I bought a Nissan Murano from Trey or Dre. I can't remember which but he knew that the front end was falling off and didn't tell me. The only thing he said is that there was a minor fender bender that was 100% fixed. But six months after I bought the car my son said hey mom the whole front of your car is falling off. I needed an oil I made an appointment to get that done and talk about the front end of my car. long story short. I was there for an oil change and supposedly all they had to do was to get clips to put the front end back on. I was there for six hours and nothing ever happened. He kept lying to me saying that he was calling this place and that place, but he didn't know about me as I knew owners of those places because of my own business and I called there and they said no one ever called and the reality is he could've walked across the street to a Nissan dealer and gotten those clips done but he did absolutely nothing . I used to like Carmax I would never go there again!!! I did go to a Nissan dealer to get rid of that car and they did give me a fair price thankfully and purchased a brand new Nissan Murano through Rosen. When I bought a car from CarMax, I didn't check its value beforehand. The sales tag listed the price as $40,000 and I decided to go ahead with the purchase. Six months later, I needed to buy ALL new tires because, according to CarMax, they're allowed to sell vehicles with just the minimum legal tire tread. Now that I'm considering an upgrade, I've discovered that the car was only worth $21,000 when I bought it. I'm disappointed by this experience. A WARNING to everyone: always compare the real value of a car to the asking price and check the tire tread as well before signing any paperwork. I bought a 2016 Ford Explorer in December 2025. Two days after buying it the check engine light came on. I took it back to Carmax - Milwaukee, they gave me a loaner while they checked it out. They told me it was good but if the light comes back on I will need to take it to Ford. Next day light is back on. I take it to Ford they said a new engine was needed. Carmax refuse to pay Ford and sent it to ETE auto repair - were they replaced the transmission. Right away I could tell my truck was not driving right - it felt like it was driving in a low gear. Took it back to Carmax they had the truck for one month. They call me to come pick the truck up. I get there and ask what options do I have. Carmax appraisal team only wanted to give me $7,000 for a car I have not been able to enjoy. I was told I need to pay $10,000. Drive truck off the lot just to find out that my sunroof is no longer operable and stuck in the open position. Take it back to Carmax because when I gave my truck to them for an engine issue my sunroof was working. Still waiting on outcome. It is now March 2026. read more

If you're buying a car and trading in, you need to listen to people like my mechanic who know what they are talking about and start by bringing your car (pre-owned is not a real word and makes less and less sense the more you think about it) HERE first. Without any hassle, pressure or dishonesty, they will give you an accurate, written baseline offer. No, it won't be the highest offer you can get but it's not accurate to call it "low-ball." They make money by selling cars, so if they buy it from you, they need to sell it for more. Don't need an MBA from Kellog to figure that out. They have gotten their profit margins down to science, so they don't waste time thinking about your car more than they have to and they won't offer you the best offer you can get. However, in order to get a better deal, you will have to put in more time and effort, so, how much is your time worth? Do you have the time and energy to find someone willing to pay $1,000 more for your car? Maybe you do, take the written offer so you're armed with a negotiation point. Are you trading in at a dealership? They are very skillful at playing games with the trade in value so you'll have a slight edge knowing for sure what you can get for your trade in at CarMax. read more

6 car purchased in 5 years and everyone of them has had issues. Was completely low balled on trade in value for 2 Audis I purchased from them. One of the Audis suffers from severe oil consumption that was present in the vehicle when I bought it but didn't become aware of the issue till after their 30 day window and was offered a "discount" to have the work done there. Trust me you are better off buying elsewhere as they sell vehicles with masked issues and if you didn't purchase their Max Care plan you are screwed. It will cost me between 6-8k to fix a problem I shouldn't have had to in the first place if they hadn't sold me a lemon. I will never buy from them ever again. We're at a point where we're not sure what to do with our vehicle and someone had said "See what CarMax will give you." The whole idea with CarMax is that they will purchase your car from you and you have no obligation to purchase from them. I believe this is correct because they asked me once "Do you know what you're doing after this car?" and I said "No. Just keeping my options open" and that was the last they mentioned that. It was really easy to get a quote. I scheduled an appointment online, for the same day. Drove there for the appointment. Someone checked me in, took some info from me about my vehicle and any special features it might have or damage/accidents that may have occured, and showed me the waiting room. During this time they looked at my car and test drove it. About 25-30 minutes later, as promised, they came and found me in the waiting room and we went back to their desk. They walked me through their appraisal system telling me about my vehicle and the features. Then they gave me the dollar amount they'd give my car and the conditions in the offer. There was ZERO pressure involved and the young man was nice. I'm declining the offer because it was a low ball offer by $2000-$3000, but the experience was fine. read more

I have heard very mixed reviews about the Carmax buying experience, however I have yet to experience anything to complain about, in fact, their service and professionalism is rather amazing. From having my car shipped from Nashville, TN to Milwaukee, WI, the car arrived without delay and on time. My salesperson, Melissa Perez, was in contact with me several times throughout the transfer process, just to touch base. When getting into the dealer, I'd arrived with financing on my own, however Carmax was able to find me a better financing rate. After taking delivery, I noticed a few things that needed to be repaired, their service department provided me with a loaner car and contacted me rather quickly to let me know what parts would need to be ordered and what needed to be repaired. Brandon in the service department was great. I've purchased vehicles via Boucher and Russ Darrow, none of which can compare to the quality of customer service I received at Carmax. read more

Brought my car in to sell as a dealer friend recommended I do so. While I was there the sales people were friendly and conversational. We pulled up similar vehicles they had in their inventory for what I anticipated they would be for sale for after they could potentially buy it from me. After 1 hour later they came back with an extreme low-ball offer thousands less than the dealers and even lower than the Sales guy I was talking to thought it would be. Without prompt the sales guy went to grab the evaluator to find out what led to the low ball offer. The guy came over to me and when I asked him the question he looked at me dumbfounded and said this is his offer to buy my car, if I have a problem with it leave and sell it to someone else. No explanation given for the lower than anticipated value. I told them both that this would be reason for me to leave here and never do business with them again. I ended up trading the car in for a much better offer that same day and got better financing and a below invoice price on a new car that even they couldn't touch on a used car with 20K miles a year older. So I guess I can only recommend CarMax if you want the following: 1) Lower trade in value 2) Higher Prices on Used vehicles 3) Higher interest rates on financing I know one thing for sure... I will not be returning to CarMax ever and instead will make an effort to warn people against going there. read more

warning: this is a long one... I have spent hours formulating how to best describe my experience with Carmax and this Carmax location. I will provide support for my opinion, but in short: HORRIBLE. I would never, ever suggest a friend purchase a car from Carmax or this location. ONLY buy a car at this location if you will NOT return it and will NOT need work done within 30 days. DO NOT trust the 3 day payoff option - it is a nightmare and a hassle. They don't tell you when you test drive that they don't take wired money. They wait until you drive, go home for a few days, and come back to tell you that -- forcing you to take out a Carmax Auto Finance loan with a much higher interest rate. My husband's family has purchased at least 6 cars from various Carmax locations, and one month prior to my purchase, my mother purchased one at this location. We were happy and excited to purchase from Carmax and everything seemed great - signed the paperwork and were walking to our new car. As we walk up, we see that there are NEW scratches in the hood that were not there when we test drove it. The sales lady assured me that is not up to their standard and we could get it fixed. The only appointment within 5 days was on the fifth day -- giving us essentially no time to consider our options. They looked over the car and assured they would fix the damage that they had caused between our purchases and walking out. They took the car from us on a Thursday. A full week went by and nothing. The next Friday my husband called and the guy said it would be there that day. Called Saturday - service shop was closed and no one knew where the car was. Call back Monday - guy admits that the car showed up on Friday with a NEW DENT IN THE HOOD from them transporting it. He did not take any photos and made the executive decision to return OUR car to the Kenosha location. He also approved of them repairing the dent. He told Kenosha that we approved of the work. They did not take photos or any documentation of the damage that they caused to our vehicle. After days of complaining to the Metro location and the corporate office, we still did not have our vehicle. The corporate office was completely unable to assist and actually somehow found that we had authorized it (even though we were never even told about it). We wanted a reduction in price (since we purchased it without that damage) and/or a lifetime warranty on the work that they performed (which was repainting the entire roof). On Thursday (2 full weeks after returning it to be fixed), the general manager of the Metro location informed us that he thought it would be best for us to return our vehicle and go our separate ways. We agreed. We then began the process of returning the car - another nightmare. We asked for a printout of all of the work that has been done on the car since they had it. They completely lied and said that we complained about the dent in the hood, and the date of the complaint was a full week before the dent even happened. The next guy who goes to buy the car will have no idea that Carmax's ineptitude is the reason that work was done - and not because of some previous owner. It is frightening that they would go to such an extent to lie and cover up their own errors, and then refuse to make them right. As for the return of our downpayment, they said the return of our funds would take 4-6 weeks. We pointed out that the fine print of the return says 3-6 days when the funds have cleared. They then promised to rush it. We received our refund check exactly 3 days later. It has been ONE week now since the return and I called to check why our loan has not been paid off. She looked and said there was some sort of error at the home office in Virginia. They have not been cutting any checks to banks. No one called us or told us there was any issue and I have been stupidly assuming that Carmax was doing anything to resolve the situation. If I had not called today, who knows when the error would have been corrected. I still have no answer for when I will receive my refund. Do not be fooled by the friendliness of the staff at this location - they are inept and unable to help resolve anything. Carmax has created a strange corporate structure where the home office controls some aspects but then defers to the local general managers. I would never suggest going to this location, not even to someone I did not like. Drive a car at a normal dealership, get it evaluated by a trusted mechanic, and go the traditional route. This is not worth the headache. read more

Requested online that CarMax bring a car from Madison so I could test drive it. Never heard from them until I received a call from main office in another state. Told him I'd like to test drive a car and he said he couldn't get ahold of anyone at the Milwaukee store. I was ready to buy from them but nobody ever returned my calls. ONE STAR IS JUST TOO MANY!!! CarMax (Milwaukee) ( CarMax ) really forced it tonight! The way they treated my parents, I am ashamed to even say I got a car from them! My mom purchased a 2008 Cadillac CTS from them. She loves her car!! Let me get into the issue! She took her car in, to get it looked at, they told her all of the things that was wrong with the car, she even asked if they recommended a flush for the vehicle, they stated no because the car was fairly new and it was not needed, so okay cool, lets no get that done then! Few weeks down the line the transmission starts to blow out. She calls, because she has a warranty (she always made sure to keep the car in good condition). They then stated "because you didn't get the flush we cannot honor the warranty" okay, cool, we'll let y'all slide with that too. So, they take the car February 4th, 2016, supposedly fixing the transmission. They ended up ordering three transmissions which were all the wrong ones!!! They ordered three rear wheel drives and my mom has a all wheel drive luxury sport mode, which they should have known!!! They then explained to my mom that they have exhausted all of their efforts as to finding a transmission, and we would have to "get one" on their own! Mind you, they were not offered a loaner vehicle until almost a MONTH LATER. (My mom was still paying a FULL CAR NOTE and FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE, while she didn't even have the vehicle). Then when finally told to pick it up, today ( April 28th, 2016 ). After being told it was finally ready and paying for the transmission. They went to the car and the check engine light was still on!!! The car wasn't washed! It was dirty! After sitting for almost three months!!! My mom had to ask for a courtesy car wash. Then after requesting the money back several times, they wouldn't refund the money and called the police and rescinded the loaner because they "DIDN'T AGREE" with additional REPAIRS. Now all of a sudden it needs a timing chain. Mind you, all of the diagnosis reads NOTHING about a timing chain. Every thing was sealed and dated! MORGAN the "manager" had the audacity to handwrite over the words "replace the transmission" and then wrote " replace the timing chain" then stated it was a computer error. Throughout the entire three months my parents were never told anything about a timing chain!!! AND THATS NOT THE KILLER PART!!! THE MANAGER TIM STATED A LOANER CAN BE GIVEN BUT IT WOULD BE UP TO MORGAN AND OF COURSE SHE STATED NO. I honestly believe someone in the service area ruined the vehicle and now want to put everything on my parents! I am so ashamed to even say I purchased a car from CARMAX!!! I think it's time for a new vehicle. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE ANYMORE!!! I'm really thinking about giving this car up!! They called to say it arrived but the sales person was too busy for the next 2 days to show it to me. When I was finally given an appointment I went and the outside had many scuffs and scratches plus the drivers seat had a tear in the leather on the back 3"'s long. Said they would buff the car and fix the leather. A week went buy and I left numerous emails and voicemails with the sales person. After another few days I received a call saying they would get the seat fixed. Another week with me trying to find out and no response. I was just starting a search for a new vehicle, and decided to see what Carmax had to offer. I spent the last two weeks researching different makes and models to see what would best fit my needs. The fact that a potential buyer can see the exact vehicle online they may want to test drive is a big plus. Anyway, I found one car is was particularly interested in, a 2012 Ford Edge. and decided to make an appointment to see it in person and maybe test drive it. I made an appointment for 6pm Saturday evening and my wife and I arrived about 545pm. We we warmly greeted when we arrived and were told Trenita, who called me to confirm, was with another customer. When Trenita finished with the other customer, she again greeted both of us with a warm smile and handshake and asked if we would like to see the Edge....why sure, I said. We took the car I had seen online out for a test drive and found it to be just what I was looking for. We started to talk about how the buying process works, when I noticed some staining on the center console. I asked Trenita about whether it could be cleaned and she said they would try to get the spots clean. We came back to the office where the paperwork was getting started, and I made sure Trenita knew that if the spots were not removed I did not want to buy that particular car. She understood and went back to the prep area to check on the progress of the cleaning. After she came back, we all went to check out the cleaning process, and unfortunately, the spots were not removed. I explained that the spots were a deal breaker, and was about to leave, when we remembered we had seen another Edge on the lot that was the Limited version. A few more bells and whistles, but still a nice car. We went to look at it, and we ended up buying that one. So, after a bit of inspection with the Limited version inside the prep area so we could really check it out thoroughly, we started the financing and buying process. During this time, we provided Trenita with basic information to fill out the credit application, and we got our financing options within about two minutes. Also during this time my current vehicle was appraised and we were given a very generous offer, which I was definitely not expecting. This made the decision to buy the new car easy. Since I wasn't expecting to buy a car that day, I did not have my title and other things necessary to trade in a car. But Trenita said that would be fine, just bring the title and anything else to the office on Monday, and they would give me the bank draft for the offer on my old car. I left my old car on their lot and drove the new car home the same night! When we finished all the online process with Trenita, we were then led to the business office where we were assisted by Brittney. What a nice person! So funny and she explained everything we were signing and answered all our questions thoroughly. Once we completed the signing process, we found out our new car was being filled with gas, cleaned inside and out and made to look like a brand new car. So, from the time we walked into the store, to the time we were driving home in our new car, we were treated with the utmost respect, courtesy and friendliness, and would not hesitate to purchase another car from the Carmax Milwaukee office. read more

Drove two hours to see this truck that I thought I was going to buy. Arrived around the time I discussed with them. Went out to look at the truck. I was extremely disappointed, it was filthy. Especially when you knew a customer was arriving to look at the truck. Covered in dirt and pollen, bird poop. I'm no mechanic but I know enough about vehicles. They said it had front end damage. Didn't give me specifics but from what I gathered it was hit pretty decent. Pulled to the right while driving, scratches on the bumper, passenger side fender, truck bed. Had no pictures of this. It looked like a hack tried to paint the scratches. Almost looked like nail polish. It was horrible! Tried to talk the price down since I found out they had another truck at a Chicago location for 1k more with half the miles. No haggle they said. I thought it was complete shit since I drove two hours to get a truck that was in like new condition and thought it didn't look like a hack job. I'm completely disappointed in my experience with this dealership and staff since the staff talked down about other dealerships. Also not the friendliest! The salesman let my wife and I test drive a Mazda CX-5 as much as we needed. The salesman was nice, professional and there wasn't any pressure from him. The transaction went smoothly - and I was surprised that they would take a personal check (note: you do have to prove that you have the funds available). Overall it was an easy pleasant experience. I've noticed that their vehicles are typically priced a little higher than other dealers but they set the price at a reasonable level on the one I was interested in. This is my third purchase from CarMax. I had the same salesperson every time Melissa Perez. No dancing around about price , we got good trade in values every time. If you don't like dickering around this is the place for you. The only negative experience was when we went to register the plates. I am an Amateur Radio operator with my call sign. I explained that all we had to do was pay the extra fees from auto to pickup truck and we are good. They kept trying to put it through as personal plates which they are not. They are AMA plates. We bought our 2008 CTS to Car Max .for a transmission problem on February 4 2016. We had to find our own transmission. We was told car ready by Tim the manager on April 28 2016. All this time car was there were never heard from Tim the manager until it was time to pay. Tim the manager never informed us that check engine light on. After we paid for our car Morgan the service manager told us that it has a timing belt problem but we can take it. We refuse to take it after paying $1200 1 for repair. We complain and Morgan crossed out transmission repair and put timing chain needs to be repaired. Morgan got angry because we wouldn't take the car until fully repaired. Morgan and Mark called the Milwaukee Police department on us because we refuse to take the car. No one at Car Max told us about check engine light before we paid. Now we can't get loaner because Morgan has an attitude we can't get a loaner. I believe Morgan and Mark treated us the way they did because we're African American and they're White and can't stand that we disagreed and refused to take the car.
