I reluctantly visited the store after I said I would never come again. The store is conveniently in my neighbourhood. I decided to try once again!! The heavyset black guy that consistently sits behind the counter never gets up. He is never eager to assist. His is never pleasant; in fact is is down right rude!!! I can't imagine why the owner continues to allow him to work up front in his store. He would be better served having him open inventory in the back & tear down boxes!!!! I have been to this shop numerous times. Years ago the service was very good. But the last few years it has been just insulting. The big fellow that sits behind the desk does nothing to get up and help you if you have a question. He will point, but never come to you and offer suggestions. Nor has he ever said "thank you"after I have made a purchase. I vowed today to never, ever shop at that shop again. If you're looking for good customer service go elsewhere. I visited this business Nov 30th at 5:30 PM which was 30 minutes before closing. I approached an employee that was behind the register and said, "I'm in town for the holidays. Do you have any specials or black Friday deals"? The employee responded with"we don't do deals ". I informed the employee what I usually spend on cigars and was directed towards items I was familiar with. I made my selections, returned to the register and was asked to see my identification. I handed the identification to him and wondered, at 67 years old, do I really look that young. Once my items were rung up I paid with a debit card and the employee bagged my items and gave them to me. I then pointed at the receipt from the sale (still on the printer), and asked, "is that my receipt?" The employee's response was "it's yours if you want it" and I proceeded to remove the receipt and exit. I will not be returning after receiving such poor customer service. read more

After shopping here for cigars and finding everything I wanted was in stock, this, on one visit has definitely impressed me enough to become my go-to shop. I like the atmosphere and the location. The young lady who waited on me was friendly and helpful. Everything is easy to find. The selection was a bit overwhelming for my novice self. There are so many brands of cigars to choose from, but I'll definitely enjoy going back, again and again until I have exhausted all of my desired selections and tried several others. The shop is conveniently located on Northwestern Highway, in close proximity to restaurants I frequent. I bought two of my favorite cigars and also tried a new one. The prices seemed to be lesser than what I've paid elsewhere. It would be fabulous if the seating area and the parking lot were a tad larger; since several usual suspects seem to gather here to smoke while they are purchasing their favorite sticks. read more

Bad customer service. After my purchase I passed the kiosk to register for the loyalty club. After registering, I asked if I could apply my $100 purchase that I just made. I as told no, I needed to request before completing purchase. I asked why he didn't ask me before my purchase and was told I needed to ask him. This is bad customer service with a bad attitude. Let's be honest, smoking is not a good habit, never has been, never will be...but there are those of us that (occasionally) enjoy a decent cigar. That being said, I have always found the quality and selection at JR's to be excellent. I have come to the point where I'd rather not buy cigars at other locations because consistent humidification is so important. At JR Cigars, the whole store is the humidor. JR's does have some "characters" working behind the counter, but I have always found them to be helpful and knowledgeable. read more

Great selection. I come here to pick up cigars that are no longer made, so I swing by whenever I am in town to restock. I would give this five stars if they had a bigger sitting area and better ventilation. I love hanging with the staff and clientele, but there is very little space. As for ventilation, I know it is a cigar place but, I have been in Blues bars with better air quality. Really like this place, just want to hang out for a smoke. read more

They are getting one star because zero was not an option. I have been going to the Southfield, MI store for over 10 years. Today their new policy is to require a picture of my drivers licence to sell me cigars. Just seeing it was not enough. With all the identity theft today, I am extremely uncomfortable giving anyone a full copy of my drivers licence. I am 62 years old and obviously old enough to purchase tobacco products. I called customer service at the home office and was told it is company policy. The rep was very polite and "sent an email to have a corporate manager call me". Great spot for premium cigars. Huge selection, a ton of boutique lines you can't find everywhere. Viaje, warped, illusione, crowned heads, etc. and even their "alternatives" are good for the price. The manger Greg might be the most knowledgeable tobacconist in SE Michigan. He's been around and really knows his stuff. Even the young staff know what they're doing. Also, if you want some entertainment while you're there, try to make the younger black-haired girl laugh.. it's a sound to behold. Just an FYI for anybody looking, they don't carry cigarettes or any e-cig/vape stuff. Overall, highly recommend this place. read more

Walked in and the big guy behind the counter looked at me, turned and walked away. Hmmmm....the only thing he could tell about me was my skin color. Im a middle aged physician, conservative, polite, and speak well...sooooo... Could brown skinned customers be an issue for the management of this store? This wasn't my first time in the store, and I had the same unfriendly reception before too. Oh well...I don't spend where I'm disregarded. I had been buying from the JR web site, because every tobacco shop within miles of me seems to cater toward cigarette and "tobacco use only" customers. Finding pipes and decent pipe tobacco is a challenge, to say the least. When I found out there was a storefront in Southfield, I had to pay a visit. I'm not 100% sure why the site doesn't list the Detroit location, but inside, they have most of the things you'd see online, and in the same packaging. (5-packs, JR-branded cigars and coffee, etc.). The store is PACKED, and with about 8 customers when I was there, felt a bit close. I had a difficult time figuring out how the cigars are organized, but as I browsed, they seemed to have all of my favorites. The pipe section, as most pipe sections are, was mostly unloved and off in the corner behind the "lounge" area. So, if you want to look through the dusty tins of tobacco, you may need to hover over someone (or politely ask them to move aside). If you like to cellar your pipe tobacco, there's probably a goldmine here. There were also some pipe tobacco blends and what looked like a couple of bulk offerings (I wasn't sure if the Dunhill 965 was actually Dunhill, or a knockoff). I would have tried the Belle Isle on my most recent visit, but there didn't seem to be a clear way to actually buy the stuff, and I had been distracted by the presence of Dragon's Milk cigars. Yes, that's right. A joint venture between New Holland Brewery and Asylum Cigars. I had heard of them, but they've been a white whale until now. At least... in terms of being able to buy a single before dropping nearly $100 on 5. As always, I left a happy man. One thing to note, though: as a cigar store, JR is exempt from Michigan's Smoke-Free Air Law, and customers are delighted. But, this also means that if you want to slip in and out secretly, you can forget about it. You'll smell like cigar smoke when you leave, unless you're the only customer in the store. Some people won't mind at all, but if you're keeping it on the down-low, bring a change of clothes. read more

I enjoy both cigars and pipes. While visiting Detroit recently I stopped by JR. It was a highlight of the trip which otherwise was for a family event (wife's family). I called and my call was answered by "Mr. Fantastic'. A bit of a wise guy he answered my questions and invited me down. The store is one of a very few still existing old fashioned tobacconist experiences. Friendly informed staff and a collection of amiable characters hanging out enjoying a cigar. I was interested in pipe tobacco and they invited me to try whatever I liked of their own store concocted blends. I tried and purchased two, "Lost Scotsman" and "Golden Oaks". Both are wonderful and a tremendous bargain. I puffed away and shmoozed. On my next trip I'll hang out there more often. read more

Pleasant. I was overwhelmed walking in as I'm not a cigar smoker. I was looking to add these to my boyfriends Sweetest Day collection. I was able to ask for what I wanted and taken directly there. Let me start by saying I am by no means a devotee, aficionado or expert cigar smoker. That being said JR Cigars was recommended to me by my brother who is in fact the cigar expert that I am not. So I walk in the place all bight eyed and bushy tailed so excited to get some stogies to go in the humidor that I just procured and spent hours watching youtube to see who had the best method for seasoning said humidor...that's right I said seasoning(Cigar guys or gals will know what I mean). The big guy behind the counter looked up and then proceeded to ignore me. I didn't take it personal because it was obvious buy all the printed papers of cigar reviews that I was carrying that I had no clue what I was doing. You would think they would welcome a newby to the dying art of cigar smoking but I digress. There was a little old lady in the back corner who did say hello to me and hurriedly went back to didaling some cigar boxes. There were a couple of young twenty something's working there as well but hell you know how the millennial's are they reeked of self entitlement(probably the big guy with the glasses and cigar in his mouth kids). Long story shorter I purchased a couple of 5 pack cigars no thanks to the help and a rectangle humidifier for the humidor. The big guy in glasses rung up the sale and offered to sell me a torch. (Cigar lighter) I said sure why not so he gives me one right next to the register and says here you go (half full with fluid) so I say do you have any new? He says this is new. I say do you have one in a box? He says they all come like this. I say OH no thanks I will get one from another place. I'm on my way out the door and I hear him say it must be a full moon out. Really a full moon. I will never spend another dime in this place. read more
