This small motel and complex of cabins sits just off the main road with access to the lake behind it. From the moment we arrived, we admired its vintage charm & greatly appreciated how EXTREMELY CLEAN our motel room was. Freshly painted, new rustic bedding, knotty pine floors, and blackout curtains make it a cozy place to stay. There is a flat screen TV, mini fridge / freezer, microwave and Free Wifi available in the motel rooms. You can tell that the owner takes great pride in caring for the property. Out front of your motel room, is a picnic bench, gas grill, fire pit and chairs for your use. You can stroll down to the lake, swim, jump off the dock or borrow one of the canoes available. Our family of 2 adults, 2 young children and 2 dogs fit very comfortably in the room provided. Acadia is about 35 minutes away. At $85/nite we were happy to make a little drive to get to our destination.

Judy and Ed, the owners, held the door open for us as we approached the entrance. The lobby had beautiful chandeliers and fall decor. We pleasantly chatted about how similar MN and ME are with them as we checked in. We received a pair of actual keys to our room, which was a refreshing escape from electronic this and selfie that. Since we were only in town for a night, we stayed in a double-queen room instead of a full suite. We had our own separate entrance to the room from our own private patio area, which made it feel like we were entering a vacation home. Every detail in the room was luxurious. From the Bose stereo playing jazz, to the fireplace, to the ornate furniture, to THE most comfortable bed and pillows, to the hardwood hallway leading to the large bathroom with light dimmers. In the morning, they set-up a wonderful breakfast in-room for us: spinach-feta frittata, spring salad, fruit salad, blueberry-lemon pound cake, OJ, and coffee. Having to check out and leave really sucked. Additional info: Must book weeks in advance, as they only have 8 rooms. Park in the front to check-in, then you can re-park in the private lot in the back. They are right next to the Co-op and within walking distance of basically everything in town!

It's also where we had breakfast the following morning. It was the highlight of the trip. The reception was held in a different building that was also very nice, but didn't have the same views. It didn't matter much - the sun sets early these days so there was nothing to see. The cocktail hour featured pass horderves including a lobster shooter and steak with blue cheese dipping sauce. No complaints here. The salad and bread were nothing special, but I had the salmon for dinner and it's one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had. I highly recommend it. The cake was pretty good too. We had our choice of three types, and of course, I tried all three. Chocolate was my favorite. (lemon was my least favorite, with chocolate mousse being second). Overall, the food was good. Another positive was the bowling alley. If you go with a group (eg Wedding party) you can reserve all 8 lanes. We had fun for 3 hours. It included music, finger food and a cash bar. I also enjoyed the hiking trails, though I have one gripe - they should be rated (beginner, intermediate, etc.) We hiked a trail to the lake and my blind, 80-year old uncle had a tough time. This trails had hills, rocks, roots and deep puddles. I would consider this intermediate. At least one other trail looked like a x-country ski trail (just grass) and was much easier (it would be a beginner trail!) Overall, the staff were polite and friendly. During our 3 day stay, we encountered only one rude person, and she was the check-in person (in other words, the first person we met). I forget her name, but long story short we wanted to know if we should grab ice from the machine or whether there was some in the cabin and she rudely replied "Well, how should I know what's in the cabin!" Um, OK crabby lady... but she was the exception, thankfully. Actually, a highlight regarding service was when my cousins locked themselves out of their cabin and a staffer from the reception went to get them a new key so they wouldn't have to leave! Excellent job! As far as the cabins go, they are nicely appointed and plenty warm (We went on a chilly November weekend). Our only complaints were a lack of seating in the living room (could have used a sofa or another chair when entertaining) and the very hard mattresses. Also, the beds are queens, so understand that. My parents ended up ordering a cot because the bed was too small (no big deal, only $20 a night). Also, the housekeeping does not really clean the cabin. They don't do dishes or make the bed during your stay. They will drop off TP and fresh towels. This didn't bother me much, but it was a surprise. One last note on the cabins - the last sign for cabins 40-106 is insufficient in the dark. The sign says take a left by the Athena U building, but really, it's a hard left up a hill (almost a U-turn) and it's easy to miss. You could end up down an alley by a dumpster which several of us did. Lastly, I will say that though I enjoyed my time here, for better or worse, it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. (some people might enjoy this). I lovingly referred to Northport as East Bumf***, Maine. It's about 4hrs from Boston with traffic. For some reason, my cell service didn't work, though others with AT&T had fine service all weekend. Northport doesn't have much going on, nor does Lincolnville (I did visit the one pub, Whale's Tooth, and it is very dated and caters mostly to locals in the off-season). Camden is 15 min away and does offer plenty of restaurants and shops. We went here several times. Overall, it was a lovely wedding and fun to see my relatives. Not sure I'll ever be back but some recommendations nonetheless: Think about adding a little store where people can buy essentials and maybe a six-pack of beer; perhaps add a pub; I heard the frisbee disc golf course is non-existent and this could be fun; throw in a mini-golf course while your add it - really anything to make it feel like an all-inclusive resort so you don't really have to leave if you don't want to.

The biggest surprise of all was that the fireplace comes with firewood! You can also use one of their rowboats or kayak for free during your stay. The cabin I rented was perfect for me and a very large dog; we sat on the deck and watched the boats come and go. Was able to walk my dog just fine. Will def be back

Highlights: the kitchen is fully (and may I add perfectly) stocked to actually cook dinner in - lobster pots and crackers, pots, pans, knives, everything. They even provide the dish soap and paper towels...something we never get when we travel in the south. There is a washer dryer (again, there is soap) in the basement. Next, there are tons of books, DVDs, an XBox and even toys/books for little ones! Since we were flying this was key. There is also a crib, high chair and stroller. Other rentals up here don't offer that! The deck is great - lots of seating and a nice view of the harbor. They have some adirondack chairs down by the shore and a fire pit. You can walk to the marina (buy lobster from a lobsterman!) or into town in just a few minutes. Oh and there is AC...again many places up here don't have it and you never know if it will be 95 or 75 up here in summer...we've had both! It's about 25- minutes to get into Acadia National Park, which may seem far. But the town of Southwest Harbor is so quaint I'm glad we stayed here.

Les greeted us and took the time to show us to our room on the third floor telling us all about the history of the property on the way. Someone complained in another review that there are stairs up to the third floor. It is true. They are wooden, steep, and full of character. The floors are original and slope and creak as expected, but are beautifully painted and well kept. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom was perfect, looking like it was remodeled yesterday. Since we realized there was not going to be a lot of dining choices, we stopped at a grocery on our way in for a light picnic dinner of cheese, crackers, fruit and a bottle of wine to enjoy by the water. It was a perfect evening to watch the sunset on one of the two waterfront areas on the property. It was only my husband and me. We could see another couple sitting on the rocks, but it still felt so private and it truly felt like something out of a romantic movie. The next morning we enjoyed the best blueberry muffins provided by the host and coffee on the front porch of the inn. As we sat looking down toward the water both a deer and a red fox came through the yard as a humming flew around the beautiful flowers. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. I almost want to keep this gem a secret!
