Carmel Surf lessons was a pretty good first time experience for my family. Unfortunately, the conditions were not the best today. There was only one instructor for 5 students which made getting lots of instruction somewhat challenging and one of the students kept drifting down the beach. All in all a good first time. My wife Michelle and I booked a group lesson through Carmel Surf Lessons. We were on a lesson with one other person (who also had an amazing time, so much so that it was her second day in a row taking lessons!). Michelle was extremely nervous, and didn't think she would be able to stand up, let alone catch a wave. We both had never surfed in the ocean before. Location Although their Yelp shows up in Monterey, we met and surfed at Carmel beach, which was perfect for us. Nice water, beautiful scenery and we were staying nearby anyways. Scheduling If you are scheduling way in advance, their website scheduling is probably the way to go, but I really liked that you could text Noah to schedule as well. He was super responsive and accommodating. Crowded? No way! We took a class on Memorial Day weekend, and there were only a few other surfers within 100yards of us. We never felt like we were in anyone's way or we're in jeopardy of colliding with anyone. Our Instructor Noah's passion for teaching is unmatched. He wants so badly for you to have a good time and feel successful. He will work with you based on your ability level, and put you in position to catch waves. He was giving constructive feedback after every fall or struggle. Super encouraging too. You will not find a better teacher to guide you through the intimidating process of learning to surf. The Gear Boards were super nice, perfect to learn on. The water was pretty cold, but with the quality wetsuits they supply, I couldn't even feel the cold! The Results! Me and my wife both got up and caught waves consistently, although my wife got the nickname "Smooth" cause she made it look easy! Noah Rocks! He is an all-star surf instructor! Very down to earth, patient and all around fun! The Gaalswyk boys had their first ever surf lesson this morning. Noah made them feel right at home in the water. Seth (9yrs old) was not sure about going out into the water. Noah made him feel safe and secure. He was absolutely wonderful with Seth. Henk Sr and Henk Jr had the time of their lives. It was a great bonding time for the boys while mom took a ton of pictures and video. Recently, I planned a corporate offsite meeting and our team-building activity was having Noah and his crew give us surf lessons. What an amazing experience!! We were a group of 17 and everyone had a blast! Noah was totally prepared with wetsuits and the right amount of instructors, and they showed us a great time. Noah and his associates were absolutely fantastic! Booked surf lessons for 3 first time teenagers ranging from age 13 to 19. We joined a group of others at the appointed time and place and waited a couple of minutes for Noah to arrive. Noah pulls up in a delivery truck full of all the required provisions. After introductions, all the kids are quickly outfitted with wet suits and we are walking to the beach with boards in tow. My daughter started the day with a headache and took a few breaks early, Noah was very patient and encouraging, she ended up having a great time with her cousins and other students. Fantastic Day! I don't think i'll ever repeat such a great lesson. I'm going to try being repetitive but i'll repeat everyone else's sentiments, NOAH IS AWESOME. I've had a lot of surf lessons and this one was by far the best. 1) Noah is easy to communicate with. Email worked really well. We picked a time and place and there he was. He was flexible as to when and met me about ten minutes from where i was staying. 2) He picked a perfect beach. Waves were the right size for various levels, which was good for me as I'm not quite a beginner but still timid. 3) He set me up w a perfect board and brand new wet suit for the lesson. Rattled off some important surf bro knowledge and we were off. 4) He dealt w my (lack of) confidence and hesitations extremely well. He was encouraging and always positive and he got me turning by the end of the lesson, which is sweet to take back to New England. My 6-year-old son took a two-hour private lesson at Carmel Beach yesterday and it was just amazing! He was nervous and kept running out of the water, but our instructor was so incredibly patient and engaged him with rock collecting, sand castle building, water play, and tide pool exploration until suddenly my son was completely confident to try surfing! Our instructor Kelly stayed with my son the entire time, and after each wave he "surfed," my son came running to me with joy beaming across his face, looking so thrilled that it filled me with happiness. After a quick high five and telling me, "Mom! I did it! I stood up!" he ran back to Kelly to try again. The only time he got upset was when it was time to leave. He calmed down after making me promise to get him another lesson soon. I watched the entire time and was very relieved to see Kelly had my son under control and safe every moment. We left the beach glowing from the fresh air, ocean, and the amazing experience my son had. It truly was the best day we've had in a long time. read more

I had heard of noah through a friend and decided to take my brother (40) and his two sons (12 and 10) for surfing lessons. We met Noah at the the parking lot he gave us everything we needed. Last minute my son (7) wanted to try it so Noah adapted and gave him a wetsuit and we headed down to the beach. Great instruction for the adults big kids and my little one on the beach. We then got into the water and got lots of practice on great waves for learning. Lots of help getting into the waves and advice on how to improve each wave. Every single person got up on a wave in the first few minutes. . Noah was absolutely amazing with my 7 year old son. He got him into the cold water, helped him onto each wave and then let him ride to the beach on his own. My wife and I were completely shocked and amazed. A highlight of the day was Noah getting my son and I to ride a wave together. This was an experience that I will remember forever. Having so much fun myself while watching my son proudly. Overall and amazing day. The adults and kids had a blast. Noah and Will were great fun. I would absolutely hands down recommend these guys. We are all already thinking about the next time. read more

I've never taken surfing lessons before (I was mostly taught by friends and family), but this was a very nice experience! I went in a group of 7 and each and every one of us was taken care of. They provided a good foam board for each person in the group to use. Before we got out on the water, the instructor taught us proper placement on the board when trying to catch a wave, as well as how to pop up on the board best. After getting out on the water, he sat with each of us and when a wave came up, he had us lay on the board and pushed us with the wave so that we could catch it. Not a single one of us missed our first wave! This was definitely a worthwhile venture and I would totally recommend it for anyone looking to learn (or in my case, re-learn) how to surf! read more

I can't say enough good things about Noah and the way he handled our lessons. My wife and I called him saturday afternoon to set up a group lesson the next morning. He accommodated for our schedule and met us at Asilomar beach. The waves were a little high so he told us it may be difficult but that we should try anyway. I got stuck in the kelp while paddling out and he swam back to shore to help me get out of it. I loved the waves there but the wife got a litte freaked out. Noah gave me some time to talk to her and calm her down. I couldn't get her to go back in so he came over and talked her into going to Monterey beach where the waves are more mild. He worked magic on her and we were off driving across town in our wetsuits. he spent an extra hour with us and went far out of his way to give us a great experience. Again, I can;t say enough good things about the guy and the experience he gave us. we ended up with a couples class and he charged us a group rate which was much better. Oh my, Noah of Carmel Surf Lesson is the beginning surfer's best friend! On my annual pilgrimage to the Monterey Peninsula, a.k.a. the family vacation, the only thing my three kids wanted to do was get back in the water with their old buddy, Noah. After calling ahead and making reservations, then texting the kid's height and weight, Noah met the group at Carmel Beach's 13th street - with a quiver of brand-new soft longboard and custom fitting wetsuits. The surf was small (thank goodness) and close to the beach, which offered a certain sense of security for my southern Utah offspring. After nearly 2 hours of personal instruction and encouragement, my kids were paddling into their own waves effortlessly. Great time with Noah learning some first ever surf moves and actually riding waves within an hour! We're on a roadtrip, just passing by Carmel/Monterey. Noah helped set up a lesson the very next day, brought everything needed incl. wetsuit and board. Then after maybe 10 minutes of some of the basics we went into the water and maybe 10 minutes later I'm up on the board for the very first time. Clearly veterans of surfing, they help with catching the wave, timing and encouragement to stand up and ride the wave.
