It's not often that you can give a car dealer a 5 star review but I'm now a big fan of this company. You know the usual runaround you get when you try to buy, trade or sell a car to car dealers. The garbage tactics they use can be so tiring... and so OLD SCHOOL if CarMax is the new way to buy/trade/ or sell a car. Although I've purchased and sold many cars, this was my first dealings with CarMax and it was unlike any "dealer" experience I've ever had. We saw a car for sale online from a CarMax store in Tampa, FL that was exactly what we were looking for. We had a choice to drive to Tampa (a 3 1/2 hour drive) or have CarMax ship the car for $100 to our local Jensen Beach, FL store. We hesitantly chose to pay the fee. A nice touch, the company kept us in the loop on when the car shipped, arrived and was ready for viewing. We stopped in, viewed, provided our drivers license and drove the car and found it to be everything the ad stated. We decide to buy the car on the spot. Here's where it gets interesting. Unlike car dealerships, there was no haggling, hand offs to the finance manager, hard sells, etc that are the usual games car dealers play. Simply here's our price, take her out, if you like the car, sign here. If not, check around, compare prices, (which we had done previously and their price was on the low end of all we saw) and if you like it, sign here. Your new (used) car will be ready for you in a few minutes (which it was)! Have a trade in (which we did)? Great let's look at it, take some pictures and here's our offer (good for 7 days at any CarMax store). End result we traded in our old used car and got our new (used) car in one painless transaction! THE COMPARISON: This is where CarMax really stands out... We also had a car that we wanted to sell straight up. It was a Chevy Equinox that had only 4,000 miles on it. We knew that because of its like new condition and really low mileage, it would be pretty desirable and bring a good price. We decided to first, get a bid from Wallace Chevrolet in Stuart, Fl. Clearly the used car manager did not think the great condition or low mileage was important. After going through all the typical sales garbage they throw at you.... "How much do you want for the car?" (Dumb question that has no relation to how much they'll pay). "The new model is redesigned so there's not much call for this year" (you can stop the set up and just give me the price you'll pay)! "White's not really a good color" (BS, this is Florida, do I look like I was born yesterday?) "This is the best price you'll get anywhere but, it's only good for 24 hours" (Right dude!). After all the typical car dealer garbage laid on us, they gave us a price of $23,500. What was Carmax's (no bs) good for 7 days price? $25,000. Guess who now owns our Chevy Equinox? You bet... CarMax! Why anyone would go to a dealer to sell/trade or buy a used car is beyond me. read more

Carmax offered me $70,000 for a car I was selling. Meanwhile I sold the car for close to $90,000, which is a big difference. This leads me to believe that Carmax is not the place to buy or sell any kind of automobile from.. Actually, I think they are nothing but low-ball experts. To make a long story short, I wanted to sell my 2019 Hyundai Kona. I went online to the CarMax website and I saw that I could get an online offer for my car. The online offer was very good so I headed over to CarMax. It was a very good experience and they did in fact honor their online offer. Done before we got started, based on the negative reviews we're seeing on multiple other sites from unhappy CarMax customers. We were interested in a typically over-priced 8 year old Audi (over $30 K including tax) and ready to drive over to test drive, BUT even after multiple "asks" CarMax refused to provided a CarFax report on the vehicle. The Experian Autocheck report they DO provide had ZERO service records listed over the 8-year life of the car...as well as little else on the car history. When asked about the inspections/service CarMax DID provide pre-sale, (supposedly including their "125-point inspection and reconditioning process") they reported ...........wait for it.......they did an oil change. Our long experience (as well as Edmunds reviews) shows that with a CarFax report (vs Experian's Autocheck) you are more likely to get documentation of previous service and routine maintenance visits, as well as possible evidence of previous problem areas of the car that needed service....all important when buying an 8 Y.O, overpriced vehicle. Car Max's refusal on this very simple request told us everything we needed to know about dealing with this used car business. They understand, and their experience tells them, that an informed buyer is a detriment to re-selling their used cars. That was enough for us. read more

A total lack of UPPER management @ the Jenson Beach location. Took over 3 days of chaos in communication & 3 hours at dealership to buy & pay cash for a $40,000 vehicle. Insane! I grew up in the automotive industry as our family & my father have owned or general management of multi dealerships. I was the #1 Dodge Truck Salesman in the country & have master status with Nissan & Toyota. So, take to heart my review! Carmax said they would deliver my vehicle which never happened. We stopped in to CarMax in Jensen a few days ago. We met a very nice salesperson. So we figured we'd call back today to see about getting an appraisal on a vehicle we would trade in. We were greeted by a very nice receptionist. We were then handed off to, I would have to think he is a car or vehicle appraiser? He was one of those people that clearly knew everything. Really arrogant and never offered to assist us when we stated what we were looking for. Maybe sales is not his job but he could have handed us off to a salesperson. Instead he said if you find anything onlinecc come back. He also put a note about our vehicle having been repainted on the notes. Our vehicle has NEVER been repainted or even touched up. So clearly he is not the expert he thinks he is. We have bought from CarMax before, and were very excited about having one in our area, but after this experience we will just drive to another CarMax location rather one right in our area. read more

Terrible experience filled with misinformation and no room for negotiation. They based their "take it or leave it" appraisal/offer on 2 owners and an accident with frame damage - neither of these things are true. The car was purchased new from the manufacturer dealer by my wife and never had frame damage, only small body damage from a bump in a parking lot. So understand they will choose to invent lies to further inflate their massive profit margins. The worse news for buyers is that they were offering the same vehicle, in the same year on their own website with twice the miles for more than 3 times what they offered me. This is a public company with a traded stock so it's quite clear they do not care about customers, only shareholders. You're better off at a proper car dealership- you'll get better prices that can b negotiated on superior quality vehicles! Best thing I can say is that this Jensen Beach location is shiny and new. They can afford it with their 400% profit margins though, so don't worry. read more

After calling ahead to verify they could accommodate me, I went in for an appraisal and was told there would be a 40 minute wait before someone could help me. I was told that I could do this online and it would only take two minutes if I preferred to do that instead. I needed a print out of my appraisal so I chose to wait and after waiting for 30 minutes one of the managers walked outside to tell me that I needed to go online and do the appraisal because he had four guys that needed to go to lunch and it was going to be an even longer extended wait time before anyone could help me because they needed to take lunch first. The manager then readvised me that I could go online to start the appraisal process put in all of my information take pictures of my car but then I would still have to wait for his guys to come back from lunch for them to then take my car back to verify that everything I submitted was correct to then provide me with the updated appraisal. Meanwhile multiple staff were chatting amongst each other throughout the lobby for the duration of my waiting period. I will not be returning. read more

Without a doubt the absolute worst customer service in the history of customer service... I made an appointment one week ago to bring my car in for service as I had a maintenance required light coming on. I even made arrangements to bring the vehicle in a day early and leave it so that they could get to it first thing in the morning. When I showed up at the service desk it was empty and I waited 10 minutes for someone to help me. A young man came over and asked me my name and phone number. He couldn't get in the computer and had to go get a young lady to help him. She couldn't get into the computer either, and a third person finally came over and said he would take care of it. The third person found my appointment and proceeded to tell me that I was scheduled for service at the Carmax in Doral Florida instead of the Carmax store in Jensen Beach. Now this was absolutely idiotic considering Doral is 2 1/2 hours away and the Carmax store in Jensen Beach where I purchased the vehicle is literally 10 minutes away. The man told me he was going to go back and talk to the service technicians to see if they could get me in either this afternoon or tomorrow morning. He left me standing there for close to 15 minutes, when he finally came back he told me he could get me in 1 week from today.... This was even more moronic than all of the other nonsense leading up to this point and I thought it was so insulting that I turned and walked out, never to return for any reason. I recently purchased a vehicle, I started the process online and found the car that I wanted and schedule an appointment for the vehicle. Upon arrival and after test driving I noticed some damage on the vehicle that was not listed on the website so I pointed this out to the salesman, Mathew, to which I was told it would be fully repaired or replaced. I scheduled an appointment to have the work done, call the morning of my appointment to confirm and after arriving was told that no one would be there to repair my vehicle that I would have to reschedule for next week. This is fine and understandable however after dropping my vehicle off to have the repairs done a second time, upon picking it up the repairs were not done properly or fully repaired as promised. The manager at the time told me it was repaired to their standards and there was nothing more they would do for me even though I was promised for the vehicle to be fully repaired and not partially. I've done business with CarMax in the past this will be the fourth transaction of vehicles I have done with Carmax and will be my last. Bought a Hyundai Santa Fe at CarMax in Jensen yesterday. Salesman seemed great, not responsible for company policy and practices. What annoyed me, in addition to almost 3 hours ridiculously delayed to pay cash for a no-haggle car, was being given only one remote key (plus one traditional non-electronic key). Since my wife and I are to use the car jointly, as most couples, we need two normal electronic keys. This was a surprise upon taking possession. A bigger surprise today is that the electronic keys are inconvenient to get, and seriously expensive. The car is a 2018 off-rental. They certainly received two keys...new car, one owner. You might think they retain the 2nd key for repo purposes, but I paid the car in full. No repo possible. After spending a small fortune on a car and losing an afternoon to a simple purchase, you don't want to walk out the door with, "surprise," there's one more huge inconvenience and hefty expense. read more
