A Toxic Environment Masked by a Pretty Campus
Do not be fooled by the picturesque campus and the prestigious reputation. My experience at Carleton was deeply troubling, and I cannot in good conscience recommend this institution to anyone, especially minority students. The school talks a great talk about community and intellectual curiosity, but the reality is a culture of arrogance, administrative indifference, and unchecked racism.
My time here was marked by a constant feeling of being an outsider. The student body is overwhelmingly white, and I experienced more overt and casual racism in my first year than I had in my entire life. When a fellow student made openly racist remarks about Mexicans directly to my face, the administration's response was pathetic. Instead of addressing the student's behavior, a dean essentially told me it was my responsibility to deal with it. This is not an isolated incident; it's indicative of a campus culture where issues of race are dismissed and minority students are left to feel unsupported and unwelcome.
This institutional arrogance starts at the top. The admissions staff are curt and act as if they are doing you a favor by even speaking to you. The professors, while academically accomplished, are often egocentric and disconnected from the real-world challenges their students will face. The entire place operates in a small-town bubble, believing its own hype while failing its students on a fundamental level.
If you are a minority student, please visit the campus and see for yourself how little diversity there is. If you are any student who values integrity and a genuinely supportive community, I urge you to look elsewhere. Carleton College may have a strong academic reputation, but its ethical and social failings create a toxic environment that is not worth the tuition. read more
