We we had an evening meal here after going on a Puebla food tour in the afternoon. I only mention that because we were pretty full before we even sat down to eat. Things we liked: the sommelier was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He let me taste two different wines and I get to choose my favorite. He even helped us get a ride home. The food was generally quite good. We ordered four different items, including a beef ceviche, fried parsley, crema Poblana soup and mole poblano with chicken. My favorite of these was the crema poblano soup. All items were all nicely prepared. The servings were quite generous. Despite several complaints we read on Yelp about the prices, we thought they were pretty reasonable compared to what we would pay in the USA. Things we didn't like: there was some construction going on, apparently to prepare for Valentine's Day. There were some poorly behaved children running through the restaurant. There were large groups of waiters standing around talking to each other. The restaurant wasn't very crowded on this Wednesday night. I was told that this is one of the highly ranked restaurants in the city among others. We were sitting within the courtyard under the tree, and slowly began to notice that little black bugs were falling from the tree on our plate, and our food and our water and drinks. When we brought this to the attention of the staff, it almost seemed as if we were a bother, aside from that moment, my salmon was delicious to this day. Where to begin..... from the minute we arrived, you could tell the service was going to be impeccable. And I was not wrong. We were in town visiting some family and was recommended this place for their CHILES EN NOGADA since they are in season in Puebla, Mexico. They accommodated 6 adults and my little baby boy in a stroller without any fuss. Then we were offered wine by, in my experience, the best sommelier named Alejandro or Alex. He brought us a delicious red wine that paired very well with the Chile en nogada. For those who haven't had it, let me tell you, it's the best dish to try for this season. It's a poblano pepper stuffed with all sorts of fruit (pear, apple, raisins, to name a few) and ground meat. It's topped off with a walnut sauce and pomegranate on top for added flavor and texture. Sounds a bit weird but your taste buds would love you. The whole table had chiles en nogada and the most cutest thing they do, is they give you a certificate that comes with the chile en nogada and a number so you know how many plates of these they have served this season and which number you were. I was number 43,081. Once done with the main dish, I of course had to have dessert. I ordered a 3 chocolate mouse cake, which was devine, and for the rest of table, they had a sampler dessert where they had everything from rice pudding to strawberry ice cream. Since we were winding down, my boyfriend ordered a rosé champagne. Alex, The sommelier, recommended to have a taste of the strawberry ice cream and then the champagne together in your mouth, and let me just say, this was the best thing ever! After that I had a coffee drink (forgot the name of it) that tasted as if I was sipping on an iced coffee, only this one was spiked . Mole and pipián with salmon was riquísimo! Mixiote was delicious. It was prepared on natural mixiote leave, included avocado leaves as well and nopalitos with a delicious Mexican adobo. Nevertheless, the meat was not lamb, as advertised on the menu, it was beef. Despite of that, I recommend it. We had additional dishes, but these two rocked the meal. Dinning area was beautiful. Sanitation and social distancing was on point and our server was very attentive. What a wonderful stay in Puebla!! My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. I reserved 2 rooms (party of 4- two couples) and we arrived a little earlier than check-in (closer to 12:00) but they were able to accommodate our early check-in without any problems. Overall the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel overall is beautiful with a lovely, open courtyard. There are stores selling beautiful pottery, artwork, and purses. They also have a spa offering massages and other services, though we did not experience these services. My room was a nice size with a comfortable king-size bed. I slept like a baby. There was a mini-fridge (had stuff inside but you can easily move things around to fit your own items). There was also a closet with robes and a safe. The bathroom was large and clean. They provided shampoo, soap, lotion, etc. We had breakfast at the restaurant. Our room came with complimentary continental breakfast (juice, fruits, pastry). However, we decided to eat a-la-carte. I had a delicious omelette. My husband ordered a chilaquiles dish off of the special of the day menu (also very tasty). Service was friendly. Honestly my only regret is that I didn't order a mole dish, like the breakfast crepes- I heave heard that the mole here is the best in the area. The location was perfect- within short walking distance of a mall, beautiful garden, and market. It was also very close to some of the major sites. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. We thought we may need a late check-out and they were willing to let us check out around 14:00 without an extra fee (though we ended up not needing late check-out). My husband and I will definitely be visiting Puebla again, and when we do, we will return to Casa Reyna!! read more

Love CasaReyna. What a gorgeous hotel, extremely affordable, and just a couple of blocks outside of the historical city center. Our room was massive with two separate bedrooms, only separated by walls not doors, large beautiful bathroom with both shower and soaking tub. High ceilings, stone walls, such a pretty hotel + room. We would move-in if we could! We had dinner at the restaurant one night, it was mediocre. However, we're vegetarian so maybe those options aren't the best. We've already recommended CasaReyna and hope to return some day. read more

I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. Airy, minimalist design was especially nice during Covid. The other day, I tried a different restaurant that was supposedly a mole specialist and had great reviews--and I was pretty disappointed. I decided to try this one. First off, the poblano Chile relleno was absolutely delicious. The tacos poblano were simple but very good, as well. The poblano Chile cream soup was spectacular. Slightly spicy but the cream lessened the heat, and I liked that. And it contained corn. The mole sampler was far, far superior to the one I had at the other very popular mole restaurant with tons of positive reviews. And Casareyna had a very extensive wine list. I came here with high hopes because of a high recommendation from a local, but I found the service to be lacking and the food to be mediocre. I wanted to try mole poblano and they pushed me towards the mole sampler plate. I found the meat served with the mole poblano inedible as it was overcooked and dry. Not even the mole sauce slathered on top could save it. I observed the attentive service at another table while the service at my table less attentive. The mole poblano was served on a cracked a plate including a sloppy presentation of food with the rice being way too dry for me to eat. The lemonade was lukewarm and watered down. The best thing about this restaurant during my visit was the strawberry margarita. For the price I paid for my meal at this fine dining restaurant at this boutique hotel, it was not worth it. I should have visited a more low-key fonda for the mole poblano instead of this lousy dining experience. read more

I was thrilled with this hotel! This place is a true experience. The hotel was designed by the famous Mexican architect, Ricardo Legorreta, who also designed the San Antonio Public Library, another hotel in Puebla, and the MARCO Museum in Monterrey, Mexico. The design has bold colors, simple geometric designs, long straight lines with sharp angles, and little alcoves that aren't meant for walking through. The staff was amazing- they spoke perfect English, catered to my every whim, served up fresh hibiscus tea in the lobby. They also offered cool things to read, and a pottery shop in the lobby area. The restaurant on site was top notch, serving excellent Mexican food, and complimentary continental breakfasts consisting of sweet bread, jams, juice, and fruit. Delicious! For some reason, this hotel is branded by the car company, Audi. They park a mucho expensive Audi car in the middle of the lobby, a V10 when I was there. Swanky! The hotel is designed around a dilapidated convent, or some other old structure, where they left the old parts of the building, and updated it with new design and walls. There's a pool on the roof of the place, a little lap pool, with the infinity design, and a good sized hot tub. There's also a spa that offers massages for reasonable prices. On the roof, is a running track that was one of the oddest running tracks I'd seen- it has the fancy sproingy running material that's good for your knees, but it's so small, that you go for about 50', then take a right angle turn, then go for about 30' before taking another right angle turn, and repeating. You can't go far without stopping and taking a hard turn, which isn't so good for running. The room was simple, but luxurious- with a huge bed, a giant shower, and a bathroom as large as my bedroom back home. The hotel isn't exactly in the town center. It's about a six block walk from the Zocalo, but a nice walk nonetheless. Across the street is the Garden of San Francisco, which is a lovely garden with plenty of stuff to check out. Also across the street is a fancy shopping mall. When I was there, the hotel was throwing an 80th birthday party for a local lady, which brought out mariachi musicians, and a bunch of other old ladies, which was a nice touch. Checking out this hotel for the restaurant alone is worth it, but you gotta stick around for the design. read more

Delicious but simple complimentary breakfast as a guest of the hotel: fruit, granola, bread, homemade and unique Jams and butter! We also ordered enmoladas which had lots of mole poblano which was rich and delicious! We decided to have dinner here as well since it was raining and reviews and menu looked great! The food was delicious as well! We had sopa azteca, ceviche with mango, and duo de pipian. Good! No complaints. The problems came with service and functioning of the staff, in my opinion. The waiter was nice enough BUT he did not bother to clarify or understand (and I'm fluent in Spanish) that when my dad had ordered a soup I did NOT want my main dish to come with his soup. Well, sure enough...my main dish came when his soup was served, the very thing I had tried to explain I did not want. Well, mentioning this to the waiter causes no reaction to please, take the food back, or ask how he. Oils make it ok. Anywho...bigger problem was that there was a party of 6 girls and (3 moms???) who were running and screaming in the restaurant multiple times, without ANYONE DOING ANYTHING EFFECTIVELY to shut them up or calm them down! It was very uncomfortable!!! I couldn't WAIT TO LEAVE THE CHAOS of what should and looks like a calm, classy, classical music playing place!!! Lastly, I think the waiter saw my changed demeanor but didn't bother to ask if I wanted another drink but made sure to push dessert!?! Makes no sense! We're in Puebla for 5 nights (night 2).Our concierge recommended CasaRenya and hit the bullseye. SO GOOD. So good as a matter of fact that we called over the hostess to book a table for tomorrow night at a table we want to sit at. Would not be surprised if we eat here another time too. This is a beautiful hotel. Tucked just far away enough from the town square, it is quiet and relaxing. The staff have been helpful, as our AC wasn't working quite right and the floor was dirty in our room- we told the front desk and things were handled promptly. I was super excited about staying at Casa Renya because of all the awesome reviews but I was surely mistaken. Check in- Upon later arrival around 9pm the young lady at the desk was pleasant spoke great English and the check in process was speedy. Location- Was awful for us, his family was more than one hour away, which is obviously our fault and not theirs'. But finding the hotel was a nightmare, where we had to drive through the hood of Puebla and scared that we were going to get mugged. But once you get to the hotels street it is a lot safer looking with a mini plaza across the street which was nice. Room- Was the best you can get in Puebla. Clean, roomy and bright, with stunning bathroom. One thing that creeped me out the most was the large gap underneath the door {which I made my fiancé put a blanket under the door to prevent creepy crawlers} && the fact that there wasn't a screen on the windows! But I think this is just a third worldd type of thing that I will never get used to. There was also awful construction going on right underneath our room that began EVERYDAY we were there at 7am that woke us every morning. I don't think I have EVER made a noise complaint before, but it was a violent banging sound that we couldn't tolerate even being in the room for long. What kind of vacation is that? We never complained to the hotel staff, because we barely stayed at the hotel {thank god}! Restaurant- The following morning we woke up ecstatic to get to the restaurant downstairs for our free breakfast. We were pointed in the direction of the cafe by unfriendly faces at the front desk. Stood in the middle of tables trying to get someone's attention to find out how to be seated. After waving someone down who did NOT want to bothered with us. We were seated in a dark corner and given a menu with prices. After 15 minutes of waiting for a server, we asked about the "free breakfast" for hotel guests he explained at it only included a juice, hot cakes and fruit ; anything else would be extra. Not the complimentary breakfast I am used to but uhhhh ok? We then 30 minutes when we noticed everyone around us even the once seated after us were being served. I must add, everyone there was a rich local who dressed as such, maybe because I was in heels and walked around like a snob I was treated like a homeless person begging for service. But we did not complain and figured maybe it was just a busy morning. We finally got our HOT orange juice, what seemed like sliced corn bread {thier "hot cakes"} cold coffe and sliced fruit (children's' portions). But again we did not complain. The second chance we gave the restaurant was even worse! I figured we HADD to have dinner there at least once before we left because everyone raved about their food, boy were we in for a treat. We had brought my fiancés family who are all Mexican locals, and again stood in the middle of the hotel trying to wave someone down to sit my party of 6. A server brushed us off and left 6 PEOPLE standing in the middle of the restaurant with no direction or where to stand, sit or how long the wait was. Embarrassing my fiancé and I after wanting to take his family out to a "great restaurant". 25 minutes goes by and my infuriated fiancé asked to speak with a manager about our not ONCE but TWICEE awful experience. The managers who's name I did not get but was helpful and we were quickly seated, {in a table which had been sitting unoccupied for quite some time} and he himself took our order. We then were assigned possibly the worst waiter I have ever encountered, I wish I got his name because he does not deserve to work there. {His name began with a G} He seemed almost angry and annoyed that he has to help us. Looking at his phone and texting in order to not even look at us while taking our order. He also forced us to leave 10% tip and even stopped us on the way out to get his money. Sick man, you probably need it more than us anyway and we left him EXACTLLY 10% the bare minimum you awful human being. I truly have NEVER felt this discriminated against, I want to clarify I am a light skinned Spanish American, with a Mexican native fiancé. I could probably go on about how awful my experience was but visiting family and experiencing how awesome Mexico was made up for it my horrible experiences here. I live in Puebla, and fail to see what the fuss is about. The food is good, but not really great. The space is ample, but somehow uninviting. The service was profesional, but very rushed. Although it was hardly full the night we went, we felt like they were trying to hustle us through. And the food does not really match the price. One can do better nearby for less money. Wonderful hotel with a great complementary breakfast each morning. Rooms were always clean, wi-fi was powerful, and the overall aestheics were lovely. It was also nice to be slightly out of the city center but a short walk from the action. This translates to larger rooms and a more relaxed atmosphere near a cinema/shopping mall. We stayed in June 2015 for a few days, and it was the best stretch of our multi-week trip, hotel-wise. We got stuck in a hotel in Cholula without a way back to the DF (the three of us had too much luggage to take the bus), and we actually ended up getting a ride from the hotel in Cholula back to Casareyna, where they were willing to arrange a ride back to our hotel in the DF. I still payed full price. The gal who did my service was nice and did an ok job , I'm not sure her training was up to par, ( I feel not her fault) I think she hadn't done many. I still tipped her 20% by American standards. So I was disappointed but hey ho. Shrugging my shoulders & scratching my head. What r u gonna do? Considering this was number 1 on Trip advisor for eating in Puebla, we were very excited. However, we had a very underwhelming experience and were super disappointed. We basically ate and left and would not recommend it at all. We had only just arrived and were accomodating our coats and bags and the server was already asking us for our drink order. My friend requested wine and was only given the option of red. When she asked if there were different kinds of red he looked at her blankly. Once we ordered the food it came out so fast that we hadn't even had a chance to settle in. We had ordered salad or appetizer and a main and they all came out at once. We ordered the mole sampler plate which was a nice presentation but all the sauces were very lukewarm.
