This was a wonderful comic book store established in a basement setting, with wooden frame shelves filled with lots of comic books. The variety span across all different realms and universes, Marvel, DC obviously and some other less known ones. They also had sets of comic books, big posters, Pokemon cards. All the items had a decent price, the sets were little high price, since they were combination of a bunch. We bought a kids story book for our daughter, it was about Loki. The gentleman at the register was super friendly. The POS machine wasn't working, so we paid cash. Overall it a nice store to visit for comic fans. read more

We were wondering at Portland downtown and stumbling upon this hidden gem. Casablanca was located at the basement level. Some DC and Marvel's posters by the entrance. I already knew it was gonna be a good place. Kids section at the front. My 5yo picked out "Loki Loki where are you?" She loves it!! Many collectible items and comics through out the store. Posters wrapped and boarded nicely for carrying out. I would say the price is fair for the collectible. Loki book was maybe $7? The guy at the counter was very nice. I didn't ask any questions but I saw him directing a young lady to a specific section. Overall it's really nice and relaxing in the store. Spacious and quiet. read more

He overheard us talking about something and brought it out to show us our options and kept coming back to show us more. Then when it comes to prices he's extremely generous and will just throw low numbers for you to have the comics. We thought our stacks of comics were going to be expensive but it wasn't at all and it was all due to the kindness of the owner. I'm sure he does this to everyone too. We flew into Portland earlier today and decided to spend a couple of hours walking around before we headed to Bar Harbor. It was pouring and gross outside, so we popped into the comic store to kill some time and dry off. The older couple at the register were some of the most genuine, kind people we've met so far in our trip. The woman knew exactly what comics my fiancé was looking for, and was able to provide both of us (even me, who admittedly isn't into comics) recommendations with a guarantee to me if I didn't like her favorite to bring it back for a refund when my trip was over. Her husband checked us out and then brought us outside the store to find us a map and give us some more recommendations to enjoy Portland with. Half an hour into my drive to Bar Harbor now and I don't want to put it down. Great taste, and even better service. read more

What if a passionate academic librarian used their superpowers to bless us with a comic shop? Ladies & gentlemen, Casablanca Comics. With an unassuming location, Casablanca lured us in to simply the most inviting & accessible comic shop I've ever been to. The organization is so user friendly & approachable that I instantly understood what section I was in & what I was looking at. An entire section for issues of series & runs that never made it to bound volumes are grouped together & reasonably priced. What a godsend to fans of minor characters or story arcs that didn't catch popular attention!! Definitely the work of a curator who pays attention to both how comics are published AND how much work it takes to chase specific issues. A collectors dream! Even if you aren't a comic fan, sections for graphic novels are carefully labeled & displayed. They have a section for biographical stories & have the handmade sign read with font that highlights the section like this "bioGRAPHICal"!!! Graphic novel biographies with a label that shows they are both graphic novels & biographies...there's a genius afoot in here! With an open floor plan & flowing, wall-lining bookcases, Casablanca bucks the default set up of comic shops being crowded, cluttered, denizens of jaded collectors who never grew up. This place is closer to a bookstore or even an art gallery for commercial art. It feels like the comics & books are treated respectfully, while still maintaining an air of fun, quirkiness, & exploration. It feels like this is how the creators of the work intended for their work to be seen. The layout is a delight & enough for you to visit. But, the layout is merely an extension of the staff. That is the real magic here. I strongly encourage you to visit & meet a treasure of a man who sews his own shirts & commands an encyclopedic knowledge of everything comics. He not only welcomed us in. He simultaneously gave us freedom to curiously browse and gave a quick blurb on notable issues/books we picked up. How can he know authors, artists, & plots by catching a glimpse of the book sleeve? Did he read everything here? Commenting on storylines, use of color by an artist, adaptations, & even appearances by writers at a convention - this guy knew it all. And not like, a pompous expert, either. He just conveyed the exuberance of a person living their dream. As inviting as the store itself. When other comic shops close, we'll lose an outlet & access. I've never been to such an organized comic book shop. Everything is in a logical alphabetical place and if you can't find what you're looking for the employees have a thorough knowledge of the store. For example, I was looking for Black Panther and I looked all over the Bs and the Ps and had no luck. Turns out it was under "J" for Jungle Action. They even found some pretty cool Black Panther/Spider-Man comics for me that I'll definitely check out next time I'm there. I enjoyed being able to peruse the shop without being asked if I needed help every couple minutes. It was a peaceful comic book perusing experience. But if you need help ask. I looked a couple times before asking and I could have found what I wanted a lot sooner. In short, I would recommend this shop to a friend. read more

Decent store, but the staff sucks. One in particular. Was thrilled to see another Casablanca Comics in Old Port, after having such a wonderful experience at their store in Windham. My wife and I had come to the location to visit BullMoose and spotted Casablanca upstairs. The store is nice and has a great layout. I noticed that they had a bigger selection than the other location and had a few more classic comics for sale. When my wife and I walked into the store, there was a customer at the counter who had the attention of both the employees, an older lady with short grey hair, in particular. Both completely ignored us as we walked in. As I looked at the selection, both women at the counter continued to ignore us. I was looking at some Star Wars Comics when the lady with the grey hair decided to leave. Before leaving, she turned to the younger woman and loud as could be, for the entire shop to hear, she said, "Watch those two," and then looking right at us. Lady, up yours you old hag. I was a cop and have never stolen a thing in my life. I had planned on purchasing about $75 in Comics that I had spotted and my wife wanted. Instead, I am now spending time to find the competition for this store and spend my money with them. To the judgmental old lady with the big mouth, kiss my a$$. You blew it with your crap attitude and your shit assumptions. All I can hope is that your boss reads this. If it's your store, you need to learn a quite a bit about customer service. At least the store in Windham has decent people working in it. read more

This is not your stereotypical dirty, cluttered, comic book store. It is clean, bright, and well-organized, but don't let that description fool you into thinking it's not an outstanding shop if it's not what you're used to. I love Casablanca Comics. I find the way they group their inventory excellent for browsing. In addition to comics, graphic novels, and books, they have a wonderful assortment of toys, accessories, buttons, stickers, and other knick-knacks. I usually end up leaving there with something I'm excited about. The staff, who are largely (entirely?) also the owners, are full of great recommendations and always good for a nerdy conversation. Are their prices as low as Amazon? No. They're not. But it's worth it for me to buy from them (though I still do some of this sort of shopping online) for the hands-on browsing experience and the expert advice. I also just like being in there. I can't tell you of how many comic stores I have been to in the past in which the staff or the owners could care less that you are visiting their store. If you want to stand out in the age of buying things online you need to make an impression on the customer. Casablanca comics will go out of their way to get you old comics, they will tell you about new and upcoming comics and if you are on their email list they have some awesome specials. They have a lot of other trinkets of geek-dom spread out throughout the store along with some awesome board games. I wish they would carry some more independent/ crazy comics but they do have a small selection near the cash registrar. Parking in back and if you find a comic that you like put yourself down the hold list so that you never miss an issue. read more

This place gets 5 stars because of the staff and the awesome amount of things they discount for various reasons (used books, but also new books that they just like! :), or things they have a lot of...). The great selection packed into their colorful little space doesn't hurt, either. Back to the staff: holy moly. I sent these guys a postcard just to thank them again for the great experience. The first day, the owner and I had a fun chat about books we liked and then he recommended a great lobster joint to us. The second day, another man was behind the counter and I asked him for recommendations. I told him some of the books I liked, and he proceeded to take me around the store telling me about all these other works I may like--many of them had already piqued my interest, but I got even more excited about them when he began theatrically describing the different stories (we're talking sound effects, and wild gesticulations!). It was a blast:), and I walked away with the first collection of "Morning Glories" (super-fun!) and a list of titles to come back for. read more

Anytime I walk into a place that specializes in geek or fringe interests, I have a quick litmus test on if I am going to stay and purchase something or if I never want to go back again. It's this: Do I have to prove myself to be "worthy" to be in their store? The places that make me cringe are the ones that treat me like the fake geek girl stereotype and ignore or quiz me. The places I love are the ones where the staff has a conversation with me, asks me what I am interested in, gives great suggestions - or you know, just treats me like a human. Casablanca has always been welcoming. I used to frequent the Portland store when I moved to Maine. I had not read much in the way of comics, and they were great to me. Thirteen years later, I am still not an expert, but my fandoms and tastes have been able to carve a path, and they are still amazing to talk to. The store in Windam is a bit bigger, and I hope it gets the customers out there it deserves. Plenty of offerings, well organized, and just friendly. The staff just simply cares about comics, graphic novels and the fringe things that come with it. I have never felt judged or less than there, and unfortunately, that is rare with comic and game shops. *Full disclosure - I wrote this review first for the Windam location, but because the two locations are not linked on here, and wanted to give both locations their proper accolades. Frankly, I never really had much of an interest in comics at all before I started coming here, and boy, what a high bar they set for all my future comic shop standards. :) The shop in downtown Portland is colorful and well-organized, with a wide and varied selection of comics and graphic novels and a savvy group of staff members who are friendly and helpful in pointing you towards stuff you might be interested in. They offer a subscription service, where you can tell them which comics you want to keep current on, and they set aside the single issues as they're released and save them for the next time you come in. They also have a completely free rewards program which gets you free stuff for different levels of spending at their shop. Rad! Accessibility: the main entrance to the building the downtown shop is in looks to be inaccessible, but there is a ground-level entrance at the back of the building. They share a bathroom with the other suites on that floor, so you have to ask for the key if you need it (and often they have it attached to something comical, like a giant plastic owl), and unfortunately the bathroom is not accessible: very tiny and without grab bars, etc. So wheelchair users shouldn't count on restroom use while they're here. Otherwise, everything in the shop itself is fine, and if you need help with anything while visiting, the staff is awesome. read more

I've lived in several different states, including 2 towns in Maine, and have frequented MANY different comic shops, but Casablanca Comics is not only my favourite, but is now my primary supplier of comic happiness (even though I now live over a thousand miles away). The staff, especially Ms. Melanie and Ms. Laura, have ALWAYS been incredibly friendly and helpful. Even though I can't visit their new digs, they continue to provide exceptional customer service by shipping my comic book treasure to me each month. The comics arrive well packed and in pristine condition. So, if you're ever in Portland, ME, and you're totally into comics, stop by Casablanca Comics. Naturally, they have all the major comics you'd expect, but they had a number of obscure, indie ones I'd never heard of, as well as the indie comics we were looking for (Invader Zim, Lenore). This was my weekly fix comic store all through my 4 years of college in the Portland area, and they served me very well. Their selection of new titles is excellent, and in the unlikely event that they didn't order the book you're looking for, they'll get it. Definitely on the nicer looking end of the comic store spectrum, Casablanca is well laid out, and its graphic novels are exceptionally well organized. Casablanca is for most intents and purposes, solely a comic book store. By saying this, I mean that their selection is almost exclusively comics and not much at all in terms of gaming merchandise. There's no reason the two need to be linked under one roof, but since they so often are, some might be disappointed by this. You'll be able to get your magic, heroclix, etc; and even your Munchkin, but not collectible game singles and not so much for specialty board games. All in all, a great store, with great service. The staff is friendly and they treat their regulars very well. I'm sure they treat first-time customers just fine, but if you're a weekly regular and they know you, then they will go out of their way to help you if they can. In the time I lived in the area and frequented the store, the manager helped me on multiple occasions: staying a few minutes after closing when I called saying I'd be late and wouldn't be able to make it in for the rest of the week, and even agreeing to being interviewed for a project I was doing for a Business class. NOTE: I mark they have a private lot, and they DO, but it's only open to the public after 5pm. read more

I've never felt like an outsider here, something that I cannot say for other shops in town. Generally, if they don't have it (but can order it for you), they are happy to do so. I shopped here for years due to the lack of other shops in the Portland area and never felt like a valued customer. A few of the staff are friendly but there are others who make you feel like the biggest jerk on the planet for daring to step into their 'Sanctum Sanctorum'. Casablanca Comics is the best comic book shop I've ever visited. It's clean, spacious, and well lit. The comics, trade paperback graphic novels, and other merchandise are shelved in an attractive and well-organized fashion. So many of the other comic book shops I've been to have resembled the basement bedroom of an antisocial, adolescent boy, with everything thrown in disorganized piles or shelved illogically. Not at this place. Everything looks great. I also appreciate that the store is quite spacious. I use a wheelchair and I never have any trouble navigating the store. If you're in a wheelchair or have any mobility disabilitty and can't manage the stairs into the building from the front street entrance, go around the block and look for a small parking lot that has an entrance right at pavement level. You'll be able to open the door and roll or walk right in. I'm listing it as handicappped accessible because it does have the accessible rear door. The owners and staff of Casablanca Comics are also great. I really enjoy friendly businesses. These people will all talk at length about comics and give great recommendations. In fact, they're ALMOST too nice! It's hard to walk out of there without spending $100 or more because they point out so much great stuff I didn't know about before. I'm so glad this place exists. Since the comic book stores in Augusta and Lewiston closed, it's the only comic book store I know of within driving distance. My girlfriend and I drive an hour each way, once a month, to get our comics from Casablanca Comics and it's more than worth the trip. By the way, they also give out free plastic slipcases for each single comic issue you buy, to help keep them in good shape. None of the other shops I've been to have done that! read more
