Eventually, I had to install a pellet stove to warm our house in winter because it wasn't doing the job. Then leaks in coils began to occur. Enormous electric bills followed. This year February, replaced the coil. May, the compressor got replaced. Now a fan motor doesn't work. $5616 already spent this year, these guys won't even consider a discount for the motor. They want another grand. Unit won't work at all without motor. Apparently they expect a new unit purchased every 10 to 15 years at 20 to 30k. Beware, geothermal is a scam. The cost and constant care of the unit is not saving money.

The guys that Peterman sent were knowledgeable, clean, efficient, and they replaced most of the parts that typically fail in 20+ years of service although only one part was actually defective. I called one HVAC company up, and and the guy they sent out said that I should get a new furnace. I also called another HVAC company up for a 2nd opinion, and the guy that they sent was a little older, and said that he had seen this before: the seal between the inducer motor and the inducer fan had gotten dried out over the last 14 years, which is understandable. So, he put a few drops of oil on it, and it stopped the noise, and hasn't been a problem 3 days ever since. I'll probably have him come back and replace the seal entirely, but there is no hurry to do so now. According to him, replacing the seal can be an issue because you may need to replace parts when taking the the inducer fan apart, and depending upon how hard it is to get the fan blade off the shaft. But it is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new furnace.
