Not one but TWO bad experiences. One when I was car shopping. The representative was curt and short tempered with my questions. Wouldn't even discuss the car I was interested in until I provided information on my car. I wasn't even trading my car. Second was with my elderly mother. She made an appointment to see a vehicle. The associate was completely uninformed on any specs on the vehicle. I asked them to pull the vehicle up because of Mom's limited mobility. Despite her limited mobility, we we're still only allowed 20 minutes with the vehicle before he needed to take the car back. Mom was also concerned with how she felt riding in the passenger seat, since she's 80. We were counted at one customer, so I wasn't allowed to drive her as a passenger. She tried to explain why to the associate, but that's the rules. But Wait... There's more. The associates were goofing off, being loud (mother had a hard time hearing the associate, although he said "no" or I don't know" to everything she asked) and we're completely disrespectful of her time. One could have pulled up the car while we were talking with the associate. I'm really going easy here, truly, I can't explain it all. I would expect the associate to research a little on the car he's expected to show on a schedule appointment. We're shown more kindness and respect from a hostess at a busy restaurant. Too bad CarMax. She was going to pay cash. We won't be back. read more

I went in yesterday to sell my old car. De'Monte met me at the door to check me in. They were SOOOOO NICE and welcoming. Could not have asked for a friendlier person as my initial in-person experience. I immediately felt like a member of the CarMax community. Only took a few minutes before Andrew was available to help me. They informed me that it would be more advantageous for me to wait to sell my car until my new car had actually arrived (it is being shipped in from another location) - or I would miss out on $112.00 in tax savings. I was happy to come back, as $112.00 is a lot of money! I appreciated Andrew looking out for me. You don't get this type of hands-on individual service at typical dealerships. They have excellent customer service! I've returned a vehicle to them under their 30 day 1500 mile guarantee and it went quickly, smoothly, and without issue. Ive transferred a few vehicles and I've got my transfer fee back if the vehicle had problems I didn't think were worth asking carmax to fix. I bought a different vehicle not long after returning the first and I decided to keep it. It runs and drives smooth and everything works great. Carmax's quality of used vehicles is like any other dealership's, excluding awful curb stoner dealerships of course. Carmax's 100 point something inspection is also about as good as any other dealership's; which is mostly marketing and fake. The difference between Carmax and other dealerships is Carmax will fix the things the right way when you or your mechanic, who does a PPI, finds something wrong with the vehicle, while other dealerships will brush it off as it's a used car, sell it as-is, or do a low quality job with repairs. I've found Carmax to be as expensive as other car dealerships, whom usually will lower their price about $1000, unlike the no haggle Carmax, but what you get with Carmax is the 30 day money back guarantee, the 90 day warranty, and excellent customer service. Their maxcare warranty is probably the best "third-party" as in "non-dealer" warranty in the industry given that it can be used at carmax and other participating shops, but I would pass on it because leading consumer reporting agencies have run the numbers and it doesn't benefit us consumers financially in the long run. Lastly, Carmax has the best app/website available for searching for vehicles out of the many I've used. I'd buy a vehicle from Carmax again and I hope the next time I do the experience is as good or better. read more

We purchased a 2011 Dodge Ram from CarMax in June of 2020. There were many problems from the beginning. We went back at 3 times to pick up the truck before they were actually able to fix the problem. A year later we needed a new transmission. We did not expect to purchase a lemon from a reputable company like CarMax. UPDATE: CarMax reached out to me and had the vehicle towed. I did a lot of searching after getting the approval letter from my bank in November 2020. I found a great car online at Carmax in Athens, GA and scheduled a test drive. It was exactly what I wanted. The sales rep was courteous and the process was quick. She actually came back with better financing from Carmax Financial than my bank had offered. Very pleased with experience and this location the exception of one detail...this Carmax location does NOT have a service department! I did not discover this until six months later when I wanted to have a pre-travel inspection and an oil change. They refer you to outside shops. :( read more

I was told by the sales person that the check would clear in 1-3 business days. Today my bank is saying that Car Max hasn't released the funds to cover the check and it will be at least 10 business days. Over the last 10-15 years, my wife and I have purchased 3-4 cars from Carmax. It's just easy and stress free. We got a 24 hour test drive yesterday (from the Athens location) and while we liked the car, we just didn't love it so we took it back. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and simply said we just don't love it and the rep said it was totally fine. We handed him the keys and we're out of there in less than 2 minutes.
