Their easy listening Adult Contemporary Soft Rock sound blasted out of transistor radios all over the world in the 70's. Karen not only sang but played the drums as well which was really unheard of from women at the time. She paved the way for women singers & many groups of today. Her brother Richard created the arrangements sang & played Keyboards. Rolling Stone ranked them #175 of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. They even met President Nixon & Miss Piggy. Much of their music has been long forgotten & no longer played on the radio. Now there is a new Hardcover Book about the duo. The city of Downey CA. is also honoring The Carpenters with a Free exhibition & Free Parking at The Downey Library which takes you on a musical journey. I never met any of the Woodworth family, but my family may have picked up a few of their things…read morewhile my Uncle Basil lived at that address for a decade or more. Some old things that "came with the house" including some antique painted landscapes and an 1882 painting of Yosemite Valley, a 1700's butcher block, an antique telephone, and a pair of wrought iron rooster lamps ended up with my family. There was a stable, horses, and some outbuildings that held my Uncle's 1930's Duesenberg. I visited that place with my family a dozen or more times between 1959 and 1966. There were wedding receptions, family reunions, funerals, or just family get-togethers. There was a massive 20 foot tall avocado tree that grew up the side of the house at the back porch service entrance and we always went home with a large brown paper grocery bag full of avocados. My brother and I loved playing their baby grand piano in their living room and watching Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color and Bonanza on their HUGE 25" color TV set in a large open landing at the top of the stairs. Nobody else we knew had color TV in 1961. It got to be when there were more funerals than weddings, my uncle and aunt either sold or donated the place to the City of Bell Gardens. Lots of fond memories attached to that place. Just a few of us left who remember those days.

Playground equipment geared for the 3 to 12 year old kids. Lots of covered sheds and picnic tables- those are available for Cerritos residents to rent, but otherwise are free for use. Also has grills if you want to barbecue. Clean bathrooms, onsite toddler pre-K programs offered. Lots of well maintained grassy areas and shady trees.

It's a great place to bring your lunch or sit on the grass and enjoy a good book. The play area was remodeled not long ago and is a great place for kids to play and run around. If you're into visiting historic homes like I am, the Neff Estate is a must visit. Tours are given every third Saturday of the month from 2-4 pm. Tours are free, donations accepted. The George House and Neff Barn are also on site, however they are not part of the tour. During La Mirada's Halloweenfest, the George House is open for viewing and the Neff Barn is turned into a haunted maze. There is a beautiful gazebo on site as well, perfect for special occasion photos.

I visited the museum with a group of parents from Corona Elementary and the staff was very kind , polite , and patient with us . We were able to take a lot of photographs , read all the descriptions , visit the garden . As a School employee and a member of the SPA 7 Community , it was very interesting to see that Bell shared its newspaper with Maywood and Cudahy . You also find information about the city's collaboration with Bell High School to make the pool construction possible . Captivating time capsule , beautifully presented exhibits , short but sweet trip in to the past. Unbelievably free!

While going through one of the hardest moments in my life I found very little things that would…read morecomfort me. Generally speaking, most people and nurses would understand and have a sense of compassion, it is unfortunate that the few that are not would have to ability to take what little comfort I found while trying to support my husband after having a stroke. I would visit Monday through Sunday attempting to find any sense of normalcy. One particular nurse named Toshi came in an asked, "Do you need anything?" I was assuming he was speaking to my husband the patient (Jonathan) So I did not pay too much attention, he then said that I needed to have the mask on. I completely understood and I told ok I will, I noticed him staring at me so I told him I was going to finish a math problem I was working on really quick, and I will put it on. Within seconds he called the charge nurse, I told the charge nurse the same thing that I was going to put it on I just wanted to finish a math problem before I was timed out. I was confused because I agreed to put it on and I though that if I advised them why I didn't want to stop right away they would understand. I spoke with the doctor because she was advised of the problem, I did not feel a sense of understanding. I understand there are polices and I am also aware of the rise in covid cases, but the truth of the matter is that I kiss my husband and we are well over 6 feet from anyone. I was more than willing to put on a mask, but I guess I did not do it fast enough. As if that was not enough the nurse Toshi returned twice after that, after returning the first time my husband requested a charge nurse to speak to, Toshi failed to get the charge nurse but came back again to provide me with the hospital rules. All I am saying is that I feel these nurses should have some compassion, I agreed to put on the mask, but I felt like a child being scolded. Even after speaking with the doctor, she stated she would switch the nurse but didn't, our concerns fell on deaf ears. It's been hard, if Toshi would have just given me 5 minutes.

Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom?
