Soon I picked up my order from the counter. First of all, I had to double check my receipt to make sure my French had been good enough to let the lady taking my order that I wanted a small order of frites. I'd need help with anything larger than that! (There is also a baby option, which a sensible me would have ordered.) The Michigan was a steamee with a sweet meat sauce, and brought back a lot of pleasant childhood memories. The frites were perfect, not too salty, not greasy. The root beer was...from a can. Prices were very reasonable. Certainly no more expensive than a corporate fast food place, and with much higher quality meals. The place has a wood theme going on. Better than a place with a plastic theme going on. It was also very clean. The lady taking ordes was also frequently coming out from behind the counter with a spray bottle and cloth to clean tables. Was this fine dining? Of course not! Was it elevated fast food? YES! I would come back, just not too often, because I no longer have a young person's metabolism.

The star was the buffalo chicken poutine, which can only be found in Quebec. The portion was huge and the gravy and toppings were plentiful. I also tried the habanero chicken sandwich, the veggie burger, and the blueberry cheesecake pie. The poutine is by far the best item. The chicken sandwich was just okay. The veggie burger was pretty dry and unimpressive. We loved the blueberry cheesecake pie! Service was good and the restaurant was clean. It's definitely worth a visit when you need something quick and easy.

I was curious about the classic poutine but when I saw the Mexican poutine on the menu, I knew I had to try it. It was so incredibly delicious! Our waiter was a sweetheart. All four of us absolutely loved our meals that night. What an awesome way to start our weekend getaway in Quebec!!

We tried the India which was a butter chicken sauce with chicken and mushrooms. It was a fun dish with good flavor gravy. Odd choice to me to put mushrooms in it since I've never had butter chicken with mushrooms. The Chicken was thin sliced, I was expecting more like chunks. Regardless this was a solid 4 in my book. We also tried the Hat Trick which is basically a three meat poutine with bacon, ground beef and hot dogs. This was also solid, not as unique, but good. Probably a 3.75. we ordered the mega sized for both, which made the 2 dishes enough food for 3-4 people depending how hungry you are. We wanted the leftovers. The down side to this experience was the service. The place was nearly empty. The server passed us with a pitcher of water in have and didn't even fill the glasses. When we ordered a diet Pepsi instead of getting a fountain drink we got it in a can (both options were in the menu, fountain was cheaper), why not ask us if not sure what we want? At the end we waited a while to see the server and instead just ended up asking the hostess for our to-go containers. Nothing horrible, just meh. The takeaway, pretty good poutine with not so hot service.

Have these people never had a burger before? There's nothing wrong with the burgers here, but there's also nothing right about them. They're burgers. Meat, bread, lettuce, sauces..yep. It's a burger. And it's okay. Bland and by-the-book to a fault. It tasted liked they perfected the art of having minimal flavors and ingredients, as if they were weighing the taste of each in a highly technical way. I forgot I even went here by the next day and was only reminded by pictures I took. It's basically the Quebecois version of whatever one step up from an Applebee's would be, but with a premium price tag and hype. Any other burger in town would probably be just as good if not better. Side was pretty bad. Basically burnt tofu. Service was lacking, but there. I was tended to in the most basic 'there's another table to get through' way possible. Check took a long time to get to me and I ended up just walking up to the counter. Not sure why. There weren't a lot of people there. The lobster roll was nothing out of the ordinary (we've had maine lobster rolls given we live in the northeast of USA), we enjoyed the hotdog slightly more - it was nicely topped with other stuff, adding to the meaty flavor of the hotdog!

Saint-Louis-de-France is the neighbourhood I grew up in, and this particular Ashton location has not changed since 1997. Hence the nostalgia. I have actually never eaten anything but poutine at Ashton. It's not a fancy place, so the only toppings available are hot-dog, Dulton (grounded meat), extra cheese/sauce and whatnot. I suppose that if I was more objective, I would say fries are average and taste a bit oily (they recently started using smaller ones to get more crisp, but I'm not sure I agree on the decision). The cheese is proper (squeaky = fresh). The gravy is great, but many non-locals are not used to how thin it is. In fact, it should probably be called "sauce" (it's meant to soak the fries). So, Ashton is basically the most endearing comfort food for locals, and just generic fast-food for many outsiders. I call it my own favorite, but it also made my quest for poutine very difficult in Montreal... Tip: In winter, there's rebate if temperature fall lower than -20'C. So -34'C means 30% rebate.
