As we travel on the journey of life our path is sometimes changed by unexpected events or…read moresituations. This is what happened to me on this fateful March day in 2022. The skies were overcast, and the wind was wiping with rage as I was traveling to the Ohio Illinois filling station for a quick bite to eat. I pulled into the parking lot and sat in my truck contemplating if the risk of eating there outweighed the reward. I am normally not a man that gambles but in a moment of weakness I decided to go for it against my better judgment. As I walked in, it was to my surprise that the card reader was once again not working. So, I walked over the ATM to grab some cash to pay for my soon to be bout of diarrhea that was inevitably in my near future. I am not sure if it was a lucky break or if God intervened on my behalf, but the ATM was "Out of Order". I turned around defeated and walked out the door with my stomach still yarning for food. After a quick search on the next nearest establishment on my cell phone I decided I would drive to the next town over which was Walnut, Illinois. I knew I was getting close when small towns water tower peaked over the horizon. The closer I got to Walnut I could see a silhouette of a World War II era battle tank which was the towns gatekeeper. As I approached the tank, I could see that the sides were scaled with rust as If it was the remnants of a time long gone. The town of Walnut appeared to be just like any typical small Midwest town with agriculture deep engrained in their way of life. As if a beacon of light lite up my path I could see the tall shell gas station sign before me. The soul purpose of this trip miles out of my way. I was ecstatic when I saw that this gas station was twice the size of the Ohio Filling station, Afterall it had two pumps instead of one and they both appeared to be in working order. I walked in the door, it was almost like the record skipped and the regular clientele became keenly aware of my presence. I was an out-sider after all and an unfamiliar face. As I made my way around the store, eyes glaring at me and as if they were anticipating my next move. I found myself standing in front of a fridge door with an impressive selection of soft drinks and cheese sticks. I viewed my options and landed on a ZERO ULTRA Monster energy drink. I grabbed my desired drink and made my way to the area with the food, which was in a glass case on the right side of the cash register. This part of the gas station felt like a small family owed diner. With the walls covered in retro wood panels, two outdated burnt orange booths, and boxes of plastic straws along the walls. In the glass case it was your typical gas station food; However, there was no access to the food and required ordering your food from the tenant behind the counter. After careful consideration I decided on deep fried mac and cheese bites. After receiving my delicious small-town cuisine, I made my way to the cash register to pay for my items. Once there I was greeted by a blonde lady with the name "Patti" on her badge. She was kind woman who appeared to love the slow pace and freedom her lifestyle provided. This was an overall great visit with great customer service. I am just glad I didn't have to eat at the nasty Ohio Filling Station.
