CarMax Misrepresented the Vehicle and Refused Accountability UPDATE - 10/3/25: A representative from corporate reached out and after conflicting information and excuses from what I was told by the dealership they are still unwilling to take any accountability or make any offer of compensation. --- I purchased a car from CarMax after their employees explicitly told me it had no accident history. That statement was false and misleading. When I went to sell the car, I discovered that the DMV had recorded an accident on the vehicle a full year before I bought it. This misrepresentation cost me a $3,000 in lost value, verified by an auto broker who showed me recent comparable sales of nearly identical vehicles. When I raised this issue with CarMax, they refused to accept any responsibility or compensate me for any of the loss in value. CarMax heavily markets "peace of mind" and "transparency," but my experience shows those claims are hollow. If their employees can misrepresent a car's history and the company refuses to make it right, then buyers cannot trust the accuracy of anything they're told. Furthermore, do not rely on the CarMax vehicle inspection to uncover previous damage that would have been discoverable by a competent mechanic. Be certain to complete an independent pre-purchase inspection using a competent mechanic. CarMax misrepresented the vehicle I purchased, and their refusal to stand behind their word shows a lack of integrity. CarMax paid $5,000 more than the brokers best offer. I was a little hesitant after reading reviews, but overall it was an excellent experience. Super sketchy experience, unfortunately. I received an online quote by inputting my VIN which tells them everything they need to know about my car, including features. The quote was (of course) a bit lower than private party value, but I was selling my car to leave the country for a few years and had too many other things to do to worry about selling to a private party, so I decided to go the CarMax route. If you need something sold fast, it's definitely the easiest route! I had gotten my quote 9 days prior to walking into the dealership, so I knew the quote I had (only good for 5 days) was 4 days expired. The guy at the front desk (Dylan) asked me if I had a quote and I told him "I did but it expired 4 days ago" so he said they'd have to do an inspection, which I expected. He didn't even ask for the amount I was quoted. (Note that we also did not talk about why I was coming in, other than to get a quote. I did not share that I was planning to sell them my car that day nor that I was leaving the country the following day.) 30-ish minutes later, he returns to tell me that my car is in great shape, no mechanical issues (all true - it only had 34k miles on it) and showed me an offer a full $3.5k below the price I was quoted online. What??? I ask him why there's such a disparity, which is when he asked me to show him my quote - which I did. Dylan leaves to go back to his manager - also named Dylan/Dillon - and returns 20 minutes later to tell me they aren't sure why the two values are so different (???) but they've increased my offer by $2.5k - which is still $1k below my online offer. Again, I ask him why the disparity. How has my car depreciated $1k in 4 days. He gives me some BS line about how the 2024 cars have all been released in the last 9 days since I got my quote, so all the previous years have dropped. I'm a victim of unfortunate timing, he says. Mm, hmm. Pretty sure I'm a victim of a shady manager trying to make his numbers look better. (I'm female, by the way.) You would think that after they were discovered attempting such an obviously lowball price, a manager would look at the quote and honor it - if only to prevent a review such as this one, even if they weren't being driven by some semblance of integrity. These people took advantage of my mom. Turned in a used Hyundai Tucson 2013 with 74,450 miles. That was valued at 7,000$. During our visit the offer went down to 5,000$ dollars due to some "hail damage". When prompted the employee showed 3 spots of legitimate hail damage and 15 spots of "hail damage" that if you look at it from a certain light you might be able to see. It was ridiculous enough that the appraiser had to talk to another appraiser, that eventually settled on an apparent exhaust drip that was stated to be "extremely small and didn't affect the cars handling or driving at all". Then to top it off, after accepting the offer they made us wait an hour while the car acceptance paperwork was proceeded. It's our fault for not doing the extra work to sell to a legit buyer. Expect the run around, and do not trust the online appraisal value. It's absolutely worth it to go through with selling it on your own. Everything about this experience was top-notch. We purchased a 2013 Infiniti for my son- it was shipped free from Texas to Colorado where we could test drive it. Salesperson Jacori was fabulous to work with, not pushy at all. At one point I was contemplating a much more expensive 2017 soley for Bluetooth functionality and Jacori actually made good points about the value of the 2013 and did not try to talk me into a more expensive purchase. We took the car to the Infiniti dealer (Carmax has a 10 day no questions asked return policy) and there were a few minor fixes- called Carmax service, got in quickly and they fixed all issues as they had promised (free 90 day warranty). The service department even paid for my husband's Uber over to work after he dropped the car for service. Our regular car dealership that we have used for years (Schomp Subaru in Denver) doesn't even offer Uber vouchers anymore. I would 100% use CarMax again and recommend to others. read more

Car Max did me a huge favor today. They demonstrated very clearly that what they say means nothing. Good thing I found that out what liars they are before I gave them any money. I had an appointment for an appraisal, for them to make an offer on my car. I listened to their sales presentation, which consisted largely of promises. Their warranties protect you, yada yada yada. I was told to sit in the waiting area and it would be about 25 minutes. 25 minutes later the guy comes over and says it's going to be another hour to get an offer. Saturdays are busy, he says. Why do they make appointments on Saturday then? Did they suddenly get backed up in the 25 minutes I was waiting? Why didn't they tell me it was going to be an hour as soon as I arrived? The answer is that they are playing games with the public. Their financials are shaky, which shows that the public isn't as dumb as Car Max thinks are are. Overall, I had a good experience here. Andrei in sales helped me initially and was great to work with. No pressure or hassle. I sold a vehicle here and got $4k less than what I would have received if I had decided to sell private party but I knew that going into it. That part of the experience was good - no nonsense. Sadly, I returned the vehicle I ended up purchasing - within the 30 day window. Here's why: 1) got severely priced gouged; 10k to be exact. This was a 2020 with under 20k miles but dealers in the area are selling 2022 models for the same price. I hadn't planned on buying this particular model initially and admit I hadn't done enough research on pricing before I took the plunge to buy - I know they have a mark up but trusted that they wouldn't gouge me like this. 2) the handling/alignment seemed off and despite a 3rd party check at a local mechanic I didn't feel it was going to be reliable long term. I could not justify paying this price for a used vehicle that wasn't well-loved by its prior owners (it was leased) AND had not been 100% checked by Carmax before hitting the sales lot. The 3rd party dealer I took it to after purchase told me the air filters hadn't been replaced - just little details like that don't give me the warm fuzzies about Carmax's quality control. Finally, it's worth mentioning that there were about $1k worth of door dings/dents on the vehicle (small but noticeable) that they didn't bother to have removed before the sale. In closing, the staff are wonderful here. The store is nice inside & out and they have a great selection. But based on this experience, I won't be back ever again. read more

Purchased a used car here in late January. In less than 6 months, I've had to replace: - the oil sensor ($500) - all new tires due to low tire thread ($1000) - new battery ($250) Also, the passenger side window cannot be rolled down because it doesn't roll back up and the oil tray was full from the previous mechanic improperly changing the oil and putting the cap on / breaking some components. I've bought several used cars (elsewhere) and have never had $2k in repairs within the first two years, let alone 6 months. The car was handed out without a thorough clean and full tank. I bought a used car here in April. When I test drove it, the car was fine and I said yes I want to buy it. They send the car through the car wash while I'm doing the paperwork and it comes out with scratches all over the driver side window. Sales rep tells me no worries CarMax will replace the window and they will call me when the replacement part is ready. It's now been 2 months and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get anyone to pick up the phone to help me. The sales rep just keeps giving me the customer service number to call, and no one answers. Horrible follow up. Once you're out the door with a car they could care less what happens. There's something to be said about CarMax and their so called "Maxcare warranty"... They sell you on their policy (which is outsourced to 3rd party administrators so they take ZERO RESPONSIBILITY for when they deny your warranty claims!) touting this amazing coverage that states they'll cover any damages beyond regular maintenance/ ware /tare as covered, and all you'll have to pay is the deductible. Recently, i was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on. Alarmed, as anyone would be, i immediately pulled over and called for a ride while i arranged for an appointment at a Carmax care approved auto shop (which is required). Upon later diagnostics, they found the engine head gaskets needed to be replaced along with some of the spark plugs. The car shop provided an estimate, to which the Maxcare warranty company ASSURANT, sent out an adjustor to check in on. It was then DECIDED that they would not fully cover the repairs to my car based on the ASSUMPTION that the damages were incurred because "i didn't pull over right away" once it started to overheat. I tried calling their team multiple times to clarify that I DID PULL OVER as soon as i safely could, but they couldnt care less! No supervisors or decision-makers would even speak to me about so i could clarify. They had already made their decision on the claim, closed it out and wouldnt even give me the time of day because "the decision had already been made." And Carmax is backing it. TL;DR - they sell you on a bogus warranty and then find any reason to deny coverage and completely advertise their "amazing coverage" to be otherwise. It's false advertising! Not only will they find whatever reason they can to screw owners out of paying, but they wont even give you the time of day or let you speak with any supervisors or anyone making the decisions about it. Very frustrating experience unfortunately. Bought a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan from them back in November. Day after I drove it off the lot, my drivers side headlight goes out. I figured it was just a bulb, so I called to get it scheduled. Once they take it in for service, I'm informed that there are "aftermarket headlights that have been installed" and they won't be able to cover the payment through the warranty I purchased. It was also within the 90 day policy that CarMax has for any issues that arise. I inform them that the vehicle was sold to me that way, and that I would not have had time to install new headlights less than a day after buying the vehicle. They end up putting in a new bulb and it seems to be fixed. A week later, the passenger side light goes out. At this point I decide to take the car to an actual Volkswagen dealership, and after their inspection, they tell me that the wiring from the headlights (along with other parts) is bad and both of the headlights will have to be replaced. They also find other issues, gaskets that need to be replaced, an oil leak, and two of the shocks on my wheels in need of repair, and I am now looking at about $3000 dollars worth of repairs. CarMax has been unresponsive to the dealership as well regarding their calls about the warranty I am paying for. Very much DO NOT recommend purchasing a vehicle from this CarMax. read more

Carmax sold a hail damaged vehicle to my Son. It was not previously disclosed, and they did not take anything off for the damage. They said, " It's a used vehicle and the price is not negotiable". The price did not take into account the hail damage. It also has 2 chips in the windshield, but they did replace it. A dealer would not do this. A dealer would reduce the price. They also were very sneaky about it. The pictures were taken in such a way as to not show the hail damage as compared to similar vehicles pictures. The last correspondence was with their manager. My trade in was estimated at 1200 when I got they lowered it to 700 There were several problems with their assessment. #1 the young man who inspected my car spent about 2 minutes. He turned on the ignition, but didn't start the carr He went to the front of the car opened the hood wrote on his clipboard and went Inside. #2 he claimed there was fluid leaking, I have never had leak I just drove through slush on my way from the mountains. He claimed he heard a noise in the engine, totally wrong He never even started it. He mistook dirt from driving through slush for a dent. The manager was rude and unreasonable. I just sold our oldest (2002) vehicle to Car Max. We are buying a new vehicle with today's technology to replace it. A local dealer (who shall not be named) offered us a number right in the middle of the Kelly Blue Book (KBB), Trade In range. To keep them honest, we went to Car Max. After inspection, they offered us 50% more. Their offer was even 20% higher than KBB's Private Party range. It seemed too good to be true. I contacted the dealer to see if they would offer more. They would not. I rechecked what had been entered into KBB's info. Everything was accurate. Needless to say, we accepted Car Max's most generous offer. I understand the vehicle will now go to a wholesaler. I'm very curious what it will finally be listed for but I'll probably never know. Car Max's offer was about 40% of what we paid for it, 21 years ago. It was even higher than the top of KBB's, Private Party, Excellent range. How much will it be sold for? I have no idea. But as Bill Murray said in Meatballs - "It just doesn't matter." I would go to Car Max again, no hesitation. read more

Two different people inspected my truck, both looked to be in there 20s (not trying to bash age but you can't buy experience) and clueless to what they were looking at. Long story short they offered me $25,000 less than what I sold my truck to another dealer for. That's not a misprint 25k and it was to a dealer not a retail sale. I purchased a car from this location back in December 2022 after a friend recommended CarMax to me. It was probably my fault for not test driving the car first, but I had owned this same year, make, and model vehicle previously. So my first mistake was trusting the recommendation to CarMax and the second was purchasing a car without seeing it or test driving it first. When I tell you I've had issues with this car ever since... it's unbelievable. Within the first 90 days of owning the vehicle it started sputtering at red lights and when idle. I scheduled a service appointment with CarMax since they guarantee repairs for 90 days. Turns out it needed a WHOLE NEW ENGINE. I had a rental car for nearly a month while they replaced it. Then I had to bring my car back because the bumper was falling off. So they gave me a new rental car for several weeks while they supposedly replaced the bumper. Then right after the 90 day mark of owning the car the back up camera stopped working. And the car starting making grinding noises when I would brake. I called the manager of their service department and he said he would make it right by servicing the car and giving me a rental even though I was outside the 90 day window. I was grateful, but that did not last long. The back up camera is still working but the grinding/squealing sounds are back. I had another mechanic look at the brakes and rotors that CarMax supposedly replaced and they said they did NOT put new ones in. I don't know what they did with my car when they had it for 2-3 weeks, but they did not replace the brakes and rotors like they said they were going to. And my bumper is starting to detach on the front driver's side again so they lied about replacing that also. They just do the minimum work to get you out their door. I have had to replace the windshield wipers and tires since owning it, all at expensive of my own. And now I will probably have to replace the brakes, pads, and rotors as well. This place is very shady and sells cars that are not up to standard like they rave about. I would never recommend them to anyone. I ALMOST FORGOT. The night I bought this vehicle they sent me home with the wrong paperwork. I was sent home with the paperwork for the sale of a completely different vehicle purchased by someone else. This cars transmission has been rebuilt twice, once after I bought it in the last few months. After finding this out I returned this car during the 30 day trial period. No where is this information listed on their website ad for customers to consider when making a decision on purchasing this car. Called CarMax corporate about why this information is not listed on the service history and got nothing but double talk and said the car passed another CarMax inspection and was ready to sell. No transparency, the customer has a right to see all major service work that has been done on a car, especially work done by the Dealer selling it! The gentleman I worked with was very thorough, explained the whole process, and answered any questions I had. The appraisal amount I received was actually better than the one I received from the other dealership I went to, but unfortunately they didn't have the exact car I was looking for, so I decided not to trade my vehicle in with CarMax. We recently traded in my 2022 BMW X5 for a very lightly used Jeep Grand Cherokee L. We needed the larger vehicle and one that could handle Colorado winter driving conditions. I shopped at local dealerships for a new JGCL and got a couple offers on my mostly paid off X5. Not only did CarMax ship the perfect JCGL from Michigan for FREE, they also offered me $5k more than KBB on my X5. I took the JCGL for a 24-hour test drive and fell in love. They buying process was mostly done online and over text before arriving at the dealership. We were there for about an hour finishing up paperwork, then another 30 minutes or so waiting to sign documents. Then I drove my almost new JGCL home. Nightmarishly dreadful. Indescribably incompetent. Ceaselessly frustrating. Appallingly imbecilic. What else can I say? Bought a vehicle from them two weeks ago. Something is already wrong with the vehicle, which is interesting given that they're supposed to have a 125-point inspection (lol). I dropped off my vehicle for repair, and I asked for a loaner. I showed them my insurance card. I have full coverage. No problem, right? Wrong. They told me that wasn't good enough. They would have to call my insurance company -- at 7:45 PM -- to verify that I'm insured for a loaner. HUH????? If you have full coverage insurance, you're insured for a loaner. I've had loaner car several times -- including twice from a different CarMax on a different car we bought a few months ago -- and this has never been an issue. That's because the individual is covered, not the specific car. I explained this to them REPEATEDLY. My insurance company didn't even know how to address the question because it was such a remarkably stupid inquiry. I'm sure they don't get a lot of calls from car dealers asking whether a person is covered for a loan when the reality is that IF YOU HAVE FULLL COVERAGE INSURANCE, YOU'RE AUTOMATICALLY COVERED FOR A LOANER!!!! I spent nearly an hour there trying to get a loaner. After an unbelievably frustrating experience in which one CarMax employee gave me a more ridiculous answer than the previous one -- and, frankly, after a lot of yelling on my part, which is the level these people brought me to -- they finally relented and gave me a loaner. I'm never coming back to this dealership again, and I'm never buying from CarMax again. Unless you'd like to lose your temper and risk having a heart attack or stroke, stay away from CarMax. This location sucks! All the negative reviews are accurate. If you reach out to CarMax, expect to talk to a different person every-time. Most of the people you speak with on the phone aren't even at this location! I had a car transferred to this location. It took forever with no updates. I reached out and was told the reason it was taking so long was because it needed some repairs. I asked what repairs but they could not tell me. I was told to call back the following day at 12:01pm. When I asked why that specific time, the agent had no idea. When the car finally was ready, CarMax reached out and asked if I was interested in the express check out. I said yes. I was then told someone would follow up. When I spoke with Joe, he said he was too busy to do the express checkout but I could come in the following day and do the regular process which would take a couple of hours. I reached back out to the South Broadway location, explaining the situation, asking if someone else could help. I never heard back. I reached back out again on Monday. The consultant could not explain why Joe refused to do the express check out but offered to do it herself. I spent hours while at work doing the express check out by phone including CarMax running a credit check, uploading documentation, sending a selfie, etc. I reached back out to confirm if the car was going to be ready and I was told the consultant had only scheduled a test drive. The agent via chat told me the manager, Mike would call me. I received a call from another consultant named Dylan, not Mike. I then had to go through the entire process again, giving the same information again. I was then told CarMax needed to run my credit again because of multiple errors on their part. Running your credit multiple times negatively impacts your credit score! If purchasing a car is this complicated, I cannot imagine what it must be like if you have some sort of issue with your car, warranty issues, returns, etc. I ended up purchasing a brand new Subaru down the street without any issues. read more

No, it's not the best deal in town because an experienced shopper can use Craigslist or negotiate to buy a 2015 new car cheaper than the CarMax 2014 used version. For people not wanting to haggle, call the CarMax store and talk to a consultant over the phone. You could transfer a car in without stepping foot into the store. Sales people are paid on commission so make sure you only work with ONE consultant. When you contact multiple consultants they have to split the commission and have less incentive to provide you with good service. Avoid Saturdays because it's a zoo at dealerships. Sundays CO dealerships are closed. They have over 100 dealer locations around the country and it's pretty cool to have the ability to transfer any car to CO. You're not obligated to buy once it arrives, but you do lose the transfer fee. Two other CarMax locations are in Arvada and CO Springs and I believe they can transfer in state for free. If you're shopping new, I recommend Ralph Schomp Honda and Shortline Subaru. Email internet sales and agree on a final price quote instead of going to dealers and pay higher walk in price. Buy new dealership cars on the last hour of the day, last day of the week, last day of the month, and last day of the year to get special deals. Happy shopping. read more

CarMax failed to notify us that the Ford F-150 truck we were scheduled to purchase and pick up today was in fact not going to be sold to us. The truck was "damaged in transit" and won't sell to us. I understand things happen - but they were aware of the issue and didn't tell us they were no longer selling the truck. If they had notified us we could have made other arrangements for our house move. No phone call, no email - and when we asked why they didn't notify us they refused to answer. So now we have no truck for our planned move tomorrow. Never working with this CarMax location ever again. read more

I originally chose Carmax because I thought the process would be quick and easy. My car was stolen as I arrived to Denver, and I figured this would be the fastest way to fix the issue. Unfortunately, after ordering my car online, the car was sent without the title and 2 1/2 weeks later I still cannot buy my car. During this time, the agent assigned to my case quit, so I was reassigned to a different sales person. I went to test drive a different car since my ordered car did not arrive, and when I showed up the car's battery was dead. In annoyance I went to a local dealership and got the issue fixed immediately with a better price. Avoid Carmax at all costs. Check out your local alternatives! read more

UPDATE August 15, 2020: The hallmark of a great company is how they handle customers when there are problems. This is where Carmax has shown themselves to be truly outstanding. They not only listened to my concerns, they put things right. They helped me with the unexpected repairs by reimbursing sizable costs. I am incredibly grateful and would definitely purchase another car from them in the future. Special thanks to Nichol Green for making this happen. ------------------------------------------- I purchased my 2011 Volvo XC60 last September for @$15K. Since then, the Volvo has required major repairs, beginning with a new catalytic converter and sensors ($4,100 at Volvo) because it can't pass a smog test. Now it's a loose oil drip pan.I had to replace engine and cabin filters that were not replaced at my last service at your Littleton location in March. There is a loose connection to the battery sensor that needs to be replaced. The doors filled with water when it raI've had the battery tested numerous times and it's fine so I know that the battery itself isn't the problem. I'm dreading what will happen next.
