My experience buying a car from this Carmax was a mixed bag to be sure. This isn't my first time buying through a Carmax. It's a fine option for a person who doesn't really need to be "sold" a car, rather someone who has done all their own research on what they want to buy, has a price in mind, and just wants to go get it without too much hassle. There are some advantages to buying here, like the ability to bring it back within 10 days for a full refund, and not having to haggle. If you like the price, you buy the car, if you don't, you move on. Disadvantages of course, are pretty much that the salesman is not super motivated to sell you a car, and is therefore not going to be very knowledgeable about whatever car you roll up about and want to look at. This is fine for me, I knew what I wanted, and I got it. It wasn't without difficulty however. The specific car I wanted had to come in from Georgia, which I paid a transfer fee for. It was supposed to take 3-5 days, it ended up being over 2 weeks. This left us short a car for awhile, as we had already given up the other car based on their timeline. They did refund the transfer fee, so that made it partially right, but I say this to not take their word on their timelines. My second complaint, is that the transaction took WAY TOO LONG inside Carmax, especially given I had already filled out most paperwork in advance. The person helping us seemed pretty new, and she kept having to get up and ask other associates questions. She also was not very observant, we were pointing out things on the screen that she was missing. She really should have had someone looking over her shoulder to help, as she was not ready to be on her own. Finally, it's a good thing I advocated for myself and knew to check for certain things. Our new car is a plug in hybrid, and the car was supposed to come with a charging cable. It was not in the car anywhere, but with a little persistence they gave me one from their service center. Carmax does do a thorough inspection on the cars they sell, and actually, the independent shop I brought the car to said they've not had many problems with Carmax missing things. In my case that held true, their Volvo certified mechanic found nothing wrong with my car mechanically, and said it appears to have been well maintained and serviced. He did find a very small windshield chip, which Carmax fixed free of charge without any complaint. Would I buy another car from Carmax? I would, but I am someone who just needs someone to facilitate the transaction, I'm savvy enough to know the car on my own and do my own research. I wouldn't recommend Carmax as a place for the inexperienced buyer. read more

Purchased a truck. It was back at the dealer 6 times in the first 6 weeks for a check engine light. Finally sent it to a dealer to get it fixed. Check engine light was fixed but still has the trans slip. Took it to a different garage and they felt the issue right away. Currently waiting to see what the carmax warranty wants to do to resolve the issue. Not sure a dealer can have a car for 6 weeks and not feel the trans slip and you take it to a separate garage and they notice it right away. read more

Have heard good things from a couple people about carmax, so while shopping for a car, we decided to stop in and see what they could offer. It's certainly different than other dealerships, but lack of information seems to be their specialty. The "salesperson" helping us, didn't seem to know much about cars in general, any questions we asked about cars we were interested in, she had to look up, and if she couldn't find it, then she didn't know, and couldn't be bothered to ask anyone else. One car we liked, noted damage from a previous accident, and despite claiming to offer a free history report yet she couldn't tell us any details and said they don't offer the CarFax, but we could pay to get the details (!!), no a very honest or transparent business model. When it came to taking a test drive the salesperson just gave us the keys and told us to go drive it. Other dealerships we visited the salesperson rode with us, pointed out features and details of the car...the whole thing was just very awkward. The only warranty they offer with cars is a 90 limited warranty. Purchased a car from their whole sale lot. In your contract with Carmax you can return any car in 10 days if there's problems. The car had issues within an hour from pulling off the lot. We took the car back the very next morning. We were told they would send the check to our bank for the loan we got. This was in November. It is now January, no check has been sent to my bank and we are paying on a loan for a car we don't even have. They claim this issue is on a corporate level and we have to wait to see what corporates response says. This is the worse customer service i've ever experienced. There is no reason my bank should not have the check almost 2 months after returning the vehicle. I've been told they have a history of poor customer service and I now see why. This Carmax in Greensboro is a hot mess! I tried for 3 weeks to sell my car to them. I was given incorrect information by the business office and a sales rep on 3 different occasions. They have a lot of staff but it's apparent they are not being trained properly by the company. I was very disappointed because my father had a great experience with these guys which is why I went there in the first place. They offered me the lowest price they could which I was okay with at first until they couldn't decide on what was needed regarding a power of attorney. Again, 3 different answers, ridiculous! It was suggested that I give Carvana a try. So glad I did. They offered me $2600 more than Carmax and all of the transaction was done online with 1 visit from a rep. Gotta step up your game, Carmax!! My husband and I went to Carmax Friday June 20 and they were unhelpful. The first sales guy put us out there looking at cars and went back in. When we came back, he blew us off (abandoned us) so we talked to a sales rep named "Bob". We were preapproved by our credit union and he said "We don't like to work with them" and tried to get us to finance with Carmax itself but he said it would be slightly higher and he refused to see about Toyotas that we really wanted. He actually even said we aren't getting one and he would walk away from us too! What kind of salesman does that?! He then said I got other people to see. When we were leaving he was just sitting on his butt talking to coworkers. They don't want anything to do with you unless you got straight up cash or will finance with them. They don't even know that a vin number is not only on dash but on chassis in door. They lie about everything , like putting your car up for sale , online , give price then when u show up , cars in great shape , they give you excuses. This excuse was the vin number faded on dash. I have always used Carmax. I never really know what i want when i need a newer car so i can walk around there lot and drive multiple vehicles before deciding . On one occasion i messed up and showed up home with a minivan for the wife. What was i thinking? I thought i would never sleep in the bed again ! they give you 7 days to change your mind and i did. No hassles, i took the wife this time and she picked what she wanted. Yes you may pay a few hundred more but i like the no dickering concept. I also like that they will purchase your car. I have sold 2 cars to them and it was easy, i put my info on there website and it gave me a purchase price which was honored both times. I don't usually shop at car places. CarMax, like most other car stores, charges a convenience fee. And it's nothing small. There is another place that does not charge this but usually destination car places do. The fee doesn't actually pay for anything, as far as I know. But aside from that fee, the people seem nice, though, when I went there, I was kind of asked what I wanted in a car, and that was it. They didn't even help me when I went outside. I got no help... and there must have been at least 8 sales people there. That said, I wasn't completely put off. And they did have a large selection. read more

Took 3 or 4 trips to fix an oil leak. Less than a year later same problem is reoccurring. Car max will not fix issue due to mileage being over 12000 Miles from original issue. Absolutely the worst customer service EVER! Don't buy a car from a company who treats customers like total sht after the sale. Once they have your money, they don't give 1 fk about you or anything you say. They transfer you all over the place, because no one knows wth is going on. So they don't care when you call in because all the calls don't go directly to the store, first you have to talk to a bitchy woman or asshole man who is pissed at life and hate their job. my retired parents had a car brought to this Carmax. not to mention you have to PAY Carmax to just look at it because they had to get it from another Carmax. let's make a note here and understand ..... so they are wanting to purchase a car from this lot and your charging them to just bring over for CARMAX and can make money. ok they were fine with that ---so they take the car for 24 hours just to make sure it's ok. when they did the transmission was very jerky. we let their normal mechanic look at it and ride with them. he said, something for sure going on. I wouldnt buy this car. so my dad returned it the next day. They had every intention to purchase UNTIL they kept over night and drove. when he took it back the next day. he told them why he wasn't going to get it. they refuse to even give half back on the $175 of a messed up vehicle. if they would have at least gave my parents half back they would have maybe thought to keep shopping there. that is very poor customer service and for sure a way not to get a customer to come back. never again will I nor my parents do business with this Carmax. they got a beautiful car at Jerry Hunt Supercenter. great customer service I recommend to anyone looking for a good vehicle. They lowball your trade in and will not go up on their offer, but they want their asking price and will not come down at all. Very rude sales people and management. Try to have your car serviced in any other places by all means. But if you must have your car serviced here, make sure 1. Write down your current milage 2. Ask for the specific test drive duration and route 3. Write down the engine elapse time, and your MPG if possible 4. Take all of your changes out of the car 5. Write down the item 1 and 3 at the time of picking up the vehicle and verify the differences. This information is more important to you if you have a fun performance car. read more

When I visited this Carmax location, I handed them an appraisal from the Nashville, TN location and they sent me directly to the buyer's office without looking at it. The Nashville branch had appraised my vehicle on Friday, December 2, 2011. Since it was Monday, December 5, 2011, it was within the 7 days and I had hoped to get the $10,000 Nashville offered me (which was also the same as the $10,000 the San Diego Carmax offered me on November 25, 2011)s. When I reached the buyer's office, they were nice. However, when the woman read it closely, she made a face and said they would have to reappraise the vehicle because it was appraised in Nashville, which was a different region. I said she really didn't because it says on the appraisal it is good at "all Carmax locations." I asked to speak to her supervisor and the supervisor used some different terminology and said they needed to examine the vehicle and enter the information into the computer. A representative named Willie walked up to me and we walked to his cubicle and he was very nice. I was a little emotional because I wanted and needed this $10,000 right away. I was flying home to San Diego the very next day. I owed $5600 on the vehicle, so I was expecting Carmax to pay the Ford Motor Credit Company and hand me a bank draft check for $4400. I had totally cleaned the car inside and out and had it washed. It was in the same condition it was in San Diego and the same condition it was in Nashville. Willie was nice and because I was a little boisterous, I offered him an apology and explained my situation to him. I had spent five and a half days driving across the country to see my sick, 84 year old grandma in a nursing home in Yadkinville, North Carolina. I thought she was on her death bed, but she seems to be doing much better now and even though she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia (according to two of her kids), she was amazingly sharp as I sat beside her bed and talked to her for three days. I also explained to him how I needed this money in order to pay for my luggage fee on Delta Airlines and my rental car when I returned to San Diego. He listened and was very nice and sympathetic. I'm always impressed when people who have nothing to do with your situation actually listen and care and I felt Willie did and I also felt that he put up with me; both great qualities! After pacing around a little bit and having a few polite conversations with some of the people who worked there (e.g. Willie gave me the number for a taxi, another man allowed me to use the only computer there with internet access and a couple of others made cordial, small talk with me), Willie handed me a $10,000 appraisal! I was very thankful and excited. He acted like it was no big thing, in a cool, professional manner and I was stoked and I told him I didn't take anything for granted. About 20 minutes later, Carmax handed me a check for about $4,400! I took this check and deposited it in the Wells Fargo ATM machine at the Four Seasons shopping mall in Greensboro. I use Wells Fargo and so do they (although the check read "Wachovia", which was acquired by Wells Fargo). Since I knew my bank was connected to their bank well in advance, I had hoped the funds would be available quickly. To my satisfaction, the entire $4,400 was available for withdrawal when I checked my balance in the Atlanta airport in the morning! I highly recommend this Carmax location and Carmax in general. This is a top notch company with exceptional employees. They offer good money for vehicles and I'd definitely do business with them, again. I would recommend they mention something about their appraisals being contingent on the region, if they want to insist on that. However, in the end, their offer didn't change, so I was satisfied. I enjoyed the free coffee and purified water in all three of the locations I visited. They were all clean looking and the employees were nice and nothing like stereotypical, used car salespeople. Two thumbs up! The only other thing I would recommend is they offer free wi-fi in their waiting room. read more

I will always purchase cars for myself, my company, and family through CarMax. Here's why: 1) Experience My expectations were exceeded based on the people at CarMax, the product and the car I received, as well as the convenient process full of options during my buying experience. While it is convenient for consumers to put holds on vehicles online with the click of a button, it can be disappointing to a buyer like myself who is ready to buy same day. I found two Mercedes SUV's I wanted online, went in and saw them in the lot, and just as we went to test drive each one, they were discovered to be transferred and/or held by online shoppers. I needed a car and renting was out of the question, so I settled for my 3rd choice and bought it (BMW). The 5-day option helped me try the BMW which was my first time buying one (Previously owned 3 back to back Mercedes). I noticed the same Mercedes I wanted originally appeared (3 days into my purchase) because the online customer just cancelled the order. The combo of not being fully satisfied with the BMW, the 5 day return guarantee, and now the original car I wanted being returned, I called in for an appointment, and within 2 hours returned my BMW and left with the original Mercedes SUV I wanted. Lastly, I noticed the push button was not in the car when I left, and instead I had to use the key in the ignition (can't believe I had to reverse technology :) JK). I called in, my sales rep immediately ordered the part from Mercedes and called me multiple times to ensure I was satisfied. 2) CarMax Staff Dave was my primary sales rep who assisted me. He was such a pleasure to work with- he was polite, professional, listened carefully, and he was thorough with every piece of communication, which was a lot, because I asked a lot of questions. Dave was personable- and, he clearly comes from a strong business background and I believe he retired from a great company in a senior leadership role as well as military service- Dave simply enjoys his job, and that type of pride and engagement from any employee is invaluable. Katie was an additional sales rep who assisted me early on, and at one point she had another customer so I was transferred to Dave, all very professionally without a hiccup in the process. Katie was as polite as can be, and like Dave, she listened to every bit of my concerns, helped me test drive multiple cars, and even spent additional time searching different locations for the perfect car once my initial pick became unavailable. Her patience, customer service, and connectedness with customers was truly impressive. If they are not already, both Dave and Katie should be involved with HR and training teams to mentor and onboard team members in service and sales. Lastly, a shout out to the business office- they are well trained and great at what they do. After the sales staff finalized the car terms, the business office conducted the signatures and admin portion which I did twice because of the two different cars. Apologies on the name spelling if it's inaccurate, but I believe I worked with a young lady named Akua, and she was exceptional. She connected well, moved efficiently and communicated great, and she was as friendly as can be while doing the boring part of paperwork :) 3) Overall Rating At the end of the day, people matter most. CarMax is a great business model and their products and processes are among the best in the industry. However, none of that matters without the right people who can execute the processes and deliver results. Initially I went to Crown Honda and they were trying to give me a 2016 Sentra with almost 40K miles for about the same price I got at CarMax for a 2019 Sentra with only 964 miles! You do the math. I'm so glad I walked out of there and took my business to CarMax. I went to this store on Friday the 5th. Everything went well from the online inquiry to the actual transaction. The salesperson, Rasaan was great. He did everything to help me. The lady processing paperwork was great. Although it was a good deal, my inner spirit was telling me to go back to the dealership who had been working with me for the last six years. They actually gave me a much better deal that I could not refuse. When I went back to Carmax to return the vehicle, that's when things went sour. Unfortunately, due to one person, my experience at carmax was ruined. When I asked a sales manager, older white guy with a casual white golf shirt on at the front area of main entrance of store room about returning car, he was very cocky and rude. I will never forget his face though I didn't get his name. His demeanor was totally unacceptable. I did what I had to do in returning vehicle. I will not deal with this store again. Everyone else on the other hand was professional. The lady who processed my return admitted that the atmosphere at the front is different from the back. CarMax makes it super easy to either buy or sell cars. I just sold one there, and it took less than an hour. The first thing they do is appraise it. That took less than 30 minutes, and they offered me right in the middle of the range I was looking for. I had checked out Kelly Blue Book for my car's value, so was ready to accept anything within the range they had given me. The offer is good for 7 days, so you have a little bit of time to think about it, or sell it some other way if you think you can get more. I didn't have the title yet the first time they appraised it, so by the time I did that the 7 days had expired, and I had about 500 more miles on it. Went back and had it reappraised, and they came back with the same offer again. I took it and was out of there with a bank draft (deposit only) within another 20 minutes. Easy peasy! read more
