DO NOT PURCHASE FROM CARMAX. CARMAX sold me a piece of junk. I purchased a '21 Ram pickup in August 2024. By February of '25, I had to have my cam heads and lifters replaced. In May of '25 my entire engine had to be replaced. I then had to have my radio replaced December of '25. CARMAX was not willing to make this situation right. I had a vehicle shipped to my nearest CarMax location with the intention of purchasing it upon my return from being stationed overseas for a year. Time was incredibly limited as I had to report to my next base shortly after arriving stateside. I stayed in constant communication with CarMax, and they had clear notes in their system to hold the vehicle for a few days until I could finalize the purchase. Despite weeks of planning and coordination from overseas with banks, insurance companies and CarMax, I received a call on the day of the sale from the sales representative at CarMax informing me that the vehicle had been sold or shipped to another location. This was a vehicle I had carefully selected, and CarMax was fully aware of my situation and timeline. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I relied on CarMax to honor their commitment, and they completely failed me during an already stressful and time-sensitive period. This experience has been an absolute letdown, and I will never recommend or purchase from CarMax again. For a company that prides itself on customer service and transparency, they dropped the ball in the worst way possible. My husband bought a car from here about 7 years ago and my husband enjoyed his experience. With that said.... 7 years passed, our family has grown, and we needed to upgrade our vehicle. I was not thrilled with the first customer rep we had when we first went in so we didn't get far on our first initial purchase. We went in as a walk in to test drive a car again and the sales rep tried to pawn us back off to the original guy we had and I had to flat out told him no we want a new sales associate to help us. Finally, when we went in the 3rd time we got someone great who wanted to help us as a walk in and was super nice. With that said, we finally chose the car we wanted. We worked with the sales rep and he made time for us to come in and buy the car on a Monday. When we purchased the car on a Monday, we didn't even go look at it, we knew we wanted it so the sales rep made sure to get it all ready. The super disappointing thing in all this was after we purchased the car and did the 2 hours of paperwork, I found damage on the passenger side of the car. I should have un-did the whole sale at that very moment. My mistake... I also learned, ALWAYS look at the car one final time the day you buy it. NOBODY was going to tell us of the damage, just let us walk out with it on the vehicle. With that said, CARMAX agreed to fix it, which they did a poor job at it. So we had to go back twice to get the paint job damage fixed on a car for our family. Super frustrating. The next annoying part in all this was they knew the first time they didn't fix it to the promise standard and each time I had a car rental from them, the car rentals were terrible. Each time they offered me a vehicle smaller and of much lower quality then what I had purchased. Finally I told them, at least give me something larger, I don't care if its nicer and newer I just need something mid size or larger. Getting around in a small car with a larger family was exactly why I was here in the first place upgrading my Honda Civic. With this all said, I paid a lot of money for a nice car, and there were about 7 days in there I didn't get to own the vehicle in my garage that I was stuck paying insurance and taxes on. Management didn't do a good job making sure I was 100% satisfied. Even after the paint job was fixed, there was some dissatisfaction in the quality but I wasn't going to complain again. The bumper on the door was not put back on as smooth as it was originally, but again whatever. I couldn't find another car exactly like this car at the price with the inflation of car prices. My sales rep was great, my customer service by the rest of CARMAX was not. I learned a lot in my experience on what I will do and not do next time if I have to go through another situation like this. Oh one last detail... when I went to pay for the vehicle I called CARMAX asking what were my options to pay for a vehicle and they said anyway I want to. Use a Credit Card, Check, Cashiers Check, Loan Check, etc... I was thrilled, cause I was thinking I could just pay by Credit Card, get the points, and then turn around and pay it off. Not true, their customer service rep was wrong. You can pay by check / cashiers check / loan. Credit Card payment is NOT an option ever. Wish I knew that prior to showing up and luckily I brought a check book with me, which never leaves the house to begin with because I have no reason to ever really write a check. Oh yea and if you do a trade in, expect that that your car is GONE and everything in it is GONE! Though you have 7 days to return the car you do have, the car you gave them is GONE GONE GONE. I was ok with that but I lost a beloved home made CD I had truly loved because they had already shipped my car off to another location. Again I was not to upset with that, I should have checked inside my CD holder for if anything was in there, but 7 years of that 1 cd in that car, I never removed it before so it didn't cross my mind to remove it then. I was having difficulty finding a car online that fit my needs. But when I checked CarMax's website I found the perfect car immediately. It happened to be a 2023 Cadillac CT4, with only 1450 miles on it. So I was buying a new used car. When I went to CarMax Wichita the agent working with me was Andrew. He was very friendly and patient. He made sure I understood what buying a car from CarMax entailed. He patiently walked me through the buying process and took care to show me the features on my new Cadillac CT4. CarMax totally took the hassle out of transferring my plates and getting it registered. Entered their large office and although there were no less than 6 sales people sitting around socializing, not one asked if they could help me with any questions. I purchased a vehicle less than 30 days from CarMax in Wichita. I brought the car to a certified Toyota Dealership to get the car inspected as a 3rd party double-check. The dealership told me that my tires need to be replaced soon and measured at 4/32nds. I contacted CarMax about the situation. They verified the measurement with the shop and said 4/32nds meets their minimum safety requirement for tires. It's ridiculous that a car dealership would expect customers to purchase new tires on a vehicle they just bought. I understand the chip shortage is putting a squeeze on the car industry, but take your business elsewhere if you can. CarMax is taking advantage of the market and producing minimum standards. I've purchased three previous vehicles from Carmax. Never again. read more

BEWARE, lots of FAKE REVIEWS for Carmax! Be prepared to pay literally thousands more for an "easy" car buying experience. Wasted time being shown cars from around the country until one that seemed to be suspiciously priced below market peaked my interest. But... not surprisingly they wanted to make up the difference by offering 4 THOUSAND below WHOLESALE BOOK value for the trade. The "professional buyer" (who uses no judgement and just punches info into a PDA like it's 1998) was contrite and acted like they were doing a favor for trading a 2 year old car in good condition. Left feeling gross and taken advantage of, had to take a silkwood shower to get the contamination off. No different than any other car dealership so go somewhere local owned where you can at least get ripped off by someone who's kid plays soccer with yours instead of getting ripped off by another mega corporation who could care less about you, their employees, the future of America and so on! read more

Wont call you every other day, and are really interested in getting you into the car that is right for you. Probably the best thing that I think about them is that they can transfer you a car from anywhere in the country. You can basically pick any car in any color and in any options, unlike other dealers where you have to settle on those things cause they dont have one on the lot. Granted, there is a fee to transfer, but myself am willing to pay a few hundred extra to get EXACTLY what I want. Didn't get my last couple cars there because my best friend worked at another dealership, but Carmax would be my first choice after supporting a good friend. read more

I have a Nissan Quest that I have only taken to Carmax for oil changes since I purchased from here. Today's oil change was $10 more than the last service and when they brought it out from the car wash (which it looked rinsed not washed) my personalized tag in front was bent outwards. I went back in to let the service person know and she came out to look and proceeded to push it back with her foot. She then stated that their car wash repeatedly damages the front tags if not completely rips them off! Wow! Very disappointed in their lack of responsibility. Bought my first car here, it was overall a satisfactory experience! It was a very easy process & I was not pressured into buying any fluff warranties. Only downside is because I had a car shipped to my location, I did feel pressured into only test driving & buying that car. That, most likely, has more to do with me as a person and the route I took. I have bought three different cars/truck from Carmax in Wichita, Ks. I have been pleased with the experiences I have had with them. The car I just purchased, 2017 camaro, I spent the same amount as I would a brand new car but got all the options/color I wanted. The negative on that experience was the car was not detailed, more like ran through a $2 car wash. Bugs all on the front of the vehicle. For $40000 on a car I'd expect better.
