He gave me an excruciatingly painful injection. I asked if he would use numbing spray. He did HOWEVER he sprayed and injected at the same time without giving the spray to numb the area. WELL, after 2 days my toe was still inflamed. I made an appointment with a foot specialist at OrthoCarolina. My toe was infected and now I'm in a boot and taking an antibiotic for 10 days. I also want to mention when originally went in he didn't out on gloves and just picked up the scalpel from the countertop. I'm not sure it had been sterilized! DONT GO THERE.

Check-in was a breeze, even for someone like me who is a new patient. Dr. Garten's nurses were also very sharp. Dr. Garten herself was a pleasure. She made me feel right at home, listened to my concerns, offered candid thoughts, and didn't hesitate to get me x rays and a brace. Her style was casual but very thorough and precise. It felt like I was being looked at by an old friend as opposed to a complete stranger. I was sent home with exercises for my ankle, a brace, medicine for swelling and even a copy of my x rays. I'm now confident that if I follow the steps Dr. Garten outlined for me, that I will be good to go in a few short weeks. Dr. Garten was a huge help and every step of the experience was wonderful! So I went in for an 815a appointment on Monday, MLK Day. I completed all the forms in advance on their website so the check-in at the Kiosk when you enter was was smooth. It was very busy for that early on a Monday morning. But I was called back within about 10 minutes. I met with an assistant, who asked a lot of questions, she left and came back in about 5 minutes and said they needed X-Rays. Another 5 minutes and I was in and out of X-Ray. In another 5 minutes Kevin McCullough, PA came in and asked a few more questions, we talked about the X-Rays and his diagnosis. Some long worded medical term but he said it's called 'trigger finger'. He said the repetitive use of my right hand gripping the club contributed to it, plus my age plus a chronic medical condition I have. He gave me a steroid injection and said that should resolve it. If after about a week or two, if it continues to give a call and it may mean out-patient surgery. When you get of a 'certain age' these things become typical so I'm not surprised. The good news, OrthoCarolina is a top tier medical provider. Their process and their people make things like this smooth and easy. I was in and out in about 30 minutes and had the info I needed: diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. I felt real good about everything.

The doctor and nurse were fantastic as usual. The problem I had was with the person who deals with insurance. The doctor has done everything he can to help me to get my insurance to cover medication he has prescribed. Obviously he has determined that I need this medication. My insurance requires prior authorization. Nothing new with that but the criteria I have to meet for them to cover the medication has been an issue. The doctor had put everything in his notes that will help me meet these criteria. He had me speak with their insurance person and she was beyond unhelpful. She said she was confused about the situation. This is her job. If she's confused as to what to do imagine how I feel. I thought I somewhat understood the insurance process but after speaking with her I am more confused than ever. I left the office so frustrated that I was almost in tears.
