Long story very short, they lowballed us on the car we wanted to sell. Offered $3500. We went to KIA dealership and they ended up giving us more than DOUBLE - $8000. We also had the intention of purchasing a kia telluride. It was $36k for 17k miles. My girlfriend bought her car here earlier this year, but was unable to be scheduled for the 30 warranty covered service due to the ice storm and the after affects of it. She called a couple weeks ago and spoke to somebody named Zee in the Service center. Zee was so kind and helped her get an appointment for her vehicle which we assumed we might need to pay for ($200 out of pocket with our coverage) but he extended her 30 day warranty due to the circumstances which was more than we could ever ask for. They were super helpful and kept us very informed during the entire process. Situated in 100 Oaks area of Nashville, this CarMax is the flagship location of the city. There are a few scattered around the city, but this one is the largest and most centrally located. Including my current vehicle, we have purchased 4 vehicles from CarMax in the past 10 years within our house, and all of our experiences have been mostly positive. My current vehicle, a 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline, has given me the most headaches of all our CarMax purchased vehicles. I can't fill lay blame on this location, as I did have it transferred in to purchase, but I deal solely with them, so here we are. Since processing in late 2023, I have had my Explorer in the CM or Ford shop upwards of 5 times for various things from rattles coming from the front and rear to loose windshield trim. For the initial rattle issue that I noticed less than 60 days from purchase, I was here 3 times, even had ride alongs and videos in effort to solve. I was ultimately referred to a Ford dealership where the initial concern was fixed. My latest issue happened o be a rattling in the rear and turned out to be my exhaust system which needed a full replacement. $2,800 later due to MaxCare not covering and officially being out of Ford warranty due to mileage... Given this situation, I reached out to the LGM at this store and was soon connected with Eric Morrison, Director of Operations for the store. This would have easily been a 1 star review if it wasn't for Eric. He has been wildly helpful, understanding and thankful for my patronage and vowed to make things right. After a few conversations, we landed on a middle ground with what resolution could look like and he has been a man of his word and action. Got a call from CarMax on 1/2/2026 telling me that my car would be ready that day and someone would be in touch with me. Waited until 1/5/2026 because stuff happens, right? Called 5 times before noon to find out anything about my vehicle. No one at the service desk would answer so I tried to Business Office. They took my name and said someone would call me back. No one ever did. I called before 6, and was put on hold until after six at which time I got a recording telling me that the service desk was now closed. I decided to go to CarMax and request a refund. It has now been two full weeks and I still have not received my refund. I am very angry, and will absolutely tell everyone I know to not shop here. If you buy a car from Carmax, you really should have it inspected right off the lot. Regretfully, I did not do this and now after only two years I am spending $4, 367.00 today to replace rusted out parts (possibly due to being driven in snow, ice, or underwater). The car has now been in the shop for close to six weeks, and I've owned it for less than 60 days total. That means the majority of my ownership experience has been without the vehicle at all. What's been especially frustrating is the way the service department has handled things. There seems to be a serious breakdown in how repairs are managed and quality-checked. On multiple occasions, I've been told the vehicle is "ready," only to pick it up and find it still has problems -- sometimes even worse than when I dropped it off. This rush to mark cars as complete when they clearly aren't is unacceptable, especially when it leads to more downtime and additional repairs. I didn't finance the vehicle through CarMax, so there's no way for them to offer any sort of break or adjustment -- not that any was offered in the first place. Despite all the time lost and repeated trips to the shop, I haven't been offered any compensation or meaningful resolution. I'm not writing this out of anger -- I just want people to be informed. Answered questions when asked. About two months later, I took it in to get looked at because it was shaking at highway speeds, Service department fixed the issue. About 3 months after that, I got a hole in my tire and had to have my tire replaced. About two weeks ago, I noticed my car shaking at highway speeds again. I called Carmax three times and left a voicemail to make a service appointment with no response. I ended up using one of the recommended garages to take my car in and get checked out (That's a separate one star review for telling me $1100 all in for tires and $1700 when I went to buy them. Before another shop confirmed that was NOT the issue). I was told that this model needed four of the same tires so I needed to buy three new tires to match the one that had been replaced. The other issue that was told to me was that the back break pads were at 4mm. I called the service department AGAIN to see why they were so low having just bought the car 8 mos ago- just wanted to discuss with a professional before I spent $600 on new ones. No answer after more messages and attempts. Got a hold of corporate customer service twice. The two reps said that they were more than likely overlooked in the 120pt check before a car is sold. They said they would email the service manager and to expect a call. No call. I called corporate customer service again. They tried to call and connect me. No answer. They called the sales department to have someone physically go get the service manager. I was told to expect a call back in 5. No call back. It's going on three weeks, a dozen calls and several voicemails and NO RESPONSE so that I can have a DISCUSSION with someone about the issue before I spend the money to fix. Sept of 2022 my wife purchased an infiniti jx35 from CarMax. We just knew that the way they present there brand that this was a good place to purchase a car from. We knew they were a little overpriced. Again, we paid that money for peace of mind. This experience is a nightmare. About 6months in we had to replace a cadalitic converter $1500. Then 4 months after that we had to replace the ac condenser along with the alternator. $4000 total cost. When the repair shop gave us the diagnostic of the car they sited that the valve covers, control arms rotors needed to be replaced. Mind you, before CarMax sold use the car we were reassured that it was CarMax checked. That line means absolutely nothing. IT IS A LIE! Now the check engine light comes on and now it is saying the transmission is having trouble. We went to go talk to CarMax and they insulted us by offering less than 3k for a car that car. We said we would get another car you product is not good. They said 3k is all they will do, knowing they overpriced all of there cars. WE STILL OWE 15k THIS IS THE WORST PLACE TO GET A CAR. I had been driving a 14 year old Toyota RAV4 for my entire adolescent and adult life. It was old, but still in pretty good shape so I thought it could last at least another year. I was sorely mistaken. I had taken it to the dealership the day prior and dropped $500 and they wanted me to make another 'necessary' fix for $3,000 so I went with my parents to CarMax to begin exploring my options. We came on a Saturday and did not have an appointment, so we walked around the lot for about 15 minutes. We sat down with Art and told him we were considering buying and selling a car and then we began the appraisal process. We went back to Art's desk and chatted for a bit about what I was looking for, then went outside and started seeing and sitting in those vehicles. Then the worst case scenario struck-- Art received a phone call that my car had broken down on the test drive and we needed to arrange a tow. This is some of the worst possible news you can receive when you dropped $500 on said car, not even 24 hours prior, and you are in the midst of trying to sell said car. Long story short, CarMax was fantastic. They arranged the tow for us, helped push my car under a bridge for the night, and helped me get all of my items from my car. In fact, they even honored the original quote for buying my car. This genuine and kind customer service was just unmatched. The next day I returned and officially sold my car, test drove my top two choices, and bought the car! The paperwork process took some waiting but it wasn't too bad and the woman was very patient in explaining it all. I really feel like I was spoiled buying my first car here. They did a deeper clean of the car during the paperwork process and had it waiting for me with a huge yellow bow! Horrible experience. purchased a car for our daughter for her birthday. noticed it had been curbed on the passenger side and was told they would take care of fixing the wheels. took forever to get an appointment and when I finally did they took the car back and grinder on the wheels while in the car. not only did the wheels go from scratches to large dips and gouges, but they also managed to slip with the grinder and scratch the car! there was also white dust and debris all over the car that is just had cleaned. They took it back again and buffed out the scratch on the body and attempted to "paint" the wheels and grind some more making it worse. when I questioned the work the second time I was told my standards were too high and offered that they would mount the wheels if I purchased new ones. called corporate and have heard nothing in over a month. no one has even cared to look at the photos of the wheels. Will never be back and I encourage everyone to run. we purchased a van years ago and had an amazing experience and why we returned to carmax but it is not what it used to be. customer service is no longer important to them. read more

Update: Car Max does nothing to prepare their vehicles they buy other than change the tires if needed wash the car and make sure the brakes are working. If you don't mind paying top dollar and you don't want to shop around I guess this place is fairly easy but be careful because if you're buying a late model vehicle used, more than likely you can buy a brand new one with discounts at the same price at the dealer. The other day I saw a Honda more expensive than a brand new 2021 model and this was a 2020 used. Also look very carefully at the door jam you'll see a 2016 model will likely be made a year earlier in 2015. You Should Not pay extra for a 2016 refuse to pay that price their advertising the car year older. About half the cars there I found we're actually a almost year older than advertised date look in the door jam for the manufacture date do not pay extra for a car that's a year older than advertised on the window sticker even if it's the later model bottom line it's still a-year-older than advertised. Carmax sold a stolen car to an unknowing customer. The police came and took the car giving it back to carmax. Carmax has since wiped the title of the car so it doesn't show the theft and is reselling it. The customer is now left with debt and no car. They sold my daughter a 2017 Ford Focus that had a recall on it without informMing us, and less than a year and less than 15000 miles and the transmission just went out! The car, however, would not be recalled because Ford states that the VIN on the car was not on the recall list even though it's the exact problem that the car is being recalled for! They stated that the warranty did not cover something as serious as the transmission so my daughter got really screwed! No one will take accountability, and CarMax will not take any kind of ownership. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!! You are taking a risk of getting totally screwed! I would recommend purchasing the extended warranty if you buy a car here, you will need it. My parents purchased a truck here the end of October and have had it back at least 4-5 times for repair. 1st issue: vibration on highway going over 60mph. CarMax took it in and said all 4 tire treads were uneven and replaced all 4 tires. (1 week after purchase) 2nd issue: Truck made a noise when backing up and stopping. CarMax took it in, said the rear brakes were bad and replaced the rear brakes. (30 days after purchase) (Car rental provided). 3rd issue: All interior lights quit working. CarMax took it in and replaced the fuses. (45 days after purchase) 4th issue: Engine light came on as "air flow sensor". CarMax took it in and had to make several repairs. Service appointment was at 10am and no rental car was offered/available, so my father waited while they made multiple repairs and left CarMax after 4:30pm. 5th issue: The White paint is chipping on hood with a matte green color underneath. When the truck was purchased, CarMax would not take my parent's trade in truck as it did not pass their "rigorous" inspection process. Their website states the following: "Cars must also pass a 125+ point inspection and undergo a detailed reconditioning to be sold at CarMax." "Tires and wheels must pass an inspection and are replaced when wear exceeds state or local law." The truck my parent's purchased does not match this "standard" set forth on CarMax's website. I plan on contacting CarMax corporate and taking this up the chain. CarMax used to mean quality in the industry but the fast pace in which they move and sell cars is really damaging the quality of vehicles they sell to the public. From the beginning to the end, CarMax was there for me. I've did all the research and googled everything about the hybrid that I wanted. But I just didn't get the whole picture. That's when I decided to go to the store. I met Ryan. I didn't specifically asked for him, but he was there. I found him to be very helpful. With all the research I did, I then started to ask questions, to see if he was ready. I asked about the color, the make, the model, and even the inventory. He answered them to the best of his ability. I was really impressed. Other cars were available, but were at different locations. It was just going to take a fews days to be transported. I thought about it, but then decided against it. Then came the test drive. After checking out the car, we proceeded to take it on the road. They have a good security system. I have to say, that intersection is a bit challenging. If you aren't experienced with either driving or navigating Nashville traffic, you'll have problems getting the car on the road. Anyways, there weren't any major issues with the car nor the route. I only had problems with the hybrid. It was just like the reviews say. There was lack of power, and the brakes were a bit weird. Needless to say, Ryan explained it all to me why the hybrids were like that (Just this particular model). I am not impressed with hybrids. He then suggested a non-hybrid version. I was game. Let's try it out! The non-hybrid version was a good fit. It drove like a regular car. I didn't have to mash on the gas, nor did I have to adjust my behavior with the brakes. I was in luck. My wife had given me the specifics of what make, model, and features that she wanted. The non-hybrid met all her criteria. I talked it over with her. She was in agreement. I informed Ryan of my decision to purchase the car. During the finance period, I had given Ryan my bank's pre-approval paperwork. I gave it to him to look it over. He gave it a glance. He suggested that CarMax maybe able to compete with the bank. I was sure my bank would beat the dealership. He ran the numbers, and you know what, I was wrong. CarMax actually beat the bank by 1/2 percent. I took their offer. Then Ryan and I proceeded to the finance office. It was a smooth, and easy experience. We dealt with the paperwork, the down payment, and finance terms. The ladies, in finance, treated me with the utmost respect. They provided me with all the information that I would ever need. I am not a pro at finance, but I've already dealt with CarMax before, so I know what to expect. Sorry to be long winded, but my experience was a good one. Shopping online is one thing, but before you make a major purchase,such as a vehicle, you'll need the whole experience. You'll need someone to help you. It's quite rare that a car dealership is this helpful. I had my "ducks" in a row, and Car Max was there to help me complete my shopping experience. I had Enrique and he's been responsive to my texts after the car was bought and I had questions about the plates etc. However, they left the CarMax decal on so I had to go back to remove it. The service Dept older gentleman was so grumpy and just totally ruined my day. He was extremely dismissive and making me feel like it was my fault. He didn't want to take my name. He just said it will take a long time and for me to wait. But guess what, while I was there also sorting out issues with my plates, I told the super amazing Eric (who helped me so efficiently with my plates) what happened with the CarMax decal and he was so nice. He helped talk to the supervisor of the Service Dept and the supervisor actually ended up removing my decal for me. I was so touched. That's why it's not 2 stars. I was pissed for about 20 minutes. Was advise that the Murfreesboro location would take good care of me. Stood at the first desk waiting for someone to greet us for assistance. Several of the employees passed by and never acknowledge we was standing there. A young lady after minutes acknowledge us. After explaining why we was there, we were told to speak with Kevo Mohammad. He acknowledge he received the email from Clint from the Knoxville location. He asked for the keys to the vehicle to check the mileage on the car. Return inside of Carmax and asked Brian the salesman to handle our return to title. As we have sat there for 30 minutes, we asked Brian (salesman) what is the hold up thought we was signing papers to correct the mileage on the vehicle. He advise we where awaiting for Knoxville to transfer the information over to their facility. We stated how long will this take since we was under the impression the process was to correct the mileage. He stated it should not take to much longer. Finally after 45 minutes the information was in the system. Now it's time to start a new application over and run credit for the 3rd time. We asked why are we starting the process over when we only was there to update the correct mileage on the vehicle. Doing a return to title means you have to start all over in the process. We stated credit was already ran twice by CARMAx. Once for the pre approval and second for the actual car. We are not running credit again for something that was already approved and the papers are signed for the car. Asked to speak with management since we (customer) had no idea this would be another process of purchasing a car. We have currently been there an hour without knowing the process. We are now stuck at Carmax without transportation because they have the car in their possession and we have no car but they have the down payment. Ms. Shalonda walked over, explained to her that we had no idea of the process and now we are without a car. We need to leave because we was not under any impression we would be there forever purchasing the car over again. She stated this is the process. She offer to get a lyft to take me to work and pick me up. This was not acceptable because this was not the plans we had. We expected to leave just like we came. We went to the vehicle to gather our belongs to leave the car with Carmax was not interested in purchasing the car at this point since we had to go through the process all over again. Sales manager Kevo walks out to ask what the problem was advise this is not acceptable customer service. If this was going to be the process they could have asked us if this was ok or if we had time. We had no understanding on their process of how this all works. I stated to Kevo (sales manager) that they had my down payment and I had no car. I didn't have anything to show for the money ($2,000) they collect from me. I expected my money back by their Business Office (Knoxville or Murfreesboro) because this was no return Love it or return it 30 day money back guarantee. This was an error on their side not ours and so why are we being penalize for their mistake. My sales representative Rebekah Poteet and the sales manager Robert at the Carmax located at 2501 Powell avenue in Nashville ruined my entire car buying experience. I was scheduled for an appointment that according to Rebekah was already booked by another person. Therefore I was put to the side and forced to wait long durations of time. Rebekah ran my credit 4x for no reason, was reluctant to answer my questions or assist me, and did not input the correct finance amount on my contract. It unfortunately got worse after I made my car purchase. The car had visible damage to the back/trunk area, was dirty not clean/detailed inside with car parts missing, the key fobs were mangled and falling apart, there were random loose items belonging to someone else inside of the car, and the car had maintenance service issues the very next day after purchase. Pat the service manager was supposed to assist in repairing these issues yet he failed to follow through with this promise. I bought a 2010 Toyota Sienna, overpriced, because in the past I believed Car Max did great service before you buy it. The Serpentine belt broke 4 mths later. THAT repair they paid, but it has needed $$$ repairs every 3 months since then. A whole year of this! And now, exactly a year from being left on the side of the road 700 mls from my house, it happens AGAIN!
