how funny, i was trying to decide which category cz would fit in and couldn't. Technically speaking, Casa Zimbabwe is part of the University Students Co-operative Association (USCA), the main office of which occupies part of cz. I lived there in the fall of '97, then through spring of '99 i just visited a lot, and lived there again during the summer of '99.
Basically, it's super-cheap housing and food for university students. you can live there if you're a student at any college or university though.
My parents were scared of the place. there were scenes of 'where the wild things are' painted on some walls.. some weird trippy shit was painted on others and there were sketchy characters roaming the halls. Because in a co-op, the residents do everything, including cleaning and cooking, it was also rather dirty at times... but i think that sort of thing helps build character. Hey - I did my workshifts, everyone had to clean the bathroom at least once a semester.. the problem was though that if you don't do your workshift, you can pay a fine instead.
Some of the happiest moments of my life took place in this house. I miss them so much i could never express it in words. At the same time, so many people I know had to 'take a break from school' because of it., i can't really say it was a happy place. maybe even the opposite, it had a haunted feel to it almost...
There was a roof with a couch (i hope there still is), and the sunrise from that roof was gorgeous.
you could probably get any substance you could want at cz. they used to have raves in the house, sometimes, and keggers, often.
I made great friends there, for the first time in a long time. Where are they now? no idea... but that's just how hings go.
