This is by far one of my favourite parts of the city. With it's impressive Victorian railway bridges built from colossal iron pillars, boat-lined canals, recently renovated buildings and plenty of places to eat and drink, a stroll around the Castlefield Locks area is a must for anyone visiting Manchester.
Canal cruises are available for those who want to view the city's historic waterways from the warmth of a luxurious canal barge or if you're more of a land adventurer, a canal-side walk starting at Castlefield will take you right through the city and provide some excellent photo opportunities, if you're into gritty street scenes, dark tunnels, old buildings etc, like me.
There are a number of good bars and pubs in the Castlefield area. My favourite so far is The Wharf (I've written a separate review about it) which offers great views of the canal, boats and Beetham Tower if you choose to sit outside.
Castlefield has a rural feel to it, which you won't find anywhere else in the city, so if you're in need a break from the hustle and bustle but don't want to venture too far, make your way to this pretty, pleasant corner of Manchester. read more
