    Panuchos de cochinita

I recently visited family in Merida and saw this place while walking. If you can read and understand Spanish culture, they have cute light fixtures saying on the walls. The choice of music makes you want to dance and it's not too loud like other restaurants. Our server was super friendly and he was bilingual! The food was authentic with loads of flavor and impressed with the presentation.

Went here for dinner and was not too crowded on a week night. We read about the guacamole so we had to give it a try. It was good with the mango and added goat cheese. We mashed it up further to our taste. For entrees we got chicken fajitas, poc chuc, and the queso relleno. I think the best dish was the queso relleno because it was unique and not what I have had before with a relleno. Nice waiter who was attentive.

I ended up at the Casa Maya because of one of those guys that are out & about soliciting for business. Local Yucatan cuisine is what Nestor promised and is exactly what I got, plus a complimentary margarita (small sample size) that was tasty. I also ordered a strawberry mojito that was fine. The food & service were good! I had the appetizer guac (it is a huge portion) that was very good. They add mango and have goat cheese on top. It was a pleasant change from the same ole guac. Salbutes de Cochinita Pibil were the main course and were tasty. It's a solid 4 stars. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is my socks weren't knocked off, but I would definitely go again. If you find yourself in Merida by the Plaza Principal/Plaza Grande, Casa Maya Restaurant is less than 5 mins away on foot.

Hotel with the room Frida and Diego frequented upstairs.

What was in that margarita? It was the best thing I ever tasted. And the guacamole! Omg.

I've never had a sit down meal here but the the main dining area is very nice and there is another section that is open to the sky. Customers are a combination of locals and visitors. It's enchanting at night watching the lighted towers of the old cathedral standing watch over the Merida night sky...sitting at a candle lit table with cool Yucatan breezes blowing. It's a far remove from the hustle and bustle of the narrow, crowded downtown streets and the lively plaza. I ordered a pumpkin seed-based salsa which was prepared table side in a stone vessel. My friend ordered the grilled fish with rice, pickled carrots, onions and sauces. Both were delicious. We also had nice drinks, red wine sangria, and beer. What was perhaps the best feature of the place is the excellent waitstaff who are bilingual, who are helpful with making you feel comfortable, who provide charming conversation and tips, and who are generally well trained in hospitality. Such a far cry from the dour and arrogant wait staff typically found in Washington DC restaurants. This is a good place for a quiet escape from the plaza crowd.
