This rec has very disrespectful workers towards kids. They kicked two kids out because they were having fun and playing around and then when people are playing basketball and do something wrong and they admit to it they always kick them out without a second chance that's right it's not a rec to go to if you want a real rec to go to where they will give you good workers and a great time go to Tom. Another thing their rec is not really clean. Their lockers are very disgusting and their bathrooms smell really bad in the floor on that bathroom is very disgusting. read more

Locker rooms are filthy. I like working out first thing in the morning, then shower & change to head for work. I have to bring disinfectant wipes & paper towels to clean the shower every morning before using it. There is always hair stuck to the walls & the drains are full of hair. I have to wipe carefully or the black mold on the grout between the tiles will flake off & then I have to wipe that too. It's horrible showering surrounded by black mold on the grout. The floors have dirt & hair as if they are rarely swept. Hot water is hit or miss. Now it's been out for 3 weeks. I never realized how disgusting this place was until I switched to the Tom Muehlenbeck Center when the water was out in November. I went there until it closed for renovations. Now with the water out AGAIN, I've switched to the Liberty Rec Center that is 15 minutes further drive. It's a smaller rec center but so much nicer. At least I save time & money not having to clean the shower. I just do my workout & shower & change no problem. Who knows when or if Carpenter will EVER get their water heater fixed but even when they do, I'm not sure I'll go back because it's just so filthy. If you don't need to use the locker room, this rec center is great but if you do - go someplace else!! It's disgusting!!! read more

Be careful. I had my wallet stolen out of the locker that I locked with a lock provided by the rec center. Looks like the employees have a scam going where they rob people that they've issued locks to. Never coming back. read more

UPDATE Mar 2021. As of Mar 10th it is optional to wear a mask in the center. The staff will continue to do so for the time being and practice virus mitigation. This place has it all and caters to many sports like badminton, volleyball, pickle ball, etc. they lockers and showers are clean, the pool is nice and the weight room has plenty of cardio machines, free weights, and machines. read more

Good facility but lazy staff in the afternoon and evenings. There are no proper posters in the weight/ cardio room. You can see all ages, even 8 or so roaming in the weight room in large groups making so much noise and risking everyone with trial and error of the equipments. No visible posters to restrict the kids. Friday and weekend becomes a picnic spot and the place turns out be free for all. So much noise and slamming of weights, lifeguards who don't even know the rules written on the board. Overall a good place with lazy and hide behind the reception, chit-chat always staff in the evenings. Put up some clear posters to restrict the kids and slamming of weights in the weight/cardio area. read more

The location of this Recreation Center is great!!!! It usually isn't too packed unless soccer season. However, it is way better than Tom M. Rec Center... that one is beyond crowded. They have a great pool and slide area for the kids. The indoor track is wonderful..... truly remarkable. The facility is overall VERY well kept up... everything is clean etc. My only downside is that there are no sweat towels at this location... :/ Come here weekly! read more

It's a nice up to date facility. Just disappointed with a the pool. It's only 3.5 to 5 feet deep and not that man lanes. You are better off at oakpoint or mullenbeck Center for swimming. There is also the aquatic center too. I just wish they had more lanes with a few for swimming laps not walking laps. read more

I had no idea this even existed till today! They have numerous facilities, and everything seems to be handled in an organized manner. Went there wIth fam to play badminton. They provide racquets, birdies, a net, and a room. Also tried the air hockey and foosball tables. Two thumbs up! Will definitely be back! read more

I used to go to liberty recreation center because it is the closest but since it is closed due to renovations, I like Carpenter probably because it was renovated. It does have a pool but it apparently is not as great as the other recreation centers. I primarily just go to the cardio and the weight room. There are plenty of machines which is nice! They also have the shades for when the sun gets in our eyes since all the machines face the windows. I had some issues with my recreation membership but the staff took their time and sorted it out. I appreciate all the help! They maintain the locker rooms and restrooms and the overall building very well! read more

Been coming here since I was a middle schooler! I used to play basketball and pingpong then but now I've been frequenting the cardio/weight room. Plenty treadmills, ellipticals, cycling equipment. Also they have free lockers where you can store your belongings. Monthly charges are $19 - if you're a college student/grad student back in Plano during the holidays, I would suggest coming here to keep in shape. It's cheaper than 24 Hr Fitness/Lifetime Fitness and the facilities are clean and up to date. read more

Pros: I have taken my daughter to several ballet classes. Her teacher has been Jennifer Russell & she is great with the kids, very patient and really takes her time with each of the little ones. I have taken my daughter to other ballet classes where they either seem to be to hectic or way to strict. Ms. Russell strikes a great balance, she seems to create a fun and calming atmosphere where the kids can learn and enjoy themselves without getting overwhelmed. The gym on the first floor is very clean, well maintained and not very busy during the day. It also seemed to have a staff member there ready to assist in anyway they could. Cons: The classrooms are not always cleaned and/or set up properly for the next class by staff members. For instance, a sewing class was held in the kids dance room and left needles on the window seal. Unfortunately, one of the little toddlers got one stuck in her tutu and picked up another. Luckily a parent caught it in time before she was hurt. My daughter has taken several different educational classes here, where the teachers seem to be disorganized, loud and oblivious to the students. The teachers running the other classes have been found to be wanting. read more

I like the swimming pool and enrolled my kid for the summer swim class. Last year it started with 9 kids in one shallow pool. I had a conversation with their head coach Cathy and from next day onwards they split the class. Last year end of each session they gave us a report card explaining about their progress, pass or fail. But this year they didn't give us any report. Only one teenager as a trainer and based on her evaluation he decided who passed or failed. That's very disappointing!! Certainly from next session I am going to admit my kid somewhere else. So be aware before you put your kids for swim class at Carpenter center. 4th level class there were 9 kids with only 2 instructors in one lane. read more

Ok. So, I just got back from Carpenter Rec and I have to say it was undoubtedly one of the worst experiences I've ever had playing pickup ball. I should clarify this by stating that I play in NYC regularly, I've played in LA, SF, Seattle, NC, and at other places in the Middle East and Asia. Carpenter Rec was the worst. Generally, when playing ball, even if you don't speak the same language as the other people around you, you can figure out how things work, get in a few games, queue up to play next, etc. I was at Carpenter Rec for 2.5 hours and was able to play one game of 4 vs 4 due to a combination of strange, useless, and manipulated rules used to exclude who would play in games. I got there with my FIL, warmed up, and shot around for a bit. After the FIL left to do his workout, I talked to some guys and they said that we need to sign up on these lists hanging up on the walls in order to play in a 4 v 4 game. So, we sign up and, after waiting a couple games, get to play a game. I am pretty good. I'm tall, strong, play D, and I can shoot. As the game starts, the guy I'm defending on the other team tells me that my teammates are not going to play D or play hard at all. I'm like whatever, this is just what happens sometimes. When we get the ball, I sink a 3 and on the next defensive possession, I steal the ball from one of the dudes on the other team. Turns out that the guy on the other team was right and 2 of my teammates didn't play D or hustle at all. End of the game, the score was 15 to 3. We lost, but again, whatever. This happens. So, I sign up on the list again. Looks like I'll be waiting a game to play which is normal. I'll be playing on a team with the 3 names above mine. After the game I'm waiting through ends, some guy comes up and says that people have been using the lists wrong and that on the weekends they only use one list. So, everyone on the list that I signed up on needs to be moved to the other list and, on top of that will need to wait for the people who have signed up on the other list to play before they can play. I'm a little pissed because we've been using both lists up til this point and, while I find this whole list system really really stupid, you typically just go with the flow for whatever court you're on when you're unfamiliar with the setting. So, these guys take about 20 minutes to figure out how they're going to move the names around because some guys have their names on both lists and other bullshit. Anyways, after they move everything around, the guys that I had signed up to play with on the wrong list were playing and had just picked up some dude whose name wasn't on either list. WTF?! My name hadn't been moved to what supposedly was the "correct" list and if I wanted to play I'd need to sign up again on this correct list and wait 4 flipping games before I could get on the court again. To sum it up, this place is incredibly unorganized (or maybe misorganized? or maybe they were just trying to exclude the guy they didn't know?). I don't know but I've never wasted so much time dealing with unnecessary BS on a basketball court. To top it off, the courts aren't even that nice, it's slick concrete and the side hoops haven't been spaced well, so people who are warming up are constantly running onto the courts where people are playing games to grab rebounds. They need to get rid of this list system and run games the way that they're run most every other place in the world. TLDR; WTF Plano, get your shit together. read more

I have been comming to this rec center for Iyengar Yoga class and have truely enjoyed the class. The instrutor is very sincere and an excellent teacher. The class has been a Life saver with my severe arthritis. However, I was told recently that the rec center had decided to discontinue the class as the instructor asked for clean room (Not an unreasonable request with us lying down on yoga mats). Many students have reached out to the staff and escalated to continue the class, but all we get back is some flimsy excuse on how the props occupy space etc. I am very disappointed with the management response to all of us inspite of the 2 classes being full all the time. read more

The facility is great and very clean. There are 2 basketball court and a game room. They have may racquetball rooms and a track upstairs. They do not have a pool and the counter does not give you change! I recommend Tom muehlenback center. It is even better and is relatively close to carpenter! read more

I've lived in Plano all my life! Thought we would try the new Carpenter pool! Got here with three girls. They want my DL!!? We go to Plano public swimming pools all summer, every summer and I never needed my DL! So my bad, I left the house without and had to go back to get. 30 min later we are back at pool. Ok...you have 3 girls swimming. I'm not swimming. I'm in shorts and tennis shoes. But wait I have to pay an adult price ticket just to bring three girls!! What the heck. Girls already upset that they missed 30 min of swim time so whatever I paid. I get in here and there is no where for parents to sit. I had to pay for an adult ticket to bring my girls so I could sit on s hard very uncomfortable window ledge. The chlorine in here is horrible. My eyes are burning. Music so loud it's distored. It's hot in here. No where for parents to sit. Really I had to pay when I'm clearly not swimming. All I can do is write a review about it!! After today I'm not coming back. read more

I am very happy with this rec center. It is clean and there are a lot of things to do with a lot of room. (4 basketball courts, 8 racketball/volleyball courts, indoor track, classrooms, weight room area, cardio equipment, outdoor soccer courts etc.) The only negative I can note is that the lockers sometimes don't work, but overall I am happy with this place. read more
