    Just blue into town

I didn't think that such a touristy place could be this good, but they rouse to the occasion. One of the best food items in Canada, an absolutely must try when in Toronto, especially for bacon lovers, but even for me, who thinks European bacon is magnificent, and American bacon is absolute trash, this Peameal Bacon sandwich is absolutely wonderful. Let's get the bad stuff out of the way. It's not cheap, they close early, parking is tricky around here, and their attitudes are absolutely awful. Some of the employees here (most of them?) have such disdain for the customers that you wonder if they're in the wrong business. Having said all of that, I love thick European style bacon, and these Peameal Bacon sandwiches are salty and delicious and served on wonderful bread, an age-old tradition that makes it worth getting treated like sh** by some random bakers and kids, in order to try what has to be one of Canada's most famous tourist food items, but also easily one of Toronto's very best sandwiches, and comfortably inside the top 20 food items I'd send you to eat when in this amazing city full of perfect food. Whether you're a demure, sweet little thing, or an evil dominatrix like Barbi, or a lethal MMA girl like Ronda Ca-Rousey-el, for whom this bakery is named, you are going to love this Peameal Bacon sandwich. And if you need to pee afterwards, there are bathrooms in the area, so don't make a... meal... out of it. So in conclusion, I'm not too interested in whatever you're selling, but oh, how I love what the Carou.... Sell. (hides)

So besides the owner threaten to punch me in the mouth...whatever.. This place is amazing...try the pea meal bacon on their classic bun with honey mustard...it is really good. Fantastic egg custard tarts. They do rip you off if you pay in US dollars and they do not take any form of electronic payment of card.....thus the one less star.

Peameal bacon is apparently a Toronto specialty so we gave it a try at this stand in St. Lawrence Market. The bacon, which is basically thick cut ham, was nothing out of the ordinary and tasted like something I could get at my local NYC grocery store. I enjoyed the very soft bread though. If you can, opt for more honey mustard since that saved the sandwich from being completely boring. Service wasn't as bad as other reviews claim it to be.

A peameal bacon sandwich is something to try that's unique to Canada, but it's nothing to rave about. It's pretty much thick ham with a cornmeal covering with maple mustard (?) for our sauce choice. The ham (or rather bacon as it's called) was thick but didn't have any special characteristics. The bread itself wasn't anything special. It didn't even taste like it was made fresh. The maple mustard flavoring was there, but it wasn't distinctive. Overall a meh sandwich. The folks working here donned unhappy faces like we were disrupting their flow of non-existent customer line. Though this is the original location, like anything I'm sure you can find it better elsewhere.

So much talk over such a disappointing sandwich... it was rather dry, the rest of the food looked fresh. However the staff was quite rude. It's also a cash only location... the do take USD, that was a plus. It is a very old stand but well kept so at least it looks relatively nice.

Couldn't leave Toronto without trying the peameal sandwich, which is Canadian bacon on a soft bun topped with honey mustard. I really loved the freshly made bun. They also sell a variety of homemade breads and pastries even pastel de natas. They were delicious just as good as the ones I had in Portugal. Staff was very friendly. The bakery is located inside of the St Lawrence Market.

Another fave go to place when I'm in St. Lawrence Market is Carousel Bakery. I know a lot of people prefer Uno Mustachio's Veal Parmigiana but I love Carousel's amazing Italian Veal Parmigiana sandwich. Aside from being cheaper (than Uno's), the sandwich is loaded with the right amount of meat sauce and toppings. It starts with a soft ciabatta bread and nestled inside is a sliced veal cutlet, breaded and crispy loaded with rich tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese. One bite and your mouth is hit all at once with a sweet, savoury, umami flavour. I tried their other sandwiches but I think the veal sandwich is the one worth trying. Service albeit unfriendly is fast as they have lots of staff to help you.

A cash only establishment in St. Lawrence Market. I went here as my first meal upon landing in Toronto in the morning after a red eye, and it was fairly popular but not too busy. I got their famous peameal bacon sandwich with honey mustard, and the mustard here is a lot better than the very vinegary ones that you get in the US. The ones here are more mild and a bit sweeter, which is more my vibe, and the peameal bacon is more like slices of ham. The sandwich is mostly okay, no big deal type of thing. But it is simply something you can get to check off the bucket list. After all, it is a fairly affordable sandwich (9.50 CAD total) good for a snack or a light meal.

The last highly recommended place at St Lawrence Market we tried was Carousel. They specialize in peameal bacon sandwiches. We actually made a special trip here on our last day in Toronto. We wanted food for the plane ride home. The sandwich is awesome. The bacon is coated in the meal and then fried on the grill. The bun is fresh and you can have any of a variety of mustards. The sandwiches came out quickly after we ordered at the counter. You can see the busy staff behind assembling the sandwiches. The lady that helped us was super nice. Its cash only, but its nice they take US$ also. We had run out of C$ at this point. I highly recommend you try the peameal bacon sandwiches at Carousel. They are like a local institution.

I went here on a Wednesday around 6:10pm since I wanted to pick up something to eat for when I get back to the hotel. It seems like a lot of tourists goes here since this market where this bakery is located in was still packed! Anyways, I got the Famous Peameal Bacon Sandwich! I heard this place is known for that sandwich, so I knew I had to get it! I didn't end up eating it until I got back to the hotel, so the sandwich was cold by the time I ate it, but it was still good and super flavorful! That was my first time trying Canadian bacon and it had thick slices of Canadian bacon inside the sandwich. It's a nice meal if you're on the go! I'd recommend this place! Yes, the sandwich was super simple, but the sandwich was very flavorful so that's ok. I'll definitely have to try it again when it's hot.

Carousel is top rated for a reason. As a New Yorker, i had to try the peameal bacon, egg & cheese. It was so good. They make the sandwich in front of you while you wait so everything is fresh. The breakfast sandwich (~$6) is cheaper than the peameal sándwich -- i think because it had less meat. Cash only, so make sure to stop by an ATM.

While showing my friend around the city, I recommended we try the famous Carousel Bakery. Very good sandwiches and reasonably priced. Carousel is known for the pemeal bacon sandwiches but I was in the mood for something different. I took a recommendation from the employee and tried the chicken sourdough sandwich. I'm really glad I did. The chicken was very tasty and came with lettuce and tomato. The bread was amazing and the portion was large. I always pay cash there but I think they might take cards. I'm not sure. We were lucky to score a spot on a picnic bench outside to dig into our sandwiches

I agree that the price for a sandwich plus side salad is quite pricey ($13 including tax) but I like the fact that everything tastes fresh and light, and you have alot of options to customize your sandwich in a healthy way. I ordered the rosemary focaccia with chicken breast, arugula, avocado and chipotle spread plus their usual sprinkle of salt, pepper and squeeze of lime. It's like a gourmet sandwich - the bread was thick, soft with hints of rosemary and yummy. The salad was mostly arugula with carrots- this was very lightly seasoned but at least I won't be hit with itis going back to work! I'm going to continue with my overtime take out review series with Sandwich Box. You would think making a sandwich is probably not the most complicated task out there, but this place seems to get it all wrong. My order consisted of an egg salad sandwich on whole grain bread with a side salad. When I received it, I only got the sandwich and the restaurant failed to tell me the salad was no longer included in the combo (yet the price remained the same). That's great that the online menu was not updated to include items no longer available, a simple update would address all these problems knowmsayin? Now on to the actual sandwich, the bread was thick. I mean so thick it looked like there was about a half an inch of eggs inside of two encyclopedias worth of bread. The eggs themselves, totally flavorless and bland. Kinda hard to mess up an egg salad sandwich right? Even Tim Horton's can get that right! To make things short and sweet, I'll be looking over this option the next time I'm working late or considering a sandwich in the downtown area.
