Okay, there are bottle shops, and then there are the Caewyn Cellars. This place isn't your ordinary bottleshop. Sure, you can by beer, and wine, here, but the thing is that unlike your typical bottleshop, this place sells not just craft beer, but some highly specialist beers. Mind you, when I say specialist beers, I am talking about beers that are actually really, really expensive - something like fifteen to twenty dollars for a large bottle. Okay, that is probably expected with some craft beers, but these aren't your standard craft beers, these are pretty specialist ones. In fact they have so many beers that the fridges themselves are devoted to a specific type, However, the thing that disappointed me here is that they only deal with craft beers, and Australian ones at that - if you want the international varieties then you are going to have to look elsewhere (like overseas).

Carwyn Cellars is a trendy little cellar door/bar in Thornbury. They have a great selection of alcohol to choose from and a lot is local or special batch ... or special for some reason or another. We stopped on to grab some Hawkers Imperial Stout, Bourbon Barrel aged. Thankfully the had a lot in stock and we grabbed a couple to take home. While we were here we decided to have a quick drink. It's not cheap (but they are fancy beers, a lot with high alcohol content). We sat outside and enjoyed them. It was a bit chilly, but we've been here in summer and enjoyed the sunshine. All the sensible people were inside today! I find the service quite aloof here and that's the one thing that lets them down. Otherwise a good spot to visit to try some fine beers.

You've got to love a business that declares itself "In an open relationship" and interested in "men and women" on its' facebook page. Carwyn Cellars is a cheeky independent purveyor of alcoholic beverages with a great range of local wines. The shop has a slightly retro vibe to it, with a few old wooden keg barrels and a weird kind of faux grass-ish floor. It's easy to browse and doesn't have any real elements of wank to its' style. There's a good selection of nicely priced cleanskins, along with a few less common beers and ciders. The staff are pretty relaxed and highly familiar with their products, and always good to refer to for recommendations.

This has all the stock and prices of a chain-type bottle shop with the service and respect of a neighbourhood grocers. That's not to say they can match the more 'boutique' style, specialist beer shops, but their range of beers, wines and spirits and regular bargains keep me coming back. Thankfully, the wine selection here is physically broken up into varietal groups. The filing system is dewey-decimal-like in its logic and, though there are rarely helpful assistants guiding you to a variety and price-point of desire, equally, there's never the hard sell or pretence that goes with the smaller stores and if you know what to look for, you're guaranteed a bargain. The beer selection is extensive by slab, but they do lack in variety by singles or imported rarities. But again the range, the prices and the lack of pomp involved in shopping here guarantee a pleasant experience for the savvy booze shopper. Plus, the veggie department is right next door! Win-win!

SHAMEFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE,…read more Psarakos really needs to look into their managers and employees, manager by the name of Nick is by far the one who needs a good lesson in customer service and body language, presses his authoritative title onto customers with a condescending attitude and had us feeling mortified and created a scene for all other customers to see. Being in management myself for a large upscale organisation where customer service is imperative to success in business, I was ashamed by the lack or nill customer service experienced from Psarakos. We have gone to Psarakos on a weekly basis for a fruit and veg, but we will longer be coming back nor our family and friends.

It is certainly not a cheap place where you would go to pick up a case before heading off to a party or barbeque. But if you want serious quality or have a particular taste for quality booze then Harvest is the place for you. The man who owns and works at Harvest is very very knowledgeable and friendly. He is passionate about quality liquor and wants to pass on his knowledge to anyone who wants it. Harvest is also a great place to go to buy presents for friends and family who enjoy a good beverage from time to time. And they also stock a range of class European canned beers for those who are heading to festivals like Meredith and Golden Plains and don't want to drink either VB or Carlton Draught.

Stocking an incredible range of wines, beers, ciders, spirits and more, Harvest Wine & Liquor is hands down the best off license in the area and boasts probably the best range of organic wine that I've yet found in Melbourne. As well as retailing, Harvest Wine & Liquor arranges roughly two tastings a month either within the shop itself or at neighbouring High Street bars, and there are invariably excellent offers available on the night on bottles of cider and wine. Predictably, Harvest Wine & Liquor isn't cheap. This isn't the place to nab yourself cheap cleanskin or cooking wine. But if you're looking for an excellent selection of high quality booze, Harvest Wine & Liquor is the place to go. Bar none.
