My favorite local bookstore. The staff is extremely helpful; the books are aplenty; the gifts and trinkets are adorable. Longfellow always has what I'm looking for, whether that's a card for a loved one or a new release of a book I've been waiting for. Their shelf of "staff recommendations" is a really great place to look if you're having trouble picking your next read, and their used book section is one of my favorites--clean used books at reasonable prices. Longfellow also has a customer loyalty program so you can get points and eventually money off your purchases for supporting local! I highly recommend this Portland gem.

Dropped by this used book store and it was just okay. It's a bit too "clean" for a used book store. A lot of the books sold are new and sold at retail price. What used books they have aren't very old. This is not the place to come if you want to find an old first edition copy of a classic or a cookbook from the 1950s. I did end up buying a book, so I guess it was still good enough that I found something I wanted. But if you enjoy going to a used bookstore and just spending the afternoon browsing shelf after shelf of used books, this is not the place for you. Go to Yes Books instead.

Come check out this place before it's extinct! Such a great bookstore located in the heart of downtown Portland. They had some pretty awesome selections, stuff I haven't seen on the shelves back home, ever! and so happy to see a wide variety or graphic novels and Sci-Fi, not a chain bookstore at all. The staff recommendations are great, I read a few of their choices and would happily concur. Their used books were in a great shape, I was able to walk away with a great travel book and New England folklore which is exactly what I was looking for. They have a sale cart outside with a couple neat finds. From kids books to magazines, you'll find something to walk with, I promise. I enjoyed spending sometime here during my trip, I only wish we had a bookstore like this back home . This is the kind of place that makes you want to stay and read every book on the shelf!

Portland has an insane, awesome amount of bookstores in immediate walking distance of one another. Longfellow was the only bookstore that I visited that was mostly a new book store. They have used books, yes, but honestly not that many, which is fine by me considering the amount of other bookstores you can peruse nearby. They had a lot of staff recommended books, with pretty descriptive narratives, and I thought that was helpful. It wasn't just like Susan LOVES this romantic novel.. it was more like Susan loves this story set in x time that touches on x topic and delves into this or that. I picked up a book, no staff recommendation tucked inside, and an employee said, almost within seconds of me picking it up, that it was overhyped. I thought that was pretty funny. Something else I loved, that dealt little with the books and more about the city and the store - someone, presumably a vagrant, was repeatedly knocking on the glass window of the storefront and then when he was done, threw his paper cup on the ground. Not one, but TWO Longfellow employees, one of whom was the guy who told me about the overhyped book, went outside and addressed 1. the knocking and 2. made him pick up his trash! Suck on that, jerk. Also, there was a cat for adoption in Longfellow Books. Purr-fect. Everyone loves a bookstore cat!

I popped in during a fall trip to Portland, and within two steps, I understood why this place stays busy. It's cozy, it's nostalgic, and it has that "you're definitely leaving with something you didn't plan to buy" -- and I absolutely did. The book selection is diverse. They do an incredible job curating local authors, Maine-themed reads, and those charming "I'll never find this anywhere else" gems. It's the kind of shop where you browse slowly because every shelf has a little surprise. The gifts + stationery section is dangerous (in the best way). Cute cards, puzzles, journals, mugs... basically an stress-free way to knock out gift shopping. Staff was friendly without hovering. Asked for a recommendation and got a great one -- points awarded. Yes, the aisles are a little tight. Yes, you might bump into people. But honestly? That's part of the cozy bookstore ecosystem. If you want Barnes & Noble spacing... this isn't that. And that's why it works. If you're in downtown Portland, Sherman's is an absolute must-stop. Whether you buy a book, a puzzle, or just soak up the cozy, indie-bookstore magic -- you'll leave happier than you walked in.

Well, this entire place is like a showroom of that paradise. I wanted to touch and play with everything. I adore places like this! By no means am I (yet) an antiquarian book collector; I've watched some YouTube videos and have been advised that once you start collecting, there's no end. I also can't read, so that isn't very helpful. I spent a fair amount of time perusing the shelves for a book I might buy, paying closer attention to the old hardbound volumes with decorative covers. There are many of them, but not all of them desirable. Behind the counter and hidden away is the good stuff you probably can't afford. I did walk away with a few inexpensive items, positive I would come back, not least thanks to chatting with Cathy, one of the owners, at the counter. What could have been a simple 5-second exchange, turned into a glorious reverie that I would gladly make a journey for, to have the pleasure of again.

Being from out of town, I was pleased with the prices. I can't find such deals at home. I was delighted to find a 9 book boxed set of my childhood favorite for $20. So much easy, free parking in their huge shared lot. 2. There's a Starbucks-adjacent cafe. NOTE: it's NOT actually Starbucks though, so you can't order ahead or pay with your app. Just a heads-up! The cafe portion of the bookstore is spacious and clean, with the tables themselves also being spaced quite far apart from one another. It creates a real sense of privacy no matter where you sit! 3. The atmosphere/layout here is very modern and inviting; the selection itself is enormous. Genres are clearly labeled, and there's a tremendous amount of content available no matter what you're looking for (so be prepared to spend some time here wandering around and taking it all in... then you'll probably have to come back, because there's no way you'll actually be able to take it all in on the first visit!). They've got new releases, popular books, recommendations, board games, and more. And, of course, the random armchair for you to sit and peruse your possible purchase. Obviously, support local first. But if you're looking for a slow-paced, wide open, very quiet, very tidy spot to spend a little bit of time (without feeling rushed or forced to purchase something) finding your next favorite read, I'd suggest visiting here!

We even visited during their opening day back in December 2023. They will be closing their doors on April 17th 2026. I will say that due to them getting their books from a local used bookstore they do not have the latest and greatest selection of books that you'd expect if they were a bookstore. I have not had complaints during any of our visits here. I have enjoyed their coffee as well as their chai lattes along with enjoyed all the cocktails I have tried. I have especially enjoyed the espresso martinis and have liked the fact you could in fact get the coffee drinks and cocktails any time of their hours opened. During the majority of their time open they would offer specialty espresso martinis as well. Some of my favorite cities to visit have many coffee cafe meets cocktail bar and is a concept I wish were more popular in Portland.
