I'm sharing this experience so other customers are aware of what occurred and can make an informed decision about who they feel comfortable working with at this location. I have also reported the incident directly to CarMax Customer Relations so CarMax has the opportunity to review and address it appropriately. The employee involved was identified to us by another CarMax employee as Sophia. I had an extremely upsetting experience with an employee who another CarMax employee identified to us as Sophia. My father's first language is not English, he has a noticeable accent, and he has difficulty clearly enunciating some words because of a previous stroke. While he was trying to communicate with Sophia, I repeatedly observed her smiling and grinning in a way that appeared mocking and condescending, as though she was suppressing laughter while he spoke. I did not hear her explicitly say anything about his accent or ethnicity, but the timing and repeated nature of her reactions were extremely upsetting. Later, my father simply asked for another copy of the receipt for our down payment. Sophia said it appeared we had already received one. When I questioned why another copy couldn't be provided, she became argumentative with me. I acknowledge I was frustrated, but I specifically told her I wanted to END the conversation with her and asked for a manager. Instead of getting one, she continued arguing with me even after I repeatedly said I no longer wanted to speak with her. Another employee eventually stepped in, and when we asked him for a manager, he immediately got one. Even while I was explaining the situation to the manager, Sophia remained nearby looking toward me, grinning, pursing/pouting her lips, and raising her eyebrows in a way I perceived as mocking. The manager, thankfully, was professional, understanding, and handled my complaint appropriately. He told me he would speak with the employee because the behavior was not acceptable. We were there purchasing a vehicle and trading in another one. Regardless of the issue we encountered with our trade-in, no customer should be made to feel mocked or belittled while struggling to communicate, and a request to stop an argument and speak with a manager should be respected. I have formally reported this incident to CarMax Customer Relations and requested that the surveillance footage from that evening be preserved and reviewed. read more

Don't sell your car at this Carmax. I got a fair quote, went back two months later and was planning to sell the car which they were aware of. When they refreshed the price they dropped it by 30%! Crazy as it was the same exact car just with 1,000 more miles. They dropped it because they knew I was going to sell it. I asked for a manager and wasn't allowed to speak to anyone else. I went to Carvana in San Antonio and they gave me more than the original carmax quote. So quick and easy and fair. Carmax in SA is a scam' read more

This review comes after his attempt to belittle my family. He asked several times . Sells cars without checking tires / rear brakes / has no clue about service history. Never calls back. Rarely get a human on the phone. Sit for hours /multiple visits waiting on BS diagnostics test. Too cheap to replace 13 yo tires/sensors before selling. Came by to get a vehicle estimate as a family member had been here last year. 2 attendants in the check-in area were friendly & wary greeted us. Told us to take a seat & someone would be with us within 5 minutes. Josh with a baseball cap, immediately asked our names, vehicle info, ph#, etc. I said "Hi" to him since he had no salutation, just wanted to get started. He said "Hi" back & immediately input our info. He asked for the keys & had us wait in the waiting area. I would say it took about 15 minutes for the eval & for us to come back to discuss the estimate/offer. I thought it was undervalued as I've been getting emails from Carfax almost monthly. I had even gotten my car washed but I guess they have some formula. Josh mentioned something having to do with tariffs being a factor but I didn't see the correlation since it isn't even a new car that needs to be shipped?? Anyhoo, they must have some formula. There were only maybe 3 other families there so it wasn't crowded. There were lots of cars in the lot, though. Once the vehicle is evaluated as they drive it off the parking spot, they drop it off in a designated "Express Pickup" spot. The location is right off I-10/Medical Center so hopping on I-10 onto 410 was convenient. read more

We waited for 30 minutes for a scheduled appointment. We missed the call to let us know a person was now available. We immediately notified Jennifer that we were still on the lot. She said she had already moved on and there were about 6 employees sitting or milling about, all of whom were not available to help. Completely unacceptable. We left there and went to Cavendar Toyota where they were more than accommodating. read more

My husband and I have been searching for a car for our daughter. We were assisted by Jaxson. He was helpful, and communicated daily. We had agreed to meet on Aug 5 to finalize a sale on one of the vehicles Jaxson showed us. On Aug 4, my husband and I dropped by CarMax on Fountainhead Dr in San Antonio, Tx to show him an additional vehicle Jaxson has shown my daughter and me. No one there could find either of the 2 vehicles that Jaxson had shown us. I called Jaxson and he replied immediately (he was off Aug 4) saying that both cars were there on the lot and could not understand why we were being informed that vehicle(s) we were interested in were not there. Jaxson and I agreed and confirmed to meet on Aug 5. When I got off phone with Jaxson, my husband and I continued looking at vehicles, we saw a volkswagon Tiguan than we liked. Javier T. asked us if he could help us, he showed us the Tiguan. We liked it. He encouraged us to make a deposit to hold the vehicle, and would call my husband and me when the title of the vehicle would arrive. We shared that we were approved by a bank and would be financing with the bank. Javier wrote down the bank info that would be enough to hold the Tiguan. He told us not to worry about any other salesman that he would get the Tiguan for us once the title arrived and call us to finalize the purchase. We waited and waited for his call. On Aug 10 at 11 am I called Javier T. Javier T. tells us that the Tiguan was reserved for someone else and that he was informed late Saturday night on Aug 8 that the Tiguan is not for sale. Javier T. made no effort to contact us on Saturday night, or Monday morning. Had I not called, I would've still been waiting for his call. I should have stayed with Jaxson, he at least communicated with us. read more

This review is for selling a vehicle. We came in around 1:30pm to sell a vehicle. We waited 15 minutes for an appraisal then another 40 minutes while it got appraised. Once it was appraised, we had to empty our vehicle, bring the vehicle to the service side and turn in the appraised form to the business office. It took an hour for the business office to process everything. You'll turn in the title, give your IDs for them to copy and the keys. Once the business office is ready, they make you sign the sales agreement. Then they make you sign the title, they also made us sign a POA for the title since our title is from Hawaii. 10 minutes later, we were given copies of everything we signed and a check for the full amount from the appraisal. The whole process took 3.5 hours and was minimal stress. Staff was friendly despite being a busy Saturday. Wonderful sell experience! read more

I came in about two weeks ago after my car had been stolen, just hoping to find a new one. I was greeted by Colin, and he was incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful from the start. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly, which really eased my nerves, as this was my first big purchase! Colin gave me great insight into each car we looked at and made the entire process simple and stress-free. Honestly, I'd buy a car from him again and again. Even if he ever leaves CarMax, I'll be following him to wherever he goes! If you're feeling nervous about buying a car, Colin is the guy you want to work with. Overall, the entire CarMax process was fantastic. I highly recommend both CarMax and Colin! Oh and I LOVEEE my Lexus!! read more

Hello! On December 26th, 2024 I bought from Carmax San Antonio (Fountainhead Dr.) a RAM 1500 made in 2015 for $24,850. Not even two months passed and the car broke on February 18th. I wasn't able to start it. The car was towed to the Carmax facility and kept there for 11 days. They were going to repair it because it still had the Carmax 3 month warranty. Being a commercial car, my company has lost a lot of money because I wasn't able to work with it for 11 days. Carmax agents told me that Carmax does not take any responsibility for that. In these 11 days the communication from Carmax was very poor. Unreplied e-mails, unanswered phone calls, they promised to call back on the same day but called the next day after I have reached to them again. It was always me who had to reach out to them. They took the car to a third party repair shop. I had to call the shop myself to find out updates about the car. Carmax agents told me: "We weren't able to get a hold of them." I called the repair shop and in 2 minutes they gave me all the updates. I've decided to sell the car back to Carmax and they gave me an appraisal for $17,000. That is almost $8,000 less than what I paid for not even 2 months earlier. I have put into the car only 2,000 miles. The last drop was when I realized that the 11 month warranty they gave me for the repairs does not apply for commercial vehicles. So, basically I'm left out with nothing. I would have been open to buying another truck from Carmax had they evaluated my RAM for the price I paid for it. I'm totally disappointed with Carmax and will never recommend them to anyone. read more

During my recent visit, I canceled my Gap insurance for a previous vehicle I had purchased from Carmax. I, recently, traded in my vehicle at a different dealership. I've never documented my Carmax experience, so here it is: My experience with purchasing a vehicle from Carmax was very easy. I found the vehicle online and made the decision that I was going to buy the vehicle. I uploaded the pictures of my trade-in and scheduled a test drive. The entire process was smooth. I was approved by multiple lenders and was given some very good financing options even the option to keep my trade-in and low to no down payment. The gentleman who assisted me was Mr. K. (Kafele Starling). He's a great salesman and very honest. He was available via phone and email, and even assisted with providing options when I was car shopping again. Although, I decided not to purchase my new vehicle from Carmax, it was not due to bad experience because again, I had 0 concerns with my previous purchase. By the way, I previously purchased a Kia Stinger from Carmax and she was perfect! Thanks for a great experience. On to the new... bye bye Stinger. Currently, I own a 2023...and I'm happy about it. Ask for Mr. K. I'm unsure if he still works at Carmax. read more

Fair appraisal that exceeded what the local dealers offered. The process was simple and transparent.

We have bought 5 cars from CarMax and have great experiences every time. We love the no pressure, price is what it is, large inventory and efficient processes. Went into this Carmax to see if they had a particular Enclave in stock. Lisa looked it up and told me they don't know when vehicles will become available but that she would place a HOLD on it for me to come and look at when it did become available. She sent me a text on July 20th asking if I was still interested in the that particular vehicle. I told her I was interested in the vehicle. So Sunday July 25th rolls around and I received an email stating that the vehicle was ready from me to look at and that there was a hold on it for me. I followed the prompts of the email verfiying my interest. This morning I called the Carmax where this vehicle is located and the run around begins with Christine. Apparently there was a hold placed on this vehicle by someone else not that long ago---- so even I had a hold on it first they're now just going to dishonor my hold and basically sell the car to someone else. There is no buyers advantage with placing holds on vehicles that are not ready. Don't waste your time or hold your breath. It's a joke. The evidence is in these texts below. read more

If you had a severe wreck on any vehicle CarMax of all 4 dealers I got an appraisal on was my best sale option. The only reason I did not purchase from CarMax is due to the high interest rate and required down payment with 14k negative equity going into a vehicle. My FICO credit score is 743 and ended up buying a truck from Universal Toyota, as it was able to to carry my negative equity with a lower down payment and 0% interest. And my insurance rate was better. I'd come to carmax first to weigh that appraisal option prior to going to a dealer. read more

So I loved my experience buying the car and had no issues for a full year. My ac compressor went out and luckily I had purchased the extended warranty. Dropped my car off and picked up a rental for 7 days which I had been told was enough time for my car to be repaired. This is where things get a little mucky with the level of service. Positive- *Provided a loaner vehicle when my rental expired until the repairs were completed *I had a damaged bumper that they further damaged/ broke while getting ready to install the new compressor. They replaced my bumper at no cost to me. * updates were regular Negative- *Received a call the day before I was to pick up and told that the new time frame for my repair was going to be 60 days later as they could not find the part. * the loaner vehicle left me stranded and needed to be jumped. There was no one who could help me as it was a Friday evening. The service department was closed over the weekend so I was without a vehicle for two days. *When I picked up a different loaner I got home and the battery in the key fob died. I sourced and replaced it myself as it had a push start ignition so had no other option. *received a call that the technician reported my battery was bad and that they had to jump start each time to start my car. They offered to replace it (for added cost) I informed that my battery was only six months old and to not replace as I would deal with the manufacturer. I asked if they had checked the alternator to ensure it wasn't the problem. They said they could run the diagnostic for 90.00 After running the diagnostic they stated the alternator was fine but that battery was still an issue. I didn't have it replaced but had no issue starting my car when I picked it up or when I took it to where I purchased the battery (autozone) The retailer ran a second test on the battery and alternator and both were fine. *I found a diagnostic readout from Carmax in my car that said the battery was fine. When I called and asked about it I was told that it was from the alternator test that required a new battery be put in to complete. I asked for the read out that showed my battery was bad as autozone said it was not and I was told that they don't provide that. I pointed out that I had paid 90.00 based on them saying there were issues with my battery and that it didn't seem to be the case and was told " I don't know what to tell you, I was there when the tech ran the test and it read bad" The whole battery situation seems suspicious /dishonest but I'm looking at the silver lining of a new bumper for 90.00 read more

I had been looking for a vehicle for sometime now. I found one right in my price range. The vehicle was transferred from another city in Texas for free. I hate car dealerships. Having said that CarMax is an outstanding car dealership. No pressure sales Knowledgeable salesperson Best return warranty policy I bought a Hyndai Ioniq after I had taken it for a short test drive. I drove the car the next day 140 miles. That's when I discovered I do not fit in the car. My back and hip were killing me. I took it back to CarMax a manager assisted me. I'm thinking the whole time they are going to hassle me for bringing it back. WRONG absolutely stood by their pledge. The manager even asked what they could have done so I didn't want to bring the car back. CarMax is really the only place to buy a car. This place is a waste of time. They have me $20,000 value for selling the car. When I walked in there were barely any customers and they had lot of people working. They told it would be 30 minutes before the appraisal has been done. I asked them can you give me a precise time and she said few more minutes. I went back after an hour asking to return my keys as it was getting delayed. I believe her name is Betty she went out of her office and immediately grabbed the keys which has been ready for a while and they told me there is an issue with the transmission. I asked what is the issue and they said some issue and they would be offering me $13,000. I take my vehicle to the Land Rover showroom for service and I took it last month. They do the inspection on the vehicle and they mentioned everything was good. How come you can't even tell what the issue is and just counter offer for a lower price. My vehicle has 54,000 miles on it. Hence this place is a total waste of time and they come up with the issues which the vehicle doesn't even have. Selling the vehicle privately is better than going into car max. read more

My experience with Carmax was kinda scary. I financed a vehicle with all the bells and whistles, but within 2/3 weeks I noticed I didn't need all the fancy. What I needed was space and room . Where do I even begin? I went in Friday and purchased a 2015 Subaru Outback. My sales representative practically swore up and down the car was vetted to be safe and dependable. I was told the car had been through an inspection with their service department. After spending around 9 and half hours in the dealership we left the lot with the car. Immediately we noticed a squeaky sound before even pulling off the lot. We brought this up and the salesman tried to tell us it was because of a plastic tag and that it had been removed. However, we still heard the noise, he then lied and said the noise would stop after the car "warmed up." Unsurprisingly, it didn't. In fact, 2 days later, on Sunday (car was bought Friday). The check engine light comes on. We go get the car diagnosed and there is a sensor issue with the engine. The same engine CarMax was supposed to have checked. To say I am upset is an understatement. This was supposed to be my first car and now it must be returned. My mother flew down to help me buy this car but now she must extend her stay which as you can imagine is not cheap. This has been extremely inconvenient and I am super disappointed because I had heard that CarMax was a great place to do business but I see otherwise. Oh, and their service department is only open Monday-Friday. So if you have a weekend issue like me, you're out of luck. Think long and hard about purchasing a used vehicle here. However, I would recommend you look elsewhere. read more
