We went to Carkeek Park earlier this summer for a group picnic with an organization I am involved in. I have to say this is a great park for such an activity but a lot of other people had the same idea as well making it a fairly busy place. We stayed at Shelter One and had a shade to get out of the sun due to a roof at the shelter which was great! There was also a grill that we uses which worked out very well. We cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and later on someone even cooked a pizza... which if you follow online instructions for this you can accomplish this. We were right next to the salmon slide which is very popular with kids here but also with adults for picture opportunities. Bathrooms are close by and are very suitable compared to previous picnic outings at other parks this organization has done. We were very close to the beach and so we took some time to stroll across the pedestrian overpass and meandered on the beach and enjoyed the view of Puget Sound which was awesome as always! There are lots of park paths to explore but we didn't want to be gone too long from our group so we didn't explore any of those so that will definitely need to be explored another time for sure!

Carkeek Park spans 220 acres and consists of lush forest, meadows, wetlands, and creeks. It's located west of the Northgate area of Seattle and is next to the water. There are plenty of walking and hiking trails here. To get to the beach, drive down the long narrow road. There are multiple parking lots throughout; on weekends and warm days, I'd recommend parking at the first spot you can find because it can get very full. There was a large grassy area with a playground structure and tables for large gatherings. You can even reserve some areas for private events. From the grassy area there is a small bridge and stairs that lead to the beach. The stairs can be a little shaky and vibrating as you walk down, so I'd recommend holding onto the rail for safety. The beach itself is very rocky so walking barefoot might hurt, and I'd bring towels to sit or lay on. Even past the beach there were more grassy areas with tables and trees. The park was bigger than I thought and it's a really nice place to spend a warm day or afternoon.

Absolutely lovely park! I was going to be in the area for other things and wanted to get there early, which means I gotta find a place to get my walk on! I asked Washington Trail Association what was in the area and Carkeek was recommended. This is a huge park with a lot of trails to choose from as well as a very nice playground area and beach access. When I was here I was able to catch was appears to be the tail end of the cohos going upstream which was a nice find! This park is very dog friendly and has a low elevation so it's good for the little kiddos as well. Definitely worth stopping by!

Carkeek Park is a 200+ acre park that's considered to be in the Broadview neighborhood. Residents can get here easily, but it's a just a little drive off a main street giving anyone an opportunity for a nice day out. To start - there is a kids/visitors center when you make your way down the to the parking area. It wasn't open on this visit, but information sits outside about programs and wildlife potentially seen in the park. This is nice. Down to the main first - parking area is a sort of open field with some creek points that have alcove like areas where Salmon and other water dwellers may be depending on the time of year and conditions. There are Information plaques around to add to the education for any readers. There is nice open space for picnicking and field activity. There are trails around, none very elevating but good enough for me. At Carkeek you can make your way to the beach which is entered by a bridge of "locks" (literal locks for your high school locker adorn this bridge), or you can take paths that lead you into very forest-y trails that for some moments let you get lost in the trees and brush. Carkeek Park is a good way to spend a day or at least a few hours. It has simple trails, beach and open field to offer while being that are great for being outside.

Carkeek Park is a lovely little park with so many things you can do with your family or just want some alone time by yourself! I love coming here when I just want to be close to the water cause it's generally not too crowded. There are multiple walking trails, picnic tables, playground for the kids (check out the salmon slide) and the beach is right across the bridge. It also seems like a nice place to have a get together or birthday because there is so much open space. The hiking trail is super easy and doesn't too long before you reach the beach, if you're lucky you'll be able to see some seals! The beach is big enough that you can venture out by yourself and just listen to the waves. There are signs that say there are no dogs allowed but I see so many people bring their dogs here. Parking is free and there are multiple parking lots but the main parking lot by the playground can get pretty crowded depending on what time of the year you go.

Magic park right in the city. Clean trails. Elevation change. A stunning beach. A railroad bridge. The only downside are the bathrooms but hey it's a city park. Come enjoy the views in nearby any kind of weather. Breathe in.

This park was such a surprise to me! I saw it on Google Maps near my neighborhood, which is how I pick random places to explore. I saw it had trails and was near the water so I wanted to check it out. It took me awhile to figure out where the heck to park! I parked in a neighborhood because one of the trails literally starts between two houses. I felt like I was trespassing at first, but there was a sign that obviously said it led to a park so I walked through anyway. (I'm new to Seattle, is this a normal thing?) Immediately I was transported to a narrow walking path in a beautiful world of tall trees & moss. There was a fork and I walked onto the larger path. It didn't go too far before reaching a small, bumpy but legit road. A road?! This might be a road that... yup... as I walked on, this road led me to a PARKING LOT. I could've parked my car here. Oh well! This lot is near a playground and a large path that leads to a BRIDGE that goes above a train track in which two freight trains had gone under during my visit! It was really cool to see them pass by. Beyond this bridge is the BEACH! It was a large sand/pebble beach with driftwood and small pools of water to play in. Of course there were the incredible views of Puget Sound beyond the pebbles. On my way back to the car, I decided to take a different trail (it was called the North something trail, I forgot). This was a bit steeper and more muddy in some parts, but it wasn't too long of a walk and was very pleasant. What a hidden gem. I am definitely coming back.

We love this park! We have been here a few times and love it more each time. So many different areas, we love walking on the beach and watching the sunset. There is also a great play area for kids, lots of picnic benches with great views of the water, a large lawn, and some paths in the woods. We love watching the trains go by too. There is something for everyone.

Such an amazing adventure to have here! We got to see the Salmon returning upstream, take a walk and go to the beach for a bit, and play at the playground. It's such an amazing hidden park and I can't believe I haven't been here before, such a treasure!

TLDR: Lovely area to walk. Very rocky beach. Don't slip on the seaweed. Golden Gardens has more critters. Small parking lot so you may end up walking a ways. Sorry, no dogs allowed. There's a sign on the bridge before you enter the beach. Not as crowded as golden gardens which is nice but there's also not as much sand. The beach is pretty rocky. Watch where you step with the seaweed at low tide--it can get very slick! Low tide doesn't have quite as much life as Golden Gardens but there are a lot of clam holes here. I also managed to find a few live moon snails--which l've found at golden gardens as well. Golden Gardens definitely has more crabs, fish, starfish, etc. If you have a lot of experience like I do, you can find a variety of things but it is much harder to look than Golden Gardens. I think people mainly come here for the creek and view rather than for low tide. There are no amenities here. Just a shoreline with one access point that is a bridge over a railroad. Mind those stairs! They are very hole-y so watch those floppy floppies! There is a single porta-potty in the parking lot but it's nowhere near the shore.

Cute park with a nearby beach. My boyfriend and I visited the beach to check out the low tides. We were able to see really cool sea creatures, like barnacles, anemones, snails, starfish, crabs, and fish. The beach has a beautiful view of Mt. Olympus and the water is cold and refreshing on a warm day. Only thing is that the sand is on the rocky side, so I recommend wearing sandals on the beach and bringing a soft towel to sit on.

Most definitely a "GEM" of a park: offering a little NW attitude and different offerings in one (220 acres worth) park. From forests to meadows to wetlands and creeks & beaches-this is IT! Puget Sound beach and marvelous mountain views! Don't limit your visit to the wooded/meadows/playground! Go across the pedestrian bridge to the beach! Explore the tidal area-just watch out when the tide comes back in! They do NOT allow dogs on the beach-per the signs they had there when we visited.

Love, love, love this park. It has so many things to see. You can sit down on a bench that is besides the river and watch the salmon or you can walk along the river. You just have to find one of the little shadowy entrances along the river trail infant of one of the parking lots. By the way, the other parking is uphill going on the right when you enter the Park. You can also walk uphill beside the water treatment or the other way. Both are part of the ring. You can find different trails with stairs going up and down and connecting with the neighborhood behind the Park. Walk all the way through it till you find the apple trees. Some of them are always protected with nets. I think they are being treated as there are some worms :S If you walk through the neighborhood, pass the school and then get into some of the uphill trails, you can find a kind of botanic park with flowers too. But be careful hiking downhill. Super fun for dogs! You can also go the other way until you get to a bridge that takes you to the beach. Unfortunately, no dogs are aloud :( There should be a place for them so all family can enjoy a quick swim after a hike!

My all-time favorite park in Seattle. Carkeek has it all; hiking trails, lots of grass for the doggies, play ground for the kiddies, a beautiful rocky beach for the kitesurfers and kite-fliers... and beautiful wildlife. I even saw a bald eagle on the beach here once, it was simply amazing. read more

I've lived on the Eastside almost my whole life and never visited Carkeek Park. What a treasure. If you like St. Edwards Park, Lincoln Park or Discovery Park you will LOVE this park. Plenty of parking, Clean bathrooms (open!), lots of trails, creeks and Puget Sound. What more could you need?! read more

I am hesitant to review this park - I don't want the best kept secret in Seattle to get out! This is definitely the most underrated park in Seattle. Majestic views of the Olympic Mountains, miles of rocky beach, multiple forested trails, entertaining playground, and plenty of parking (always important... especially if you stick to visiting Golden Gardens). Always my favorite, even the drive to enter the park is wonderful. Absolutely the best read more

This is an all-around great little park. There are interesting trails into the woods which lead to views above the water. There's also a lovely grassy field to play frisbee or just lay on a blanket to read or take a nap. If you get there early enough there's ample parking. The real draw, of course, is the trail to the beach head. There's an overpass to cross the tracks and if you hang out up there you can watch the trains go by and feel the vibrations of their engines. I would think kids into trains would love this place. Lots of families and people with dogs enjoy this park. I went there on a windy day and watched kiteboarders do their thing. Gorgeous! Seems like no one I know goes to Carkeek, many people haven't even heard of it ("car-what park?"), but I just moved within a mile of it and I love it. It's got a beach that's every bit as beautiful as golden gardens with the same stunning, westward-facing mountain panorama but with far fewer people and a cool railroad bridge to boot. I have hardly begun exploring the hiking trails and non-beachy parts of the park but I have heard glowing reviews and I can't wait. The one bummer is that it's kind of hard to actually walk to any part of this park you might actually want to be at (at least from my house) and I think it's nice to be able to stroll to your neighborhood park instead of loading up in the car to get there. read more

Carkeek park, you're gorgeous. Gorgeous and full of weirdos. Big enough for a nice stroll in the woods, small enough to find your vehicle, well hidden and far away enough to not be completely packed in all areas. Also there's the lovely beach after the railway overpass. There is always something happening on the beach. The last time I visitied, it was a ton of kitesurfers. Walks in the woods, streams, a hatchery, picnics, bbqs, and superhigh people. This park has it all. read more

Healthy vistas, hiking, sitting in a blue or cloudy sky. They have childrens programs in summer and interesting volunteer opps. Peaceful and pretty. read more

Another gorgeous park in Seattle!! I have visited this place several times and will be back many more times! I enjoyed the hiking trails. (Wear good hiking shoes and bring water!) The views of the Olympic mountains are awesome! Some of the trails will give you a workout! I have brought my dog here (on leash) on the trails. I did see garbage cans in different locations! One negative about the park is that dogs are not allowed on the beach- bummer! :-( I could not deduct a star from the park- its too beautiful! Anyway, If you are cool with leaving your pooch in the car/truck- go walk down on the beach! Get your feet in the water! Oh! There is a train that goes through the park by the beach. It's pretty cool when the train goes by along parts of the beach! read more

I heart Carkeek Park. Well, actually I heart the Blue Ridge gated beach... but its attached to Carkeek Park, so I think I heart both. We have 3 little pooches and its nice to take them out for a romp on the beach, and it's close by our neighborhood. Carkeek is a little gravely in parts, but if you are lucky enough to have access to the Blue Ridge beach its mostly sand which is much friendlier to puppy pads. Beware of frequent trains if you bring a sketchy dog, they will surely take off as the tracks are very close. OH, and pick up your poop. The poop fairy doesn't live there. read more

Carkeek is a lot bigger than it seems; it's got miles of trails that I haven't even explored yet. I love the different areas of the park--the big grassy lawn by the salmon run building, the beach, the little bog, and of course the wooded trails. There's also a great playground and picnic area. It's a great place to come at night too, to see the moonlight on the water or just hang out. Tip: When I go to Carkeek I like to park at the little trailhead site by the apartment buildings, rather than the main lot. It's a bit tricky to find, but if you're coming west on Northgate/105th go dead straight, rather than following the main road. Then take a right on 3rd and the next left. The trailhead's a block down on the right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this ;) read more

Oh Carkeek Park, how I love thee. You there, get out of my park! No, for reals. get out. sigh...... As much as I want to keep this beautiful park a secret, I just can't. I have whiled away many afternoons at Carkeek, hiking the trails, watching the trains, and lounging on the beach while listening to the sound of the waves. The "bubbleman" you mentioned is not merely an harmless eccentric. He has been harassing women with their children in the Greenwood and Ballard Fred Meyer's all week, approaching their children without permission (or even a word to their parents) and blowing bubbles 2 inches from the kids' faces, becoming indignant and irate when the kids start screaming and the parents ask him to stop. He's been following women with children out in the parking lot and trying to initiate contact with their children, refusing to back down until the mothers scream at him to leave them alone. This man is NOT harmless. If you have a strange incident with him, please report it to the police right away. We would all like to see this man restrained from being able to engage in this harassing behavior. read more

Found this park in an online search and loved it. Playground for children with an awesome salmon slide . Plenty of places to sit with bbq pits. There are badminton nets and trails we didn't yet explore. There is a stairway that leads to a beautiful view of the creek and water. Very rocky beach so wear some good shoes. Great park with scenic views and lots to do for the whole family. We'll be back! read more

One of my last stops for the weekend Seattle trip, but arguably the one of its best. What a beautiful, serene spot in a nice semi-secluded location. Views of the Sound, flowing creeks, super niece/nephew friendly (trains, ships, and a crazy salmon fish slide), plenty of green grass, clean air, and great views and photo spots all around. I was also struck at how well-maintained and clean this place was. No cigarette butts, drug needles, litter, or riff-raff to be found (hey I'm from LA)... anywhere! I foresee future repeat visits here, maybe a hike or two thrown in, and a nice place to recharge from the busyness of life. read more

What an awesome park! Great trails that you can explore for hours and hours. Awesome open fields for picnics and barbecues. There's a cool footbridge to the tidal flats that spans the active railroad (unfortunately, as with all Seattle parks, no dogs allowed on the beach). The sculptures that are installed are great, with QR codes to give you more information than simple plaques would. I also appreciate that unlike Olympic Sculpture Park, many of these are interactive and touching them is encouraged. Additionally, you have to go out of your way to find some of these hidden gems, as they are tucked away just off the trails. I can't believe I didn't come here until just a few days ago, and now it's fall and I may have to wait until spring again to fully enjoy the beauty of this park. read more

Carkeek Park never disappoints. The playground and upper level area are great for kids. Adults too can enjoy the generous BBQs and picnic bench area - all which overlook the Puget Sound on a beautiful sunny day. Amazing sunsets and a cool beach area allow for additional fun. Then there's this whole other area I haven't even explored - the trails etc. Gotta go here on a sunny day. Got to. read more

I came here after having a pint at the Jolly Roger and a long work day to get some fresh air and watch the sunset on the sound...and was it worth it. It was such a mesmerizing experience that i stood fixated for almost 30 minutes as the orange tint of the clouds slowly dove into the mountain range. Although I wish a train had passed through while i was there...would have added for a dramatic flair of sorts. It seems like a really cool place for a date...as most of the people there seemed to be huddled together for warmth ;) Definitely a jewel in Seattle, and worth so many more trips in the future. read more

I live really close to this park (I can see it from my bedroom window). I have explored this park throughly and it is really beautiful. Great place to walk the dog, jog, bike, make-out, smoke a joint and all the other great park related activities. In November I saw the salmon running which was really exciting to experience! read more

I was visiting Seattle and happened to find this park it is a very nice park and seems like a lot of activities happen here there is a cool creek running through the park and although I didn't see any fish it was a nice clear creek. Nice walking trails and birds galore. read more

One of the best parks in Seattle honestly. It is beautiful and scenic. It's right by the water but you have to walk across and down a fence bridge over a train track. Went here for a work retreat. Best place for team building. If I had children I would totally take them here everyday. read more

It had been awhile since visiting this park, so when a friend suggested heading north to check it out we jumped into the car with the dog and gave it a whirl. Walked down to the beach (yes, quite illegal with the dog, huh? I am crazy like that) although were sad to find out with the tides in we couldn't walk far in either direction...so we hit the bluff trail, which was totally short and ended up in a meadow that backed up to some houses. Hmmm...now what...we hit some additional trails on the south side of the park, gazed at the leaves and told some stories before hitting the playground...be careful on the see-saw if you are small like me you could end up with a bruised tailbone. All in all, it's a mighty fine park, but I think I still heart Discovery the best for my urban in-city escapes. read more

This was a great park. The trails, which are plentiful, are well groomed and varied in difficulty (for a city park). It may have been gray today, but there were some beautiful views and I can only imagine what it must look like on a sunny day. If I had kids I would bring them here. Good beach, a unique play ground and wonderful city nature hikes. It was a great walk with my dog though. I was bothered by the beer cans and garbage thrown over some of the ledges, but we can't blame the park, just the jackasses who did it. read more

Nice park right near me that I never knew existed. Great view and a nice beach to sit and relax (maybe too cold for swimming). There are picnic tables with small BBQs for grilling in the shade. There is a nice lawn area to throw frisbees, a football, or to kick a soccer ball. Bathrooms are not too nice and could use a little more upkeep. It's a good place to visit! read more

This is a great park. You can access the sound, lose yourself in the trees, and possibly discover hidden treasure (no, seriously). I like Carkeek for the variety of terrain and the unmanicured landscape. There a bunch of great trails for walking and running. I found a great 5k course, and several hour or two hour hikes. As for the treasure hunts, letterboxes live here. read more

Great playground areas, amazing views, good place to see trains, several small trails and places to picnic. Can't find a much better park in Seattle! We bring our boys here often. There is beach access, too, but we've never been. It can get crowded on really nice days, but there is a lot of parking. read more

Carkeek is my favourite park in Seattle so far after visiting quite a few of them. It has a little bit of everything: flat and incline trails, the beach, picnic ground, etc. For the most, I love the running tails which is right in the middle of forest, absolutely green and gorgeous! Coming from a very biased point of view, this is one of the best parks in Seattle. There are lots of beautiful trails you can take to charming benches overlooking the water. There is a playground that supplies all of your kids' needs. There is a beautiful beach, where I have built 2-story log cabins with my friends. In the summer, Osprey fly above the beach, diving into the water to catch fish. Eagles and even the once in a blue moon orca can be spotted. In November, make sure you come here for the salmon. Piper's Creek is the best place in Seattle to see the salmon come out of the ocean to reproduce. There is also an apple orchard a ways from the lower field. Carkeek is my backyard, as I live walking distance from this beautiful place. I couldn't be luckier. read more

Solid spot, alright parking, would be better if dogs were allowed on the beach but they aren't. A lot of "hiking" trails which is awesome. Definitely not a bad spot but is a little small but that's not their fault. read more

One of the best parks I have ever seen in my life. This park is awesome! Breathtaking views, beautiful landscape, picnic spots, lush green grass, wilderness as well as huge playarea for kids & an absolutely romantic beach...the list can go on. This park is for everyone. Whether you have kids and would like to have a picnic or if you would like to spend some time alone or want to have some romantic time with your boyfriend/girlfriend....this park has so much to offer for every age group and fir every mood. I love this park! If you are going on weekend on a sunny day, parking might be bit difficult. read more

Woods, water, sand, sun, fun and of course, trains! This is a great park, a little less crowded than Golden Gardens to the south. The trails are good little mini hikes with some amazing viewpoints from the bluff above the beach and plenty of viewing spots of Pipers Creek. Go in August and try to see salmon, which have finally been reintroduced. To get to the beach there's a pedestrian overpass over the railroad tracks. Of course it's a big attraction to be on the overpass when a train goes through right underneath you. There's an Environmental Learning Center, playground, big field, and plenty of space to enjoy a day. read more

Well maintained park. Busy, and almost no parking slot before/during sunset. Great place to walk with your leashed dogs and huge place to have fun with little kiddos. Access to beach was fantastic but you have to carry your stroller through the stairs. Found salmons in the streams too. read more

Great park for groups like family bbq, school class outings, bday parties....but also nice to just come here to get away...it's like closing out the external world for a while. I don't like the fact that you have to take the stairs up and down from the beach but it is good exercise. This is definately a kids' place, but grownups can enjoy it just as well. read more

Hello. I keep reading on other websites that carkeek park has some nudists about the place. is this true?? if so, is it nude-friendly? I am wanting to do that but want to make sure it is allowed or not before I head there. ty.

Carkeek is a public park run by the city of Seattle. It is not like you'd be prosecuted for nudity. I haven't seen any nude people there in my visits.

It keeps people away from the tunnel traffic along that road. It's still a work in progress with many developments planned in the future. There's still a lot of construction near Belltown as of June 2025. We stayed in a hotel near the park. It's super close to Pier 66. The park currently connects Pioneer Square with Pier 62, and has great views of Elliott Bay. We took the elevator up to the Overlook Walk so that we could gain access to Pike Place Market. There are also stairs that take you there from each side of the walkway. I don't remember it being this easy back in 2011. Heck, I don't even remember seeing the ferris wheel at Pier 57. When did that happen? It's a large and beautiful greenspace that's perfect for locals & tourists alike. We kind of lost our bearings for a bit, but then it became all clear that we were headed the right way to the market. I really like what they have done here. It will be cool to see it again once it's all done, and there's no more construction. It was a nice walk along the bay.

I'm also glad they kept access open even with all the construction happening around Elliott Bay. Despite the name, Pocket Beach isn't really a beach in the traditional sense. It's mostly pebbles and rocks instead of sand, but that's part of what makes it interesting. There are a bunch of big driftwood logs along the shore (not sure if they were placed there or just floated in over time), and they make great spots to sit and enjoy the view. It's actually a really nice place to catch the sunset. On clear evenings the light over Elliott Bay is beautiful and the logs are perfect for sitting and taking it all in. It's also very dog friendly. Lots of people bring their pups, and my fur babies love climbing over the logs, exploring the rocks, and splashing around near the water. Overall it's a great little stop along the Elliott Bay Trail if you want to sit for a bit, enjoy the scenery, or just get outside and relax.

Plan accordingly. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ Outdoor adventures keeps the guided groups small (maximum 12 people). I appreciate the small groups since this was my first time kayaking. Three types of kayaks are available: single, double or triple occupancy. Discover is an accepted form of payment. A Discover Pass is required to park at Spencer Spit. If you do not have a pass, a $10 day pass can be purchased with cash or check. There were several rangers checking passes on our visit so be sure to have a pass visibly displayed to avoid being ticketed. WHAT TO BRING - Signed Release of Liability - Bathing suit or non-cotton under layers preferred - A synthetic shirt (capilene, polypro, Under Armor, etc) - Shorts or pants made of a synthetic material (may get wet/damp) - Lightweight fleece jacket or windbreaker/rain jacket to provide warmth - Water shoes or sandals that strap on (or shoes that can get wet) - Sun hat and/or sunglasses - Sunscreen and chapstick - Water bottle - Optional; Camera, Plastic bag for wet items and change of clothing - If you have a gift certificate or prepaid voucher (such as Groupon) please bring a printed copy with you! Dorito Dan was our guide for the day. Dan was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The first hour is dedicated to introductions, procedures and safety. Be sure to use the restroom before departing. Once on the water, there is no turning back. Kayaking is great for teamwork and communication. Both are required to avoid frustration. I recommend wearing weight-lifting/bicycle gloves in order to prevent blisters. Each person in our group started getting blisters towards the end of the tour. During our 3 mile kayaking trip, we spotted starfish, seals and majestic bald eagles. Thank you Outdoor Adventures for providing a magnificent day of play while surrounded by gorgeous Mother Nature. We all plan to return in the near future for another go-around.

Carkeek park is UNSAFE!!! My car was vandalised in broad daylight there on the fourth of July, my rear windshield was shattered and my belongings stolen.... And NOTHING was visible in my car, unless you count maybe some chewing gum and an empty water bottle... I called the cops immediately, and of course those jack-asses said that nothing could be done (but if you speed or park illegally, beware of how quick and effectively they respond! Priorities?) This was my second trip to carkeek park, my friend's truck was vandalised the last time I was here, and I decided that it would be safe to visit Carkeek... but I was wrong, and that is why I am warning YOU not to go to this park... unless you carry a concealed weapon... please, please, please will somebody please murder the crack-heads that frequent that park, vandalising property and harrassing families!!! They want us to know that the park belongs to them, but we need to take a stand ourselves and literally fight back because the police will do nothing to make our parks safe for families and children..... DO NOT go to this park with your family!!! UNSAFE!!! read more
