Mike's Pizza, which also has a row of parking. A majority of the parking spots directly in front of the office are handicap parking, so if you don't have a handicap placard, I suggest parking in the spots next to Mountain Mike's Pizza. Just be sure to enter from the main road because that is the only way you can enter that side of the parking lot. read more

Feels kind of weird to write a review for a government office on Yelp, but I feel like my experience there is worth it. Check-in was super easy on my phone and once my number was called, the person at the window was patient and pleasant. I got there about 10 minutes before opening and was in and out within 15 minutes of opening time. I would definitely recommend going before opening time and checking in using the QR code. I came here to simply change my last name as I got married. I did a walk in, signed at kiosk took a number to find out that this month Jan 2025 policy changed and you MUST have an appointment. I waited an hour to be told that over intercom. The security told us there were signs all over which were not very visible on a white paper with a QR code scattered. It be nice if they put it on the kiosk instead of waisting peoples time especially the elderly. We should not have to Easter egg hunt to find the papers in the room. Make it huge and clear at the entrance and on the kiosk next time! I also was on hold for 3hrs now to make an appointment.... Still no answer read more

Kevin was wonderful. I turned in some Medicare forms, and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. He also made an appointment for me to fill out a retirement form to receive more money. I had a great morning! read more

Wonderful system and service! You can make an appointment by calling SS but the wait time on hold for me was over an hour, so I decided to go to the office. I arrived about 15 minutes before they opened, scanned the QR code near the entrance, and checked in. When they opened at 9 am, there was only one person ahead of me in my category and I was called before I could even take a seat. I left the office ten minutes later. I am giving this place 2 stars because I was able to find parking easily and my wait time was not long. This was my 2nd attempt in trying to obtain my sons SS card. Hayward office would not accept a birth certificate as a valid/legal form of identification. So I present the other forms/documentation I was told they would accept only to be told NO and to be given contradictory information from what was advised to me at the Hayward office. So in the end I am glad I did not waste too much of my time however it still super frustrating and irritating that no one seems to be on the same page. read more

Got here 15 minutes before opening. 8 people in front of me. Doors open a little early. Like all SSA offices you wait in line the check in at the kiosk. They call your number go to the window. Except the check in person doesn't resolve your issue just check you in again?!?! Then go sit down and wait for your name to be called. This is where everything went bad. I saw at least 20 people in line behind me get called. Some out in 5 minutes. Still waiting. Person after person got called. After 1 1/2 hours (mind you I was 8th person in the door!) I called the SSA office. Got an agent, resolved my issue. Screw you San Leandro SSA - I just left never to return. 1* for the nice security guard. Now I understand why the reviews are mostly 1* or 5*. If you get triaged into a "good" queue you can get in and out pretty quick. If you're unlucky like me and get into the "cold day in hell" queue, that's exactly what it was. Cold, rainy day in hell. read more

Social Security operates similar to DMV but not as efficiently. unlike DMV, everyone smiles, is courteus, helpful. drill: go to self-service kiosk, answer SSN# and posted questions, depending on ur answers, u either go to check in window or designated window. wait for ur number to be called. line formed in morning. total time waiting- l hour. notes: -probably could have did it on line didn't find website. worried i might log onto "fake" website came across one not operated by U.S. government, fee based. -small parking lot... read more

I needed to finally change my name since getting married. Arrived on a Wednesday, waited in line about 30 minutes prior to them opening, sat, waited my turn and within 25 minutes of them opening, I was out of there. The lady was super friendly, quick and took care of what I needed. Easy peasy. Way better than the DMV! read more

This is the cleanest tidiest and well-lit Social Security Office I ever visited in Bay Area. Kudos to whoever manages this office. It has a post which says they can handle a capacity of 50 people. I needed to amend some info of my SS file. And end to end it took me 1 hour. Got myself a ticket from the kiosk for A - Other category, probably why it was fast. Staff was polite and helpful. Tip: parking lot is small suggest you park on side street instead. read more

Whoa, that was fast service! I anticipated a long wait time, similar to the DMV, but I was pleasantly surprised to be in and out in 15 minutes. I went on a weekday morning and didn't see many cars in the parking lot. Still, there were many butts in seats waiting to be helped. There's an electronic check in by the front door. The guard pointed at it when I walked in with a face that said, where do I go?! Quick tip: be prepared with all the paperwork and identification needed and it'll go quickly. I went in to change my name and was greeted with a friendly face, especially because I had everything prepared already. Another tip: they're located in a place where the parking lot is pretty small, but San Leandro has plenty of places near by and in walking distance if you can't find a spot in the plaza. Last tip: you're not allowed to talk on your cell phone while you're there. You can use it, but can't have convos while you're waiting inside. The guard will remind you :) read more

Almost 5.5 months after getting married, I finally got around to starting the processing of getting my name legally changed on all of my important documents/cards. The first step, changing my maiden name to my married name on my social security card. A few days ago, I called ahead to make an appointment. However, I was informed by the woman over the phone that my name change didn't require an appointment. Ok? Mind you, I waited over an hour to speak with someone. Today was my day off from work, so I made it a point to go to the office first thing in the morning. After entering the building, I checked in on the computer (located on the left of the entrance) and was given a number. I was expecting to wait all day, but to my surprise, the whole process took less than 20 minutes (waiting included). The woman that processed my paperwork shared with me that I came in on a good day, because the wait time would usually be over an hour. I was given a receipt and was told that I should receive my new social security card in 7-14 days. Social security card (done) Next is my drivers license, passport and bank card. Make sure you interact with the computer to your right the moment you enter. This is how you get a ticket/number. Expect a 1-2 hour stay regardless of what your doing. The office is very small and you'll often have to stand because there are only about 40 chairs. My experience wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. read more

I went to this social security and waited for 2 hours and when they finally called my number the woman in window 4 is so rude and no friendly at all ask question with very mean and rude manner . This person should not be working in dealing with people at all i hated coming to social security especially with bad experience if you want people who are friendly and efficient just go to social security hayward . There was a small line out the door when I showed up right before the office opened. My number was called immediately once I checked in. The officer forgot to put my number up on the monitor so I spent a few moments hopelessly trying to locate the origin of the voice calling my number. Luckily she saw me looking lost. She made me triple confirm everything before letting me go -- even then, I was out in less than 15 minutes! When you check in, you can skip entering your SSN and just hit the green button. read more

If we ran our private businesses like they do this office, we'd be out of business. They're rude, lost original documents that had me sent in, left my application hanging for months stating they had sent me letters but finally admitted the communications never went out. When I finally got a supervisor today, she was rude and it was apparent I was wasting her time with my concerns. Then she swears she's called me back twice and left messages. Funny thing is I have no missed calls and no messages. Asked her twice what number she's calling and twice she skirted the question by talking over me. Poor excuse for a "business". Ok I never leave reviews for government offices because let's just face it-it's usually an experience you don't want to remember I mean so bad they should honestly have a bar in these places lol. This place is hands down the best SocialSecurity office in ALL of the Bay Area!! I drive 30miles for it and I'm never disappointed given I've only been here three times-twice in one day because I had a blonde moment and did not bring all documents to apply for a social security number for my newborn babygirl. Drove all the way back to Dublin grabbed documents-they didn't make me wait-helped me instantly ;) super nice and answered all questions!! read more

Went in about 8:45 and the security guard was Already letting people in. Got my number by 9am and only had to wait about 20 minutes or so till I was called up. Very fast and not so time consuming like previous locations. Would recommend going here if you want to be in and out in under an hour. read more

I was at this office two times to make an address change (for someone, yes the person was with me). The 2nd time we waited over an hour. There was no parking I parked the car at a 1-hr parking zone and lucky I didn't get any ticket. The customer service person told us "everything was taken care of" and notices will be sent to the new address. Yet they still send us the notice to the old address and good thing the postal office forwarded it to us. So We have to go there another time to take care of this? It's worse then DMV service that you have to physically go there 3 times to change your address. I guess they get paid whether they do their work right or not? read more

First time and I would definitely go back to this specific office if I needed to. I'm disabled so the easy and plentiful parking was great! Then I was able to take the elevator up to where the SS office is. The guard was pleasant and helpful, the wait was not bad at all considering I hadn't made an appointment; didn't know you could. So I had about a 40 min.wait and the gentleman who helped me was extremely thorough, well informed and efficient and yet took the time to ask me how my day was going!! I left feeling great!! read more
