It's also near 2 well known locations, Melody Ranch and Masters College. I recommend downloading the city of Santa Clarita trail map so you can keep track of your location on the trails as you hike. This trail is really good for kids and it's great if you're interested in a good workout. The kids will appreciate the horses at the start of the trail and the easy path of Coyote and Fox's loop. For a workout try the steep incline section of the coyote loop then make your way to the lookout point. I doubt that you'll find a trail with a steeper incline in Santa Clarita. The trail is sun exposed with some shady areas. There are some nice benches and a cool bridge made from power lines on the west section of coyote loop.

Just an FYI, if you go in through the main entrance and decide to take the path around to another exit be warned that there are some pretty steep hills to go down near the end. And I did see a mattress and a used condom lying a round by one of the exits of the trail but hey.. sometimes the moment just can't wait right?? The answer is yes... it can wait... don't have sex on a dirty, disgusting mattress next to a hiking trail. That's weird and gross. This was cleaned up within weeks btw.. Also.. watch out mountain bikers!! They come down the hill at a very high rate of speed and might not be able to avoid you in time if you are walking/running around a corner. If you are a walker while texting just be sure to stay alert! There is also a good sized staircase a few hundred yards inside the entrance which is nice to use for workouts as well. Also watch out for snakes, they are common here. This place is quiet on weekdays but a bit busier on weekends. It's peaceful and I love coming here to Meditate a few times a week. I like it. It's a hike trail, how could it get anything but a 5 star??

Plum Canyon may have been named in reference to the many Holly-leaved Cherry plants in the bottom of the canyon (Prunus ilicifolia) whose fruit was ripe and edible on my hike. Parking is free (I parked on the east end of the road). Bring water, sunscreen and a camera/phone. The hike itself was moderately strenuous, with some uphill climbs, but nothing too steep. Look out for mountain bikers speeding downhill and enjoy.

You will just have to figure out the best way to navigate through the barriers. The other option is crossing the street where Whites Canyon meets Plum Canyon near the new Fire Station. The most interesting thing about Plum Canyon Fire Road is the numerous stacked stone piles that seem to be everywhere. I recently learned that they are called cairns. They can be used as memorials or a landmarks. In this case I think people just made them to have some fun. If your goal is to reach Cruzan Mesa, AKA Mystery Mesa, then be sure to make a left when you come to a junction. If you start to head downhill on Plum Canyon Fire Rd then you've gone too far. Make your way up the nearest hill and walk along the ridgeline until you see it. The entire property is enclosed by a fence.

However, This one may cause me to reconsider such low expectations... Due to lack of time..I'll have to plan another day to come back and go further... However we still managed to explore 5miles...But this is the type of trail that makes you want to keep going. And from the looks if it, you could keep going for days. Keep in mind that this is the hike that is past mentryville, they have a $5 parking fee, bring cash. So the first part if the hike is a paved road (which makes jogging a really nice option) there are two places where you have the option to take a left which would lead to picnic tables... However if you keep going straight you will get a nice photo op. Of the Pico Canyon plaques where the first oil well once was. Right past this you can begin your climb up the mountain. The incline is perfect... It offed a great workout opportunity... And it's not too hard where it makes you feel like you may die if you continue. The view is surprisingly gorgeous.. Seriously, I have lived out in Santa Clarita my entire life and I never would have guessed such views existed. It is a hike that you should not attempt on your own, only because it's pretty secluded, my partner and I did not see another single hiker. I definitely look forward to coming back, the path seems endless and I would love to continue on... It also helps that the weather was in our favor today... Couldn't have asked for a better day. The trail starts at Mentryville, an interesting old and historically significant town that has been used for a number of movies. Further up the road you'll encounter a mini trail on the left. It's a great trail for kids. It has some small bridges and ends with a picnic bench on a hill. Continuing up the paved road you will encounter a neat little area on the left that has some old oil field relicts. Further up the road on the right you will encounter Well #4, the first commercial oil well in California. The paved road will eventually end and then you will start the trek up the mountain. Even though there is a fairly wide path, when you start to get high up the mountain the height can be a little intimidating. The views at the top of the mountain are probably the best in Santa Clarita.

It's a beautiful trail through a grove of native Valley Oak, California Black Walnut and willow trees. Absolutely gorgeous and not too strenuous, there a few creek crossings along the way. You'll see some oil seeps on the way, a reminder that there is oil drilling nearby. Birds, butterflies and flowers make this an enjoyable hike. Parking: Free parking on the street. Or pay $5 in the day use lot. Hours: Sunrise to sunset. Watch out: Lots of poison oak and mountain bikers. Stay safe....bring lots of water and sunscreen, possibly bug spray as well. Admission is free.

Be careful, I also saw a rattlesnake in our path and we had to wait for it to pass so there are definitely snakes in the area. Other than all that if you decide to come it's still a beautiful spot. When we arrived at the parking lot it was empty around 100pm then it was busy when we arrived back from our ride. The route was nice and easy with some great views.

This is very close to Magic Mountain in Valencia. The scene where they all take Michael to the bridge and all jump off the side. When Michael looks over the edge, he sees they are all hanging. Michael joins them hanging under the bridge and they all hang as the train goes by above the bridge and shakes them all loose and they fall. Michael eventually falls and lands in his bed. First time he realizes he is now a vampire! Great scene, great movie. This are is great for hiking, biking and just connecting with nature in general. Although the bridge today does not have trains rolling over it, only bikes and walkers. Not sure it ever did at least when the movie was made. But that is what makes movies great! Enjoy!

It's always a fun drive down Sierra Hwy between the hills towards Newhall, but if you've got the…read moretime, turn into Needham Ranch Pkwy. This entire portion has been transformed over the years into the Gate-King Industrial Park. Tucked within these new building are trails for hikers and bikers to explore with benches along the way and even a Little Free Library set up. From Pine St, walk alongside the Amazon warehouse on a paved path which will lead down a switchback. Pine St continues down this path, and on this particular day we went off toward Railroad Mtwy in which we crisscrossed past the railroad tunnel and up the mountain range. Most of the trail is shaded with plenty of trees, most of which are easy with a few exceptions of steep inclines. In the late afternoons, the peak provides a wide view of the horizon to watch the sunset. If you're lucky to line up with the schedule of the train passing by, you can walk directly above the tunnel. Watch your step and go slow. A thrilling experience waiting with bated breath and hearing the rumbling sounds echo louder as the train approaches.

The trail was well maintained except for certain areas where motorized vehicles (motorcycles) have caused damage to the trail and where some of the trail was impacted by heavy water flow. There weren't any areas that were impassable.
