If I could leave no stars I would. Just stay away. Seriously don't waste your time or money. Bought car on 8/23. Didn't even get it off the lot before I heard a nocking noise. I didn't qualify for a "loaner" for some stupid excuse about my insurance. Then they find not 1 or 2 but 3 things. One they claim is a normal noise for Chevy. I tried to get someone on the business office for 3 days while they had this car as I had found another car elsewhere that I absolutely love and it has no issues. So here I am literally 5 days later. No car, no money back and a lot of wasted time and energy. Sold my car here (first time selling or buying a car in my adult life) and forgot to grab my tag the day I sold it. Registered my new car today and realized I could get a refund on my registration. So I called to ask if carmax by chance still had my plate. I was told carmax had documentation that they gave my plate back (which did not happen. I even have a photo of me and my car after I sold it and the tag is in fact there) and they only hold things in lost and found for 30 days until they just toss it so I'm just out of luck. Finally found the car I wanted. Spoke to Tiffany and she reserved the car and put in a transfer request to send the vehicle my nearby Carmax outlet. She told me there was a minor repair needed and she would get back to me with an update. Several days passed without any word from her. I then called and talked to Carmax "Customer Experience Consultant" Christopher Foglio. He apologized profusely and promised to consult with his manager, get to the bottom of the problem and call me early the next day. Chris never called. Chris has both my landline and cell #s. Come to find out that AFTER I initially reserved the car, it was subsequently reserved by someone else and transferred to another location. What a waste of time. I complained via email, copied the CEO and to this date, NO ONE at Carmax has bothered to respond. I feel totally disrespected. Since this type of horrible customer service seems to be companywide, it is likely your experience at your local Carmax branch will suck as well. Save yourself a headache and buy from a private party, local dealer or one of the other REPUTABLE online providers like Carvana or Cargurus. read more

Management is terrible. I went in today to test drive a couple of different vehicles and hopefully get one for a 24hr test drive so I could decide if I really liked it or not instead of the typical 20 minute test drive. One was a truck, and one was a sports car. I took both out for a short test drive to make sure I liked the both of them. I loved the mustang, so I asked for a 24hr test drive in it, and was denied due to it being a sports car, which that I understand. Then I asked about the truck, they denied me because I was "all over the place" and I "needed to make up my mind". Keep in mind, I wanted BOTH vehicles. I had a great experience buying my Jeep here. No pressure at all, and I was able to have an overnight test drive. That's pretty much unheard of anymore, but it's great to be able to take your time and really go over the vehicle. Much better than a hurried, half hour test drive with a pushy salesman that you get at a dealership. I see there are some nasty reviews that have been posted since I was there last. I plan to shop for another car here soon, so we'll see if something has changed. Right now though, I like this store and will continue to recommend it. read more

Then the sales manager came over and couldn't fix his salespersons incompetence and when we asked for the general manager, he wouldn't come out and speak with us over the issue. i had a child that had to be picked up in an hour and THE GENERAL MANAGER wasnt going to come out bc he didn't want to deal with it. If I could give the service department a negative 5 stars I would. I had a fine experience with transferring a vehicle from another state, getting my vehicle title and finalizing the purchase of my vehicle. The issue came when I wanted to schedule a simple oil change... During my first scheduled oil change, I was able to reach the service desk via phone, schedule an appointment and have the service completed; however, these were the most uninterested workers I've ever been "helped" by. I stood directly in front of multiple workers who ignored me and waiting for someone else to come grab me regarding my vehicle. These people were casually having conversations about their weekend and football which is clearly more important than someone paying you for a service. A slight annoyance but the service got done and I was in my way. Fast forward to today (6 months later) and I'm trying to schedule for another oil change. I called twice a week for 4 weeks and had no one answer from either the service department or business department. I had to call corporate office and have them call to get me something scheduled. When corporate called me back they said everyone is busy and the branch will call me back later to schedule. Absolutely insane. Needless to say, I will be going elsewhere for my service needs moving forward. read more

My husband and I just traded in our Chrysler 200 and purchased a Chevy Equinox. This was by far the easiest car purchasing event I have ever had. Marcel Taylor was fantastic. He promptly got us to test drive the car I had my eye on (and we had fun in that test drive too!), and gave us time to browse through some other cars with absolutely no pressure to buy. Once we decided on our new car, Marcel was great at explaining everything with selling our Chrysler, purchasing the Equinox, and details regarding additional coverage plans. We loved the no hassle price, and they gave us the best deal on our 200. Sara Sprague was our business office associate who took us through all the paperwork. After buying the Equinox and starting a separate transaction to sell our 200 (we didn't plan to do a trade-in, we originally just wanted to sell it), Sara found that it would save us almost $1000 to do a trade-in, and we would still walk away with a check for the 200. Marcel and Sara worked with us to return the Equinox and then re-purchase it with the trade-in. I couldn't believe that they took so much time to take care of us that way. We were also able to keep the same tag, and Sara took care of everything for that transition. Filling out paperwork is never fun, but Sara's humor made signing my name a bunch of times not too bad. Once all the paperwork was completed and Sara gave us the check for our 200, Marcel met us in the garage with a freshly cleaned Equinox with a full tank of gas and the tag on the back, and he even put a giant bow on the hood! After Marcel took our pictures, my husband and I went on our merry way. I don't think I'll ever buy a new car again without going through CarMax. I always thought that trading in and purchasing a car was supposed to be a long, painful process, but CarMax changed my mind! They also have a seven-day return policy. If you decide that the car you bought isn't right, you can bring it back, no questions asked. If you come here, ask for Marcel. He's a good and honest guy and a true gentleman (he always opened the car doors for me and pulled my chairs out in the office!). And I hope you get Sara when it's time to make your car decisions official. She's quite the humorous gem of CarMax. I hope the head manager at the Kansas City CarMax reads this review (and if you are, take Marcel and Sara out to lunch sometime and/or give them an extra paid vacation day. We had a fabulous shopping experience and the nicest sales person. Unfortunately everything turned south when we went to register the vehicle and found that the dealership in Merriam, KS had not given us the original title (we did have a photo copy of the title along with all the purchase paperwork, warranty information, extended warranty plan etc..). We called and no one EVER ANSWERS the Business Office phone and we ultimately had to file a case with customer relations and requested that since we could not register the car before the tags expired, nor could we get a vehicle vin check done before the tags expired, we requested new temp tags while they waited for a duplicate title to come in from Colorado. We were told NOPE. So, our car is not driveable, when we go to do vin check with highway patrol we will show up with expired tags (could get a ticket) and then we have to pay fines with the state because Carmax business center failed to give us the title. They even blamed us for losing it (yet I have every piece of paper inside the packet they provided us). So, basically all they are willing to do is get the duplicate title and shove us out the door with no ownership and responsibility on their part. I will NEVER buy from CarMax again and will ensure I tell everyone I know about this horrible experience, unless CarMax wakes up and does the right thing. I am so disheartened and angry, and to think we were going to come back and trade my daughter's car in for a new one with CarMax next month -absolutely will never do business again - can't trust them! I bought a Dodge Journey from the Merriam Kansas store its been over thirty days and they still don't have a title for the car so I can't register it.They said they'd get back in a couple days and three days later crickets! I am filing a complaint with the Kansas attorney Generals office. Also I made three trips to the store to get my radio that doesn't work fixed. Wednesday they told me it was fixed and it worked on the way home. Today I start the car and no radio no screen no nothing. Had a vehicle picked out and held then it was sold out from under me:| I know that's the car business. Got a call from Cory 10 minutes before my wife and I showed up. Wasn't able to take the call as I was driving. Was greeted and told that there had been a computer glitch... this glitch was in effect for over 2 days by my calculation. What I suspect happened is the vehicle was sold out from under me. What adds insult to injury is that the person that greeted us was going to look for another. I wish I could put negative stars. I had the absolute worst experience here. We were there for 3 hours and made nearly no progress. We were gunna finish the next day but then got a call that the car I was going to buy is suddenly "in the shop". Never told me why or what was wrong with it. Then when I was maybe going to do express pickup I asked them where my registration was and they said they "lost it". The store would answer then hang up three times in one night. And had us look through lost and found for my car registration. For the fourth day we went back demanding for my registration or talking to a manager when they magically found it. If I could give the service department and the financial department a minus 5 stars I would, customer service is beyond horrible and to get someone on the phone to help you with anything is a challenge and that's if they answer their phones and when they do you're left on hold for hours. My daughter got a car from there a few months ago and she has had it in the service department more than she has driven it and now her car barely starts and they're telling her now she has to pay for it even though it's the same issues she has had in the past. Worst car buying experience ever. Had to pay $499.00 to have the car shipped in and was told it would take 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks I called the salesman multiple times with no return call. 4 weeks later when it showed up I was not notified for over a week and then I was told it had been damaged in shipping. A dent in the rear bumper which i don't believe Carmax would have told me about if it wasn't for me driving to Carmax and asking to see the vehicle. Only then was I told about the dent. Carmax fixed the dent and I picked up the car a day later. We supplied all the info Carmax asked for including a VIN specific Insurance card at the time of purchase. Carmax said they take care of registering the vehicle once we returned the title and inspection form. This was returned 4 days later. The following Monday I call to check on it and they told me they hadn't got to it yet. So I gave them a week and now they are telling they they sent all the paperwork back to me to register the car my self. Reason? No insurance card on file. A VIN specific insurance card was provided at the time of purchase. So now they are telling me to register the vehicle my self. Oh and to top all of that off 2 days after I purchased the vehicle I received a text stating the my vehicle was in and ready to pick up. Wow. If someone reads this please pass it on. Worst company EVER!! (I would give a minus 10 if that was an option) My husband and I spent a whole week trying to contact their customer service department to confirm our online scheduled appointment on a vehicle we were interested in before we traveled out there. Several attempts via telephone and email. Every call that was made we were left on hold for over 45 min's and then transferred from one rep to another. Representatives were extremely rude. Had no knowledge what they were doing. We even reached out to Corporate office and still till this day no response!! They claimed they were working from home and did not have much assess. We flew out to Kansas over 1569 miles away from home to purchase our vehicle and we were helped by a Sales rep named Henry (Presidents Club). Since he knew it was a for sure deal, he was short in his comments and no personality and came off very condescending. We tried to make friendly small talk and shared our experience with him and he didn't care. The fact we purchased our vehicle for $70k & paid in full you would think he would have appreciated our business. After we were sent over to the signing department they had us wait for 3 hours. What a joke of place!! DO NOT recommend CARMAX to anyone!! Invest your money with a company that deserves your hard earn money and wants your business!! I used Carmax in Albuquerque and bought a beautiful Jeep, and it lasted so long that I passed it down to my son. I have only owned my Truck from Carmax in Kansas City for less than a year and the AC compressor already failed. They charge you three grand more than the vehicle is worth, which was supposed to be because they only sold quality vehicles, but that is no longer true. This will be the last vehicle I buy from Carmax. Their quality inspections are useless. They are worse than the small mom-and-pop dealerships because they only sell defective vehicles because the other dealerships have learned to game them by selling them their defective vehicles they can't offload. At the very least get the warranty, my mechanic who I am getting to know very well after buying from Carmax says the warranty is very comprehensive. You would think a new truck with less than 35 thousand miles would go at least a year before needing $3,000 in repairs. Good luck with Carmax or better yet, go somewhere else! read more

Horrifying experience. Bare with me: Mid July we found a jeep that we absolutely adored. Even gave it a name (we are those people) . We paid to have the jeep shipped and submitted for a trade in offer for our current jeep. We received a trade in offer for $17,400. Awesome, so far so good. The initial estimated arrival date came and went. We called and texted for updates and every time received different answers or "waiting for VIN verification, it may be ready today". We are told there was a mechanical issue that occurred during transport that needed fixed, that was also part of the initial delay. During this time, the trade in offer went from $17400 to $16800, to now an astonishing $14,600. WHAT?! Not only that, the vehicle is now miraculously ready while we are on vacation and we had to beg for them to hold the vehicle we paid to be shipped for 3 business days. He said he knew what it was before he walked in to inspect the repairs that that auto shop said was required. The warranty company they employee is as shady as they come. They will do everything in their power to not fix your vehicle even if it requires lying. Buyer beware. For starters they couldn't find the vehicle in the system and stated that the vehicle isn't there. I literally saw it at the lot and had to walk the salesman out to it. Then they said I couldn't test drive the vehicle because the "system is down". I spoke to the manager and the best thing she can say was "there's nothing we can do". Absolutely made no sense. Despite their posturing as some better way to buy a used car -- our experience w/ CarMax showed they embody why people often dread buying used cars -- and why people often distrust the people who sell them. First, they misrepresented the availability of the initial car we wanted buy -- and wasted weeks of our time. Then, they misrepresented the condition of the second car we wanted. AFTER we paid hundreds of (non-refundable) dollars to transfer a car to our area -- we discovered (in the first minute of looking it over) obvious signs of prior damage and a poor repair job -- contrary to what we were promised. Then to top it off -- they offered us less than 1/3 of the low end Kelley Blue Book trade-in-value for our car! The salesperson admitted that had we traded our car just a few weeks earlier we would have received a far larger trade offer. She blamed the impact of Covid-19 for the reduction in their offer. Then -- w/o an ounce of propriety (or even self-awareness) she blithely insisted that Covid-19 had no impact whatsoever on the pricing of their cars!?! We're supposed to accept less than 1/3 of what our car is worth -- but they wouldn't budge a nickle on the sticker price. Meh. Needless to say -- we're taking our business elsewhere. read more

I had a very positive experience buying my truck from CarMax (the one in Tulsa), but I can't recommend having any service done at the Merriam location (but I'm guessing it's the same situation at all locations.) Carmax is strictly assembly line service. I had a 75k mile service which included oil change & tire rotation. I've seen nothing to suggest these things weren't done correctly, but doing the bare minimum isn't quality service. I took my truck & ran a few errands in KC, but when I prepared to go home & got on the highway I discovered that my tires should have been balanced in addition to being rotated. At 60 mph, the steering wheel vibrated so much it was dangerous. The service dept was closed for the weekend by then so I had to limp the 30 miles home at 45 mph. On Monday I had to take the truck somewhere else to have the tires balanced. My conclusion is that apparently CarMax mechanics don't test drive vehicles they work on. My truck was returned to me with less than ONE mile added to the odometer. Nobody drove it after the tires were rotated so of course nobody told me I needed to have them balanced. That's mediocre mechanic work. So I guess if you just need your oil changed, you'd be safe, but don't expect any higher quality work for more serious issues. read more
