Purchased a pick up truck from the Bristol TN Carmax in November 2024 after searching their website for months to find the exact vehicle I wanted. Absolutely no issues. The vehicle was as advertised. Vehicle and salesman were waiting for me ahead of my appointment. Was also updated by Carmax via text message about my appointment times and the required documentation that I needed to have ready. The transaction was a smooth as I've ever experienced buying many vehicles from traditional dealerships over the decades. No pressure at all to buy, unlike traditional dealerships where you get pushed constantly. Carmax lets you input most if not all of the required information online ahead of time prior to your scheduled visit- this can be done at your home computer, and I even uploaded some documents with a mobile device. The salesman and staff were very honest and helpful during the process, snd help me close the deal smoothly. If you can input your documents online ahead of time and also bring all the required correct, accurate, and up-to-date information with you, you should have no issues with the purchase process. I live out of state and they had the correct out-of-state paperwork there ready to fill out, and even had plates and stickers at the dealership so I could drive it home out of TN. I was in and out of there in less than two hours. I suspect many of the negative reviews come from people who do not have the correct paperwork or documentation, or do not have their finances in order prior to visiting the dealership. CarMax took the fear of buying a car away and replaced it with a very easy, laid bad experience. I did my homework online as I usually do when looking for a car, and found the one I wanted. It was located in Sanford, FL but CarMax arranged for the car to be shipped to Bristol for my viewing before any decisions were made. The car seemed perfect and I decided on buying it, and that's when the anxiety of dealing with a dealership sat in, but the whole process was painless, and went by very smoothly. Amazing place great people we walked in to buy a 2018 Nissan when we got there the 2018 was already sold but they had a 2019 they just pulled on the lot drove the car for about 25 min came back did the paper work and left same day with the car we have only had one issue and that was the battery had a dead cell so it would die after being turned off we called them and they said bring the car and we will change the battery at no cost best place I've seen around to buy a car only thing I would recommend is they hire more sales people read more

I have now bought 2 cars from them and the first is a civic which is still running great (2013) and this last one is a 2019 Lincoln MKC which I love but have only had it a year and my engine light is on. I purchased the Caremax Warranty and have been let down once as the part that needed to be fixed was considered trim which conveniently NOT covered with bumper to bumper warranty. I am currently awaiting an appointment to get this issue looked at but my husband is concerned that this won't be covered either. So until this is either confirmed or denied by Carmax I am only giving a 3. Will return with update as so far the follow up with their Caremax package has been sorely lacking and at this point I WOULD NOT recommend adding this to your purchase of any vehicle they sell. Might I add that some of their salesmen are way too eager when buying but then you go in afterwards for some after care issues and they act like they can't be bothered to stop and ask if customer needs assist with anything. Horrible experience! I have been buying cars from Carmax for over 20 years and always had a great experience. I moved from Miami and need to trade my car and thought I would go to them again. First, it took me over one day to reach a person on the phone. Then when I did, the person was rude and short with all answers. I called again and spoke with someone new and got the same results. The offers were ridiculous I was given zero options. They could not give me any answers normally asked when purchasing a car. The rep explained that I was calling a call center which I why their service was so bad. On top of that, my credit score has now gone done...thanks Carmax, if I had known I was talking to a call center I would not have even started with you. read more

We have used CarMax in Plano, Texas for years, so when we had a vehicle to sell, we found CarMax in Bristol. We made an appointment to have our car appraised and I must say, the process was great. We were greeted right on time, which started our experience out well. They have streamlined their appraisal process, which is now done "touchless." They took multiple pictures of the exterior, undercarriage and interior, and then a video of the car running. The pictures and video were then uploaded to a central location. We had our appraisal in less than 10 minutes. We accepted the offer they made us, which we thought was quite fair. The entire process from start to finish took less than an hour and we were on our way, check in hand. The young man that helped us, Brad, was extremely nice and helpful. I stopped by to look at some used pick ups. While walking around inside, I ran into a manager reprimanding an employee, I believe to be a mechanic there. I stood around the corner while this manager humiliated and degraded the employee. Extremely unprofessional. Speaking to an employee in such a manner is inexcusable, period. I felt badly for the employee being humiliated like that out in the open. I won't do business with a business that treats their employees like that. read more

I stayed on the phone with a carmax associate for literally every bit of 6 hours off and on the other day, she basically told me that I got approved for a vehicle and assured me I would be getting the car that I had picked out. I got down there after a 2 hour drive and they ended up not helping me because they had put most of my information that I had given them over the phone the day prior MULTIPLE times wrong, and I was clearly upset because they had got my hopes up and I had drove for 2 hours to get there, the guy that was helping me basically just said we can't help ya. If CarMax makes a mistake, they'll jump through hoops to make it right. They sold me a SUV that supposedly had 4 wheel drive. All the paperwork depicted this. After they realized their mistake, they for the same price got me the exact same SUV with 4 wheel drive, Navigation & all Leather plus they put New Michelin Tires on it, though it only had 6 thousand miles, along with a 5 year 125 thousand miles CarMax Bumper to Bumper Warranty. The initial purchasing experience was great. The young man, who is now a manager, was quick, efficient, and knowledgeable . The vehicle finally arrived after about 5 weeks. We set up an appointment and were told it would take 30 minutes. Two and a half hours later we got it our car. We were told during the wait they were detailing the vehicle and getting it ready. Th e car had NOT been cleaned. In fact, there was mud caked into the window area in the lift gate. This wasn't noticed until we raised the window . The car was dirty all over but the caked on dirt was horrible. The young lady who helped us was newish. She tried but she was NOT ready to do a close on her own. Thus, the 2 1/2 hours it took to close the deal. Right now, I doubt we will ever purchase from CarMax again read more

The car buying experience was alright. However the mechanical department is awful. My car needed repairs so I brought it back to the Bristol, TN location. The mechanic was very rude. He refused to answer any questions about my car, said the car would have to be "outsourced" for repair, and kept talking over me. Overall a mediocre experience in the end but took a long time to get there. My son and I came in and were looking at the cars on the lot. He is 19 years old and wanted to share the car buying experience with him. The salesperson contacted us and we test drove a car and was ready to purchase. When we sat down to do the loan, the salesperson stated that we both had to be on the loan. I was concerned but agreed. The salesperson typed all of my information in and was making a lot of mistakes that I had to correct. I didn't realize it but the salesperson had entered my salary as hourly in the bi-weekly box. So it made it look like I worked one hour in two weeks time. Also, my son was entered into the mix and he has no credit established. Needless to say, the apr was over 10% and shot the payment over the top. Keep in mind that I have an 800 credit score. I then asked the salesperson if I could purchase the car with just me on the loan and she said no that we would both have to be on the loan. This is the FIRST and ONLY time that I have been refused to purchase a car. My son and I were trying to figure out what happened because the salesperson had stonewalled us. The other factor is that when I was on the phone trying to get my insurance cost for the vehicle and texting my wife stating that something doesn't seem right, the salesperson was shoving the keyboard in front of me tapping on it trying to get me to put my information in the computer faster. What made my decision to leave and return another day is when she said "you know were closed right?" When I returned and got another salesperson, I had to jump through some hoops to clear up what the previous salesperson had done and had stated in the computer notes. In the end, the store manager had to get involved and I was made to take some weird fraud test that I passed with flying colors. I honestly felt like I was being interrogated. The transaction finally went through with only myself on the loan and a 5.9% apr. Funny how one salesperson can mess up a deal and muddy the waters! read more

There was no requirement to purchase the car until I looked it over. The car was as good as I had hoped. I made the purchase took less than half hour once I decided to commit. Fast forward four months, hard shifting, replaced spark plugs; fast forward four more months, suspension knocking, replaced components; fast forward one more month, power steering assist failure (no power steering whatsoever, impossible to steer), car sitting in driveway and un-drivable.
