We fancied Chinese food for dinner and Casa Lafu was a place I had researched in advance and thought good which was also near Gran Via where we were staying. The restaurant interior is very attractively decorated, with window tables overlooking the city too. The menu is clearly aiming to be a higher quality place with a broad but smaller selection of dishes than the basic Chinese place, and somewhat higher prices, though not expensive. The food quality was very good generally. Most of our dishes were very while one was a bit disappointing. We really enjoyed the food. Service on the way in was prompt - we ordered quickly and food was soon arriving. But then when we were trying to leave, it took ages for anyone to visit our table. Eventually I had to go searching for staff, but we were at the far end of an upper floor and it seemed like there were almost no staff and those who turned up didn't even look our way. I picked this restaurant based on the reviews I had read in international travel magazines. It looks like it's a hit-or-miss establishment in terms of experience. The decor is lovely, though the bathrooms leave something to be desired and it seems like it all needs a bit of upkeep. I have no issues with hole-in-the wall establishments with amazing food, but this is not that - and not what it is portrayed as or seems to aspire to be. Even though we were speaking Spanish, the staff was incredibly rude. We requested a cocktail menu, we were told there were no cocktails, only wine - and were then provided with a wine list for only full bottles. I then saw other patrons consuming beer and had to ask if we could please have a beer. Why on earth the server could not have responded with "we have wine and beer, here are the options" I do not know. Each time we tried to order, the server was abrupt and appeared agitated. It felt like we were doing something wrong and it set the tone for a terrible evening. I was shaking with fear each time I had to interact with the server. It led to an anxiety-riddled experience as I was unable to enjoy the food at all. We were even told at one point that we were ordering too much food. I was desperate to try to get something that would be good. The food was OK to mediocre at best. I eat Szechuan cuisine regularly and I was profoundly disappointed. The dumplings and dim sum items are fine. The meat served on a sizzling skillet was OK, but it is literally just that. The Mapo tofu was akin to something that would be thrown together by a novice with no authentic training in the kitchen - completely lacking in flavor and seemed to be made in less than 5 minutes. I use this dish as a barometer - and this place fell well below benchmark expectations. This was far from gourmet cuisine of any kind or even the flavor experience of a hole-in-the wall establishment. Other patrons appeared to be treated far better, which I don't quite understand - perhaps they had bigger tables and the staff assumed it was more worth it. We had a reservation and we were on-time. We were patient and respectful. I would have paid well over $200 for a quality meal on my last night in Madrid, and I sorely regret that I picked this establishment. read more

My family all wanted Chinese for lunch, but I am not a fan of Chinese food, as most restaurants I have been to in the U.S. are mediocre. I am so glad I agreed to eat at Casa Lafu. I loved the food. I got the Imperial Pork, which was tasted. Our favorite dish was a stir fry with lotus root, potatoes, tofu skin, cauliflower and peanuts. It was amazing. Get the onion pancake, we ordered a second one as our dessert. We are headed back for dinner on our last night in Madrid, and I would definitely return here on a future visit to the city. read more

Sour fish are fresh and delicious. Soy souce onion garlic steamed scallops are so good and fresh. So grade to have hollow Vegi in here and satisfied my home sick. This restaurant are clean, dishes are authentic, delicious. read more

The place was amazing. We sat upstairs in a modern elegant dining room in our own private room. The waitress helped us tremendously in selecting dishes that she knew we would like since Chinese restaurants in the United States are different in nature then most in Europe. Her choices were amazing. From the pecking duck, which was some of the best we had ever had, to the special fried rice, it was amazing. Food is wonderful here. Very authentic Chinese. Unfortunately the service is god awful. The Spanish waiter we had was absolutely terrible. After 20 minutes of waiting for a menu, we had to get up and ask him for one even though he kept looking at us. And he was also the same person who sat us! He also forgot our dim sum. Drinks and the getting the bill took far too long. The rest of the staff (Chinese) were kind and picked up his slack. Like I said, amazing food, but service needs works, especially being it's in such a touristy area of the city. read more
