    potato's bravas

We had just arrived in the Sants neighborhood from home and were looking for a light meal. Their dinner menu was mostly geared toward entrees. Our waiter suggested some small bites off menu. We enjoyed patatas braves, padrons and shaved jamon (€15). An excellent Spanish beer and red wine. With dessert €40. Football was playing on the TVs and our waiter chatted with us at length.

After a long trip, we stopped in the first place, exhausted and hungry. Got so lucky and had an amazing experience after 16 h with only airport and plane food.

If you're looking for some of the best seafood paella, tapas and sangria in Barcelona, you've found your place! We actually ended up visiting twice on our trip because we had to have the food one more time before leaving! The ambiance is perfect along with the staff. I highly recommend making sure you make this a must when in Barcelona!

Casa Martelo is a modern, sleek bar and restaurant featuring an absolutely huge menu of Galician seafood specialties, tapas, sandwiches, and burgers. Burgers might not sound distinctively "Spanish," but they're surprisingly popular in Spain, and the version here came with a dense beef patty seasoned with herbs and paired with melted cheese, grilled onions, bacon strips, tomato, lettuce, and a fried egg, all on a sesame seed bun, and held together with a toothpick and topped with a cherry tomato. As far as burgers go, however, I've definitely had better, as the bun and the vegetables were rather generic, the yolk of the fried egg was overcooked, and the burger overall was underseasoned. I was a much bigger fan of the seafood dishes, and my pick was the grilled razor clams, which were pleasantly chewy and came with a delicious garlic butter that accentuated the seafoody flavors. The seafood dishes are definitely the thing to order here, and I would've loved to try more of this section of the menu!

I jumped in just to get out of the rain but the staff were professional, attentive, and worked to understand my terrible Spanish. The food was good and reasonably priced.

I love this place. My friend and I made this our local bar on our week long visit to Spain. Sometimes we even went twice in a day. He day crew wasn't as friendly but we loved the Cortado every morning and the breakfast and tapas were inexpensive and always delicioso!! The cocktails were slammin' and strong and tasty and inexpensive. They have a 6 Euro cocktail menu. Ask if they don't give it to you initially. I got the Cosmo and my amiga got the margarita. Both were shaken and poured into martini glasses. Both were potent and delicious. I am going though withdrawal knowing I am not there. The night staff is excellent, friendly and warm. Joseph is an amazing waiter. Francesco is so cool. Amador is the bartender and makes fantastic cocktails. All around great bar, open til 2am. Casual, no frills and great at night for some food, cocktails, fresh orange juice or pee-gaming before a night out on the town. I would definitely go back when I'm in Barcelona.

Casa Martelo was close enough to our hotel and didn't have a siesta break. We had our first dinner in Barcelona here. The menu is quite extensive with tapas, plates, paellas and pastas. The staff is friendly and speak English and of course English menus are available. I wanted some paella; unfortunately here they have a two person minimum order for it and list the price per order, but we decided to go for it. We also ordered some Iberian ham, patas bravas and tomato bread. Our waitress was trying to upsell us on the premium one but I went with the normal lesser price one. Patas Bravas, delicious, it's all about the aioli sauce! The grilled tomato bread was so good as well. The bread had garlic rubbed on it and tomato lightly rubbed on it as well with a ton of flavor. The ham was the perfect amount of salty and sweet and melted in our mouths. Finally the paella came in a huge paella pan. One of the waitresses served all of it on two plates for us. I wish she had just left it to some of the rice could get crunchy. They had different variations of paella, but we went with the meat and seafood. There were lots of shrimp, chicken, clams, shrimp. I didn't notice any saffron flavor. The rice itself was fine, but I didn't like how there were bones in the dish (loose from the chicken and attached). The clams tasted a bit fishy, so I ended up just eating the shrimp and some of the chicken. The portions were huge, but again, I thought it was ridiculous that they required a two person minimum, which makes me think we should've went to some other small restaurants that advertised paella for $9-10 Euro for probably an individual portion. Was not much of a fan of the paella, and typically when I've had it back home, I stick more to the meat version. I did tell hubby that I read somewhere that tourists drink sangria and eat paella. When in Spain though! Now we know next time to just skip paella. Casa Martelo's prices are a bit more for everything - tapas, paella and dishes, but if you're in the area and looking for a solid tapas spot, Casa Martelo isn't a bad choice, there's just better options around, but you may also have to wait for them to re-open from the day break, as opposed to Casa Martelo staying open throughout the day.

This place was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel, and it did not disappoint! Came here twice, once for a quick dinner, and once for lunch (with dessert). The first time I had a duck liver pate salad, which was quite good, the pate was very rich and creamy and flavourful. My friend had a grilled squid dish with onions which was GREAT, super fresh seafood flavour. My other friend had a shrimp dish which he said was good, but looked small, especially considering that it was around 15 euros. Our second time here, I had a veal dish which was just mediocre - I liked that the breading was thin (not too much dough), but found the meat on the inside to be a little dry. My one friend had some kind of egg and meat dish though which she said was amazing and possibly one of her favourite meals in Spain! For dessert, I had ice cream enrobed in an almond shell, while my friend had a chocolate mousse. No complaints from me re: either one; they were both delicious and plated attractively :) Overall: seems like this place is a little hit and miss. Definitely some of their dishes are good, particularly the seafood, which is very fresh. Would not recommend that veal I had for lunch though. I would also caution that it's not exactly cheap, dishes at a minimum are around 8 euros ($12 CAN) and some are quite small especially considering their price. On the plus side, they have a large selection of desserts (many of them are gluten free, which my friend appreciated) as well as a large selection of imported and domestic beers!

The tapas and paella were excellent and so was the desert. I had one of the best irish coffee there and I also tried a local beer (1906 Red Vintage La Colorada) and that was one of the best beers I ever had. The service was also excellent and the place was nice and clean.

    Lots to offer!

The first day I had the veal and beef sirloin, medium cooked. The veal tastes like it was dry-aged and came with a pleasant flagrant along with the kick from charcoal. It was a bit chewy but every bite on the meat extracts more flavor from it. Beef sirloin usually is a safe choice, and it was a right decision for this restaurant. It was super tender and juicy, satisfying. The second day we went back for more, our friend recommended beef short-rib, and i also added a lamb chop. Unlike other short ribs I had in US, their rib was not as tender, but the more you chew on it, the more flavor came out of it. The lamb chop was surprisingly good, it's tender and juicy, also a bit fatty. I wanted to go back on the third day, but guess we need to try out something different in Barcelona, but I will definitely come back next time I'm there!

Good service - very hospitable owner, he gave us some good wine recommendations and all the food was served quite fast. The meat was just exceptional! Beef filet is an absolute must must try, very tender and fresh. The rest of the dishes were good as well. Perfect non touristic place for dinner!

I give this place 5 stars for service and 3 stars for food…read more Service was exceptional! The server came out and described all the special of the days and recommended his favorites. There is a menu in English as well. Certain dishes were amazing and some I was very disappointed. Too bad they don't have a special lunch menu because the bill for the two of us was quite expensive. So, if you're going to try this place out, here's what I had: Crispy pig mask - pretty much like bacon but lacking flavor. I believe the garnish in top was peppercinis? Or banana peppers. Not so sure. Iberico ham croquettes - took a bit and it was so crispy and tasty. Definitely get this. Their "special egg of the day" was similar to huevos cabriadios. This one came with asparagus. The portion was really tiny and everything was kind of mushed together. Lacking crunchy texture. Didn't like it at all. Steak tar tar - very nice. Came with 4 pieces of patatas which I didn't think went will with the tar tar. Instead, I spooned it onto the compliments pan con tomatoes they gave us. Patatas bravas - not your usual patatas with aioli. They add a sort of tomato paste to this dish so it makes it unique and interesting. It's good! Scallop on top of pork neck. This was the star dish of the meal. Scallops perfectly cooked on a fatty piece of pork. So much flavor, the right amount of crispness- this is a must have. All this + 2 drink came out to 58.20€.

Even though we did not have reservations, we were welcomed and treated like family instead of American tourists. The staff, particularly Victor, patiently explained the menu and we chatted with him as acquaintances. We dined here two out of the three nights we were in Barcelona because we had such a great dining experience. When we came back for the second time, every staff member remembered us and joked with us. Victor even remembered our order! Bamboral means poppy, and it's named after the city where the owners are from. One of the owners even came over to chat with us and told us about how the food was made. Here's what we had: -Ensaladilla Rusa & bonito tuna (4 euros): I'm not a potato salad fan, but this is a pretty classic tapa so we had to try it. It was just okay to me, but my husband loved it. -Burrata salad (8 euros): The burrata was a good size for sharing, while the asparagus and tomato added a nice contrast to the creaminess of the burrata. -Rice special (7 euros): Oh my gosh, whatever the rice special is, just order it! I ordered it both times, so I had two eye-rolling bowls of rice goodness. If you like the umami flavor of mushrooms, then you will love their rice special. -Scallop with pork jowl & asparagus (13 euros): The scallops were perfectly cooked, and don't be scared of the pork jowl; it's really more like pork belly. -Sweet potato bravas (3.50 euros): I would go back just for this simple, yet fantastic dish. The owner told us that their aioli is special because it's made with roasted garlic and tomatoes that have been braised for hours along with peppers from their garden. You can taste the quality in their aioli because it tasted much more complex than ones from the other tapas bars we went to. -Pork mask (8 euros): Okay, I know the name is rather strange, but this was amazing! Think of bacon that is topped with bits of garlic and vinegar to add some acidity to an otherwise heavy dish. It is a smaller establishment, so make reservations or be okay with sitting at the bar, which is what we did both nights. The atmosphere is friendly with lots of locals dining here. If you're looking for a fine dining experience with white table cloths and room temperature Evian, this is not for you. If you want to have great tapas at a reasonable price with great people, then come here!
