Being open al hours of the night the Railway Bottle Shop does tend to get some crazy, drunken characters so keep your wits about you if you are there at possible 4am on a Sunday morning.

Perfectly located at the top of Chapel St where many a drunk walks past towards the end of the night on the way home, this humble little bottle shop has diversified into a hot dog vendor. Talk about leaving a good taste in your mouth, first they sell you drinks at the beginning of the night and then later on just when you thought you were about to go home... Bam! There's a hot dog.

Today I spent time looking at the Pinot Noir section; its becoming a fast growing and established habit at any store I go into. Pretty great, I'm wondering why I haven't reviewed earlier.

Shame the service, suggestions and someone to talk to about the great selection is completely absent. I was there in a Friday evening, looking for a nice bottle to take to a local BYO restaurant. The girl there was more interested in stocking the fridge than anything else. When I asked if I could pay...? She replied, while sitting on a case of white wine: "....is that all, is there something else...?"

Well, I was going to say that I thought that a bottle shop with a bar was going to be cool, but…read morethen again there are a lot of places like that, it is just that the bottle shop tends to be next door, though it isn't always actually a part of the bar. Anyway, this place was still pretty good because you go buy and have here, and just take away, and I'm not sure if the prices were all that different either (it is usually more expensive to consume the liquor on-premises). Oh, and they have a pretty awesome selection of beers as well, so I'll definitely give it that.

Fridges lining the walls, stacks of beer cartons all over the place. But to the side of the store stretches a bar where you can sit down and have a drink - most likely beer or spirits. To give you a picture of the clientele, think a mix of backpackers, kids that just got their first ID and the usual crazies that haunt Fitzroy Street. My idea of fun? Absolutely not. But I'm not going to give it 1 stars because for the many visitors that it attracts, it's right up their alley. If you're looking for a dirt cheap night out, want to relive your drinking tales at dive bars in Thailand, or just somewhere to duck in and pick up a few beers on the way to somewhere else, this will do the job.
