Great hike with friends!
Michael T.

A true hidden gem with an epic payoff a short walk from the trailhead! Raise your hand if you knew about this trail before reading this review. If you've got your hand up, pat yourself on the back because this is tucked away in a place only a true local could know about. We tackled this trail with the help of friends from Gear Hut and Sierra Club, who made sure we knew how to safely navigate the terrain and find our way. The parking area by the trailhead is currently under construction, making way for lots of folks in the near future. There are some rudimentary maps hung on construction cones outside the fencing, but they're not totally helpful. The real map of the area is inside the fence on the main board, and it's absolute worth finding before you head off. The hike to castle Rock is short and sweet if you go direct. There's a short scramble at the end that puts you on a nice lookout over the lake between Zephyr Cove and Stateline. Along the way there are some other lookouts that view over the forest between the peaks of the mountains. We spotted falcons fighting mid air and quite a few curious chipmunks along the way. The trail is nicely shaded too! From Castle Rock you can follow the loop for a nice leisurely 3 mile jaunt through the forest. The shade means you can do this trail any time of the day and without much elevation gain, it's great for kids and dogs too. Next time I visit I'm doing the loop in reverse so Castle Rock becomes a much needed rest point. This is a trail I hope to take lots of friends on in the future!

Nice day hike!

Went up on a Sunday afternoon deep in the heart of summer! There was construction going on at the Trail head so I had to park down the street. The trail head leads you to Castle rock, or puts you right on the Tahoe rim Trail. The group I was with went for the castle rock Trail. It's a fairly easy hike, very short and practically flat. Just about anybody can handle it. There are Falcons nesting during their season, so be aware and be respectful of nature. If they get upset, we could lose some! Make sure you bring mosquito repellent! The view from the rock is spectacular! Gorgeous overlook of Lake Tahoe! Well worth the drive, and the hike!

This was amazing!! What a fantastic was to get out and explore our own backyard. This trail is very well groomed and maintained, wasn't hard to navigate the trail as all the signs were well marked, plenty of views, dog friendly, lots of shade, and I loved the end pay off and the beautiful view of Lake Tahoe. 100% will come back and bring my family and friends. This trail head is getting a new parking lot and many options to other longer hikes too if you wish. Already looking forward to my next hike! Directions:* but always check your map for your best route. From South Reno: Take 580 South and merge onto 395 S in Carson City. Take 395 S to NV757/Muller Lane and turn RIGHT. Take NV 757 to NV206 and turn LEFT. Turn RIGHT onto NV207/Kingsbury Grade, and follow until N. Benjamin Rd and turn RIGHT and continue onto Andria Dr. This will dead end into the trailhead. From Stateline, NV: Head up Kingsbury Grade (RT 207) for 2.8 miles. Turn left on N. Benjamin and continue onto Andria Dr and it eventually dead ends into the trailhead

Some of the climbing!

One of my favorite hikes and climbing areas. Has a beautiful view of all of South Lake Tahoe. The climbing is very good for beginners and the hike itself is very easy with only a small amount of steepness near the end. You can also make a great loop hike if you continue North on the Tahoe Rim Trail and use the cutoff trail to get back to the parking lot.

A nice fun hike on a trailhead with ample parking easily marked signs, that takes about 1 hour, is not too difficult for beginners, and ends with a nice view of the Lake. This will be one of the highlights of your visit to Lake Tahoe. Highly recommended.

What a beautiful hike and so easy to get to. Parking is limited to street side parking while they are completing construction of the new parking lot! The castle rock loop trail was a fairly simple hike. Partially shaded with so many astonishing views. I hiked it with my 5 year old son and he did well until about halfway back to the car. I wouldn't recommend being any littles who aren't used to hiking. No restrooms at this time but I believe it will be in the future after the parking lot remodel.

Lam Watah Trail to NV Beach

I just found out about Lam Watah Trail (in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline in the Nevada side) and…read morewalked it recently. The name in Washoe means permanent mortar by the stream. The trailhead is right within walking distance from the casinos and Stateline/Highway 50. If walking the strip/Stateline is not your thing, don't forget about the free Lake Link shuttle service. The trail leads to Nevada Beach. It's 2.8 miles roundtrip. Flat, no inclines. My kind of walk. Portions of the trail are packed dirt or paved with the majority of it paved. The trailhead has a small paved parking lot, it's free with no time limits but no overnight parking allowed. There are public restrooms. If they're open, I suggest using those because in the winter all the other restrooms on the trail and the beach are closed. We discovered that the hard way. There are two options of trails at the trailhead parking lot. You can use the paved path or the dirt path. The dirt path provides a view of Jennings pond and field as it is right next to it. Even though the pond itself is about 4 feet, you or your fur babies don't want to fall into that ice cold water so stay on the path. The field and pond tend to blend together in the winter scenery. The paved path doesn't provide views of the meadow or pond. Both trails link together. At this intersection, there is a foot bridge that crosses the Burke Creek. Even in the middle of winter, the creek had a trickling flow of water. The sound was relaxing and serene. The path from this point on is paved. Right now, sections of the path have ice and snow even on a warm sunny winter day. So be prepared with the right footgear. Along the way, there are info boards describing the history. I found out that the indigenous Washoe lived in the area before European settlers, and Rabe meadow served as the Sky Harbor casino and air landing strip in the 1940s. Crazy to think there was a casino and air strip here. On the opposite side of the meadow are large, beautiful granite boulder clusters viewable from the path. And Aspen grooves which I imagine are flaming gorgeous in the Fall. The trail leads to the beach. The beach has a walking path made of a composite grooved decking about 3-4 feet wide. The beach can also be reached by driving to it; it has a paved parking lot and street parking. On the weekday I walked the trail, it had a good number of folks and dogs. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail but not allowed on the beach.

As a non-Nevada resident, the cost to launch and park is $25 a day. If you're a NV resident, it's $20. To avoid the crowds and to ensure we have parking, my party arrives before the 6am opening time. Surprisingly, we are hardly ever the first ones in line. When it's our turn, the guy removes the seal (it's a wire that indicates that the boat has been inspected) and records a few notes. Usually, I pay for the $25 in cash, but you can use the kiosk which takes credit card, but it's not user friendly. With two launch lines, the place is initially busy, but calms down 9am -10am. After pulling out of the water, the guy re-seals the boat. There are bathrooms available as well as PFDs if you forgot yours.

On the afternoon that we arrived, we were lucky that the parking kiosk was not working and the gate to enter was open, so we lucked out with free parking. But will mention that this most likely was during off season because it was pretty cold on the day of our visit (we were one of very few crazy people willing to kayak in the water on this cold day (low to mid 60's). After we parked, my husband and I pulled our foldable kayaks over to the sand. After putting our kayaks together, we launched ourselves from the sand and then were off. Initially the water nice and calm but about 30 minutes into it, the waves started to get choppy and the winds were blowing kind of hard, so we only managed to kayak for about an hour but it was a fun visit. The view from my kayak was very beautiful and serene (before the winds starting to blow harder). Please note that near this beach is dog friendly, Zephyr Shoals Beach north of Zephyr Cove Resort. But where we parked and launched our kayaks is not dog friendly. There is food sold from the concession stands and there are restrooms on this beach (but I did not use any of the restrooms, nor did I purchase any food). Also kayaks are available for rent here. Overall, we had a good visit and would consider coming back here to kayak again the next time we visit Lake Tahoe.
