Remember in Home Alone, that concierge at the hotel who was a total crab and wanted to bust Macaulay Culkin's ass? I think his dopplegangler works the front desk at Carleton. We had a group # for our wedding guests, but somehow a handful of their reservations disappeared. Maybe it was user error or maybe it wasn't, but when working in a hotel, you need to just drop the 'tude and satisfy your paying customers. You don't act like you're doing us a favor by letting us stay at your crusty hotel. Anyhow, besides all that drama, the hotel was fine. The cleaning ladies I ran into were super sweet. The rooms were clean and spacious. Their choice of fabric patterns for the curtains were unfortunate. The entrance was really weird. What hotel doesn't have automatic doors? Getting your stuff into the hotel is like an obstacle course. First you push through two sets of doors (no button for handicapped people to access), then you have some steps to make it through. To get to the right wing, you have to go up some more steps before making it to an elevator. Someone didn't think this through very well. read more

Deciding to have my wedding at the Carleton was one of the first decisions I made after getting engaged, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made over a year and a half of planning! We held our ceremony and reception at the hotel, since we had a decent number of out-of-town guests and I didn't want them to have to deal with driving. (And how awesome is it to be able to party all night and then just be a short elevator ride away from your room?) I know I'm a little bit biased, but my wedding was BEAUTIFUL. Everything turned out better than I ever could have hoped for. My vision for my wedding day was executed exactly; how many brides can say that? Annie Mammoser is the wedding coordinator at the hotel, and whatever they're paying her, I'm sure it's not enough, because she is amazing. Anything I wanted or needed, she was on it. She made sure all the little details were seen to........ I did not spend a single second worrying about anything on my wedding day. Even everything leading up to that (the tasting, meeting with linen rental vendor, multiple walk-throughs with my florist) was stress-free. The space is really beautiful (love the chandelier and the bar area), and it's nice to have it all to yourself (rather than being one of several weddings at a larger hotel or banquet hall). We took some beautiful pictures in front of the Marion Street entrance, and all the extra seating area made for a really fabulous cocktail hour. (The only thing I'm kind of bummed out about now is that I didn't get to have any of the awesome hors d'oeuvres we selected since I was so busy taking pictures and saying hi to everyone.) As far as cost goes - totally a bargain! 102 people for dinner, copious amounts of alcohol and hours of dancing cost us less than $10,000. Try doing that in downtown Chicago. (Not to mention the two complimentary nights in a suite that we were given. The room was amazing, and it was really nice to be comped like that.) I've now been married for a month, and my friends and family are still talking about the food (really, really delicious!), the candy buffet (set up by Annie, perfectly!), and how much fun they had (possibly due to 5 hours of open bar). I really wanted to like / love this hotel BUT! It reminds me of one of those places that are trying to hard to be something that they will never be. We went here for brunch. The food was luke warm and not too tasty. The guy that they had fixing the omeletts didn't understand English (what part of the plan was that ? ) the server came only 1 time to bring us drinks and of course due to mothers day brunch, the Tip Added to her ticket was a whopping 20% gratuity when we didn't see her. For almost $200 for 4.. one 12 yrs of age..I think I will do as I always do, spend a little more and head to the Ritz Carlton or the Drake hotel.. read more

We picked this spot because it is the closest hotel to Forest Park. We paid amost $200 a night and we did get a suite. The suite was very large- but needs serious updating. The carpets were gross, the wall paper was coming loose, the furnture looked like it had been in a Frat house. Needless to say, the only reason we have chosen this place for a second time is due to it's location. I decided to ask the front desk manager if there were any remodels in the works. She did explain that all of the rooms have been or are in the process of being re-modeled. She also said that the suites were the last one scheduled for re-model. Beautiful ballroom and bar area. Great ambiance. We had about 65 people at our wedding reception and suprisingly the ballroom wasn't too big, however, since the bar area is down a little corridor, people pretty much ventured to the bar to drink and lounge after dinner/dancing. It was intimate, people we're able to meet and talk. Since we had a small party, everyone could fit comfortably into the large bar area. The food was from Philanders and it was awesome across the board- the fav main dish was the beef and tilapia. YUMMY! We received a complimentary room which worked out well, we used it as our home base. It was close to the reception area and was very well kept with a old fashioned flair. I'm very happy with how the reception turned out, I think the hotel is great for smaller weddings and is a wonderful place if you want to get away from the typical Holiday Inn reception. Our course it comes with a price tag, but it was worth it! One more side note for wheelchair users: I was concerned since a couple of the guests are wheelchair-bound and the hotel reception area is actually on a couple levels. The hotel isn't accessible with ramps throughout, but they have lifts throughout to accomodate even larger electric wheelchairs. We just had our wedding in Oak Park and did a room block at the Carleton. Katie in the sales dept. couldn't have been nicer to us, and the hotel was very accommodating to all our requests. The guests loved their rooms and the groom's suite was very nice. The bridal bathroom was perfect for getting ready! There were a couple lovely places for photos too. All in all it's a great deal and I recommend the hotel to anyone staying in Oak Park! read more

So dirty! I'm contemplating not staying here. My husband and I stayed here two years ago while looking at houses in the area and really loved the charm of it. However, that stay was in the main building and it's now obvious there is a big difference between that and the creepy motor lodge rooms separate from the actual hotel. I was excited to come back and stay here but was soon met with disappointment when I checked in and they told me I was not booked for the main building. Upon walking into my room I was met with gross, moldy carpet I wouldn't walk barefoot on, tattered bath towels, and a bathroom that looks like it needs five hours of serious scrubbing. Not to mention having an exterior door to your room as well as some weird adjoining door that doesn't have a lock I'm able to adjust. As a single woman staying here it's very creepy. My wife and I stayed 7/3 - 7/5 this is an older boutique hotel with decor that is dated similar to a room at the Drake (Chicago) or the Waldorf (midtown) less the lavish lobby. The room was spacious, (except for a small bathroom with old fixtures) clean and comfortable. Free parking and wifi. Staff was friendly and helpful. We will defiantly come back. I actually live real close to the Carleton but recently had a one night's stay the day before my wedding. I was lucky to stay in the hotel (instead of the motel section) which had a HUGE whirlpool tube. I would recommend staying at this hotel just to enjoy it. The staff was extremely helpful when my makeup artist needed a special chair to do makeup and they also were nice enough to let me stay a little after check out time. When I was in a rush at the last minute to leave, they checked me out without me having to wait. Thank you so much! The only down side: I left my bridal gown bag at the hotel (in fact I saw it but was in a rush to leave but didn't have time to go back). I called later that night but the maid service claimed nothing was found. The bag was pretty expensive, but I know it's my fault. (I was there for business, didn't want to stay at the airport and downtown Chicago didn't make sense) Its true it looks recently renovated, the lobby area is pretty ritzy looking, and the restaurant seemed to have a lot of business. I stayed in the motor inn section. The sheets & towels were worn & tired. The place just didn't look sparkling. Don't get me wrong, this hotel is quaint. However, I did find it quite outdated. The room (King) while spacious, smells a bit like my grandmother's closet. The bed was decently comfortable and I did enjoy how many pillows are stocked in the rooms! The shower didn't function very well and again, I know this is just an old building but I do think it could use some updating. The elevators are super tiny, typical of the age. I traveled for business to Chicago, but it was a convention weekend and all the loop hotels were booked. I found this, and worried that it might be cheap but low quality, but I was happily surprised. The interior and rooms are very nice. It is not the most convenient, but the desk called taxis for my commute into downtown Chicago, the ride taking about 20 minutes. The area seems nice, with some charming local historical buildings. Gym access is provided via the local YMCA, and although I was worried that it would be rundown, it was also surprisingly nice. read more

I just had a great wedding for 150 people at the hotel. It went amazingly and Meghan the coordinator made the whole experience very fun, easy and organized. I highly recommend the experience. We also stayed in the hotel for 2 nights as well as had 45 rooms for our guests and everyone had a wonderful time. It's such a perfect convenient place as well. We had a suite and shared it with a total of 5 people. The pullout bed was not bad but it had a dirty blanket on it. We did not see this right away. We picked this hotel for a weekend away from the city because we thought Oak Park would be a nice place to unwind. The lobby had an old-world charm that lent the hotel a boutique feel. We splurged on a hot tub suite, and the tub was indeed the highlight of the experience. The bathroom was huge and seems to have been recently remodeled. The rest of the suite was immaculate, the front desk staff attentive, and the wi-fi as high-speed as advertised. For those that might be directionally-challenged, this hotel is off the beaten path and a bit difficult to locate. It is within walking distance from downtown Oak Park, though, so it is very convenient for those who would prefer to leave their car and spend the weekend on foot. I think the Carleton would benefit from the services of an interior decorator for the rooms. Much of the furniture seemed very traditional mid-price hotel style and boring. Not nearly as classy as the lobby might suggest. That was a bit disappointing. We did enjoy our stay, though the hotel was not amazing enough for us to feel an urgent need to book a second stay. read more

We just had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Carleton, and the hotel, location and event itself were phenomenal! Since the majority of our guests were traveling it was important for us to make it comfortable and convenient for them. Everyone stayed at the hotel or motor inn next door (which cost a little less, but is very cute and convenient!), and they didn't have to move their car again until they went home after the wedding. It was a huge bonus to have everything in one place! Our ceremony and reception were in the hotel ballroom with cocktails in the bar/library area in between, and it worked out perfectly! Plus the downtown Oak Park area provided shopping and restaurants within a couple of blocks, which made it a great weekend getaway for everyone. My husband and I also stayed in the hotel, and the Hemingway Suite was beautiful and became a great home base for the wedding party on the day of the wedding. With all of that said, the people we worked with to plan our event were all spectacular! Dana and Katie in the Sales office took care of our guest rooms and reservations, and everyone was very happy with their rooms! Meghan was a pleasure to work with on Catering and details for our ceremony and reception. They were all very professional, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly and also very flexible to accommodate our special requests. Meghan made my vision and wedding theme come to life! And best of all...the food served at our reception dinner was AMAZING. We have received many compliments on how good it was, and I had to agree. They offer passes to the YMCA which is a 1 block walk away, but we unfortunately didn't take advantage of that opportunity. I'd stay here again and I would recommend it to friends! read more

We stayed at the Motel part of the Clarleton. This is a separate area not in the hotel. It had allot of + the price was under 100 bucks, was on a single floor close to the parking. The room was small but the decoration was very nice kind of 60's inspired. The town was within walking distance. Oak Park has allot of shops. (we went on the 4th almost all were closed that day). The green line train was a block away if you want to go downtown. Take a visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright former home and walk or drive to the dozen or so homes he built very cool. read more

Outdated. Looks like the inside of an RV from the eighties. Not as advertised. Should have stayed at a motel. Would have been more comfortable. Inside of bathroom was so small it was uncomfortable for me to pee in there. I truly felt bad for my 6'5" husband. Weird pink stuff and hair on toilet, hairs on floor all over room, we received a used and reboxed hand soap in our bathroom. Towel in bathroom had stain, bedsheets had stains, check in was not good and desk attendant was rude because we used hotel tonight app which apparently requires 45 min to go through. Not my experience at other hotels. We left our party early drove back to the hotel to get our stuff and drove over an hour home instead of enjoying our date night, because we were too disgusted and uncomfortable to stay here. When I mentioned this to front desk staff i got a "sorry". Not what i would have expected out of a place like this. Extremely disappointed. read more

I failed to check the restaurant downstairs and didn't even see that they had some sort of a bar area too. My fiance and I had attended her cousins wedding reception here. The reception was excellent. Food was good, service was good. But the customer service from the staff was very unacceptable. Upon checking in the lady behind the desk was very rude!! She asked if we were parking a car we said no we rode with my fiance's mom (who was standing right next to us.) And she had asked "I'm sorry are you parking a car or not?" When we got to our room it was hotter than hell. I turned off the heater and put the A/C on like full blast. My husband and I had our wedding reception at the Carleton in July. They were absolutely amazing to work with. We were able to use their beautiful ballroom for dinner and dancing, as well as a gorgeous 1920s looking bar, a sitting room and a larger event room for our cocktail hour and just as extra space for our guests to mingle in, relax, and have a great time. The hotel has a vintage beauty to it, which worked perfectly with our Art Deco wedding theme. Candice coordinated all the details of the day perfectly. She was so on top of everything, handled details with my vendors, let me drop off decorations at any point the week before the wedding, set everything up perfectly, and then boxed it all up for us after the wedding for pick-up at our convenience. She made the craziness that is wedding planning as stress free as possible. The food was wonderful, we received compliments from all our guests on their dinners. The service the entire night was quick and discreet. Every last detail was taken care of beautifully and exactly as I wished. My husband and I received a free stay in their honeymoon suite the night of our wedding, which was a beautiful space. We both appreciated the jacuzzi tub the next morning after a very long day and a night full of dancing. I found their prices to be very reasonable. If you're in Chicago and planning your wedding and are balking at Chicago wedding prices, consider looking a little further west to Oak Park and the Carleton. On each occasion it over-delivers: with two excellent restaurants in the building, great walkability around downtown Oak Park, and easy rail transport to downtown Chicago, it makes the perfect place to stay. For those of you planning a wedding and considering the Carleton, look no further! The hotel itself is gorgeous, especially if you consider yourself to be an appreciator of the finer details and have a little vintage in your soul. The hotel dates back to 1892 and showcases beautiful sitting rooms, stained glass, cast iron chandeliers, and the privacy of your own wing for the course of your wedding. What's more, the food delivered for the price is incredible. Our guests had a choice between NY Strip Steak (which I specified at medium rare and which was served at medium rare), Pan Seared Tilapia with kalamata olive and mediterranean vegetable risotto, and a Grilled Vegetable Plate with the most incredible au gratin potatoes. Everyone raved about the food and I frequently heard, "this is the best food I've ever eaten at a wedding." My husband and I both value the quality of food highly and were worried that our insistence on a sit down dinner would break the bank. Not so here. We chose a Sunday in March and the sales/catering manager Anne Parker was open to negotiation. Speaking of Anne Parker, I cannot say enough good things about her. She is warm, kind, sincere, and very good at her job; in other words, she has all the qualities you want in a planner without hiring your own. She arranged our tasting, linen selection, and even recommended an outstanding florist (who did the flowers at her own wedding). She was always available and in touch, and the lines of communication remained open all the way up to the wedding. The Carleton is located in Oak Park, IL, a suburb that boasts the vibe of a quaint, small town and that comfort and boutique quality definitely translates to the hotel and its accommodations. The restaurant in the lobby is excellent and breakfast at Poor Phil's (on the Marion Street side) is absolutely delicious! The rooms are clean, well, kept and nicely adorned (albeit slightly pricey even with the group rate). Want to watch the budget and offer rooms to guests? The Motor Inn, despite the unfortunate title, has been completely rehabbed and the rooms are excellent and well priced. All in all, we had an amazing wedding--not just the day itself, but all the phases leading up to it--on account of the Carleton and its team of dedicated staff. My wedding has happened. It happened at the Carleton and it was fantastic. The most fantastic wedding I have ever been to; I am so proud to say it was mine. Annie Parker, special events coordinator extraordinaire, oversaw this event with care and love and attention to every detail - as if it were her own. Annie and I have gotten to know each other pretty well over the past year or so. I have emailed her daily for weeks at a time with silly questions and requests and advice and she has always responded with clear, thorough responses and always with our best interest in mind. The staff at The Carleton deserve some recognition. I had quite the crowd -- the most bottles ever consumed at one event. Yup, that's us! We had a few scenarios that would've thrown the average banquet staff off their game, but not this one! I can't say enough about the conscientious effort to make my wedding the best it can possibly be. The food was amazing -- we had chosen honey mustard crusted chicken, rib eye and salmon. All deserving high marks. All the guests that made mention of the food were pleasantly surprised with the quality AND quantity of these dishes. The rib eye was the most consumed entree and this piece of meat was something to be expected at a high end steak house. Very nice. Our room was beautiful, clean and large. We had 12 other guests booked at the hotel and all were pleased as well. Poor Phil's is the bar and grill which I have reviewed in the past, but will mention that they serve a great breakfast! Our guests all enjoyed the food that was served from the Hors d'oeuvre to the full course dinner. The open bar is amazing, the drinks are mix to perfection. Prices are excellent. Our suite room is very clean and spacious, it got everything that you need. The staffs are very professional, friendly and accomodating most especially Maura. Thank you Maura for all your patience and help in the planning of our wedding. You made us feel at home and comfortable from the beginning of planning until our wedding day. We had a teeny little dinner (18 people) here the night before the boy's Bar Mitzvah, and some of our guests stayed here. A lovely hotel with gracious service. You won't get a pool and fitness center, but the location and charm more than make up for it. Dana and Annelise gave our small-scale event the same attention and service that they'd give to a 200-person wedding. The food was was tasty, though not very inventive. The thing is, that you won't get away cheap. There are room charges on top of the food charges, which is why we had the main event at Maggiano's. read more

Stayed in the Motor Inn section prior to going to hospital for surgery. Room was nice and appeared clean but roaches were crawling out of the vent in the bathroom. Slept with all the lights on. Staff was rude when checking in. Hospital told us the hotel gave discount for people traveling out of town for folks who have family in hospital. Staff was unaware of any type of arrangement. Doesn't matter my wife stayed elsewhere for a week while I was in the hospital after the staff being rude and the roaches. Never again. Oh and the internet connection sucked. read more

This was the perfect place to stay for the days before and night of our wedding in Oak Park. The rooms are beautiful, and provided a great backdrop for all the getting ready photos and video we captured. The hotel is central in the town, so it was easy to just walk to and from the 19th Century Club where we had the ceremony and reception. (It was really lovely to have that walk with my partner after we left our party.) It's also close to the train into downtown Chicago, so all around it was a very convenient place to stay. My boyfriend & I stayed overnight for NYE's. The vintage look of the hotel is nice and the restaurant inside the hotel Poor Phil's served some good food. The staff at the hotel and restaurant were professional and accommodating. The room was clean with a kitchenette so there was no problem keeping our drinks chilled. The only issue was the heating system. We felt the cold the minute we arrived into our room. Unlike most hotels where guest can control the heat, this hotel doesn't offer that, not in the main building that is, not sure if its the same with the motel section. The heat flows thru radiators which were not turned up when we got to the room. The room eventually warmed up some after the maintenance visit but once the timer shut off it got cold again. I definitely plan to visit again at some point but only during the summer months. read more

Given that we learned about the Carleton as a wedding venue on Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/list/everything-wedding-on-a-budget-chicago), it only seems fitting that I submit my review here. My then fiance and I stumbled upon the Carleton after just having bought a house in Oak Park. We thought we wanted a "cool" loft wedding downtown, but as soon as we met Annie and realized how accommodating, experienced and helpful she was, we quickly changed our minds. What a good decision! Annie worked with us to get just the kind of small-ish, informal party that we wanted. She gave us suggestions but never pushed, and she was always willing to accommodate our requests and help us fulfill our vision. On the days leading up to the wedding and on the day of the wedding itself, she seemed to be in 10 places at once, making sure everything was being taken care of AND calming the nerves of this slightly stressed out, type A bride. The whole day came off perfectly. The hotel staff took care of getting our guests to their rooms, the catering staff fed them and served them drinks, and Annie was there through the whole event, helping to set things up, and generally making sure all of the last minute details were taken care of. The highlight for me was that, on my wedding day, I was actually able to enjoy the wedding and our guests and not worry about anything! Annie and the Carleton staff made certain of that. The location met our needs, and the hotel staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. However, there were certain negative aspects that could not be fixed by a simple call to the front desk. At this price point, you do not get what you pay for. If we're simply talking about the quality of the rooms, I would say $75/night, $80 tops. Certainly not $188. Overall, the biggest concerns were the rooms' smell, and the rooms' cleanliness. Even though it is a non-smoking hotel, the first room I was given was stuffy and smelled of smoke. It reminded me of an old room in a B&B that is rarely used. I get the impression that lots of weddings happen at this hotel, so I think people party in the rooms, and staff does not necessarily enforce the non-smoking policy. One of the restaurants in the lobby is fairly new, and management did not adequately consider how the hotel's layout and air flow (or lack thereof) might let the smell of the restaurant linger in the elevators and the hallways of the upper floors. There is radiator heat in the rooms, which is fine. There are also wall air conditioner units, but there are no instructions- just a remote- and it took some time to dicifer. The rooms just look dingey. The comforters are pilling due to wear, blankets old. The pillows had yellow stains. Furnishings look somewhat grungey on the surface, as though they haven't been wiped down properly. The wallpaper and sofa had white stains. The bathroom had mildew. When the first room I had smelled of smoke (I have a severe smoke allergy), to the hotel's credit, I was (very nicely) given a second room without question. While the smell of smoke in the second room was less, the room was no cleaner. Both rooms hadn't been vacuumed well, and there was grit and dirt in the carpet. In addition, a previous guest had spilled coffee grounds in one area, and no one had cleaned it up. I understand that due to the age of the building, that most funds must be put into the exterior, and keeping it up to code. That being, said, for the money you are paying, I think the owners should seriously consider addressing some of these problems. read more
