I visited this store for the first time on Friday with my mom, and unfortunately it was a very uncomfortable experience. I drove 45 minutes specifically to find Stella & Chewy's stew, which is the only brand my dogs eat. I was actually really excited at first the store is big and has a great selection. However, almost immediately after walking in, I got the feeling that we were being watched. At first I tried to ignore it, but it quickly became obvious that multiple employees were following us around, pretending to stock shelves while staying close to us the entire time. I've worked in asset protection before, so I can recognize that kind of behavior. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable and anxious, especially since I already deal with social anxiety. At one point I even told my mom I wanted to leave because it felt like they thought we were stealing, but we stayed since we didn't drive that far for nothing. When we finally checked out and were leaving, several employees stood near the entrance just staring at us, which made the situation even worse. I've never felt so judged and unwelcome in a store before. What should have been a positive first visit turned into a stressful and upsetting experience. I won't be coming back and will just continue purchasing elsewhere. read more

I've been shopping there for 20-25 years. I've spent thousands of dollars there. I'm usually recognized by employees, managers, and it's always been a pleasurable experience. However today I ride my Harley there... so I have a backpack to load all my stuff in to get it home. I needed cat food, frozen shrimp and bloodworms for the fish, flake food, and all the replacement filters for my tank. It was an easy 80-100 dollar purchase. Dude at the front welcomed me in, I got the red plastic hand cart and was headed to the cat section but he asked me to put my backpack under the counter. I said no! My personal stuff is in there and I'm not leaving it unattended. I got 12 cans of canned cat food, got over to the freezer section to get the shrimp and another employee came up and told me to give him my backpack and he would take it up front... again I said no so he told me to take it up there myself. I set the basket down on the floor and headed towards the door. On my way there I asked him if he was going to tell the lady with her purse hanging off of her shoulder so she could easily put whatever she wanted into it if she would put her purse under the counter... how bout that lady over there? And that lady and that lady???? No, he wasn't! But me, a 65 year old man riding a bike and needs the backpack to put his purchase in needs to just let it sit by a counter. I would literally have to take that pack off of my back,set it down on the floor, unzip the mf... zip it back up and put it back on my back if I wanted to steal something. But a lady with a purse hanging next to her hip and could easily drop anything into it is ok????? Make that make sense! The hell with that store! Stuff is cheaper on chewy.com anyway! I'm brand new to starting a planted fresh water aquarium and wanted to start with amano shrimp since they are great cleaners and do not breed in freshwater. Carters in Stockton was the only place that I could find that advertised amano shrimp. I bought 4 and they took to the tank well... until about a month later when they started breeding and filled my tank with 30+ shrimp. These are not amanos, but wild type dwarf shrimp that breed frequently and constantly. I highly recommend having the aquarium attendant confirm each shrimp selection or going someplace else. read more

I was able to get the fish i wanted. They have an amazing variety and healthy fish. You can tell they care about their aquariums and a beautiful presentation. Hector was wonderful at assisting me and getting all the fish i wanted and even asked me critical questions to make sure my fish are compatible. Love this place. I have two 100 pound dogs so I have to fill up a cart! I have a bad back and they always help me load my 40 pounds bags, help me at check out, and take my bags to the counter, and load them in the car. My husband recently took our dogs there to get shots which I usually do myself but it was such a blessing not to have to go to the feed store and do it myself due to my back. My dogs are very easy to give shots to so I usually do it my self but in this case I was happy that they did it due to my back issues. Always friendly and helpful staff. read more

Fish keepers beware. I came to this location after having used the Modesto location before and their aquatics department was always very small. On Thursday 3/2/23, my husband and I made the drive to this location to check out their aquatics. We ended up making a purchase of a few freshwater fish, including Angelfish, and we're on our way. Angelfish are semi territorial fish and do have the ability to get along in community tanks. However after 24 hours of observation, one of the new angels was being aggressive to everything in the tank. We added more covering, plants etc and it didn't remedy. So, we realized we didn't have a receipt when we left so I called them to explain. This is where it gets great. I did not catch the name of the woman who answered the phone but I think it was Kelly, she needs to be fired immediately. She is quite frankly the rudest person I have ever dealt with in LPS. (Local Pet Stores). I explained the situation to her. She immediately cuts me off the say, that's not their fault the fish is aggressive and they don't do refunds. Yeah, cool, why not listen to me. First of all, how about an apology for the lack of getting a receipt for a store that's over 45 min drive from me. How about an apology for the current situation. Oh that's right, as she kindly put it, "not their fault". I told her she was being absolutely belligerent and ugly. How can you treat a customer hostile from the jump? Wow. "You can donate the fish back but you won't get your money". How ugly can you be? Ive surrendered fish to your Modesto store, FOR FREE, that you got a quick profit from I know for fact, so don't be so god damn rude. So I called the Modesto location because she tried to call too and save face. The Modesto location agreed to do some type of exchange since they seem to have half a mind. They also apologized for this woman's disgusting behavior and didn't seem to be shocked. Do you guys get these calls often? Your comments section shows you do. One great pet store that is hard to find these days. Staff is friendly and they have everything for most pets from birds to guinea pigs to fish. Plenty of animals to look at. They have a large variety of baby birds. Prices are pretty high for the birds. Cages are kept pretty clean. Food and supplies are fair priced with good variety. read more
