I am quite late putting this review up, specifically approaching about 7 years…read more To paint the brief picture, my mom was diagnosed with cancer back in 2015; she was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Park Slope in Brooklyn; when it was determined she had cervical cancer that had spread, and she decided NOT to have chemo or surgery, we knew it was just a matter of time before she would leave this earth. When we determined that we couldn't have her comfortable at home (due to the machination of many of the family challenges) I was praying that we could get her into palliative care. Then the 'can we afford it' question comes up. I wanted to get her into MJHS because the tour showed me and my brother how our siblings would all be able to travel to Manhattan Beach AND have a place to visit in memory of her wonderful/beautiful existence. One of the nurses came to Methodist and while my mom was living close to poverty on medicare (but not medicaid) I was made aware that she could qualify for Medicaid (she was a working class female that was too proud to apply for what she was qualified to receive). Suffice it to say, my mom was a beautiful soul and she DESERVED to leave this earth in a manner that spoke to how she was loved. MJHS's Manhattan Beach campus was the PERFECT place to have my mom transition from this earth. The care provided, the facility itself...ALL WAS EXCELLENT AND RESPECTFUL FOR HER CARE AND TRANSITION. I have since donated annually as much as I can to MJHS on behalf of my mom's memory. I plan on buying the ornaments for the holidays in honor of her memory. If you're looking for a place for your family member who is on their transitional plane, PLEASE PLEASE check out MJHS.

She is more than just great - she is superb, super fantastic and goes "above and beyond" for all her clients. We are extremely satisfied with the entire Alvita Care family, and will continue to use their services for all our home care needs. Do not go to anyone else. Beth, as well as the entire Alvita Care family, are simply the best! Most recently, Beth also assisted us in hiring two home care attendants that are both absolutely perfect in every regard.. and one of them is even bilingual, as we had requested. We just couldn't have done it without Beth. She has been indispensable, and has patiently helped us throughout this entire process. She is definitely the greatest asset that Alvita Care can ever have. Finally, we are very grateful and fortunate to have found both Beth O'Connor, and the entire Alvita Care family, and will not hesitate to refer them to our family, friends, co-workers, and you, the reader. My stepmother got terrible treatment from these home hospice care nurses. When she was in the ER I…read moreasked the nurses to do a UTI (urinary tract infection) test since she had mental confusion just before. The ER nurses said she had normal temp and vitals and didn't want to do anything invasive. They said the broad spectrum antibiotic they gave her would take care of any UTI. I found out later that this is not recommended for UTIs since it can make them resistant. A narrow spectrum antibiotic is recommended, and then one after the other has to be tried quickly. UTIs are the second biggest cause of elderly women going to the ER. The hospital recommended this hospice. My stepmother at her home continued to lose appetite and not feel well. I called the 24 hour hospice nurse and she was in the area. However, just like the regular hospice nurse, she said they go by three signs of UTI only: the patient has to have temperature, mental confusion, and different urine than usual. I told her about the mental confusion from a couple weeks before but the nurse said it had to be recent. I said I looked it up and elderly people do not show the same UTI signs, they show loss of appetite, fatigue. The hospice nurse said they only go by these three and said she did not even have any equipment to test UTI. I was told by the other hospice nurse that I could get UTI test strips from a pharmacy to test myself and if positive they would do a further test. I wanted to go get the test strips the next morning. The nurses refused to send her to hospital as you give up your rights to do so yourself. They told me they didn't want to extend her suffering as she was going to die anyway. Which she did the next day, most probably from a UTI infecting her kidneys and causing sepsis, as she did not have any other real causes. Stay away from these people.

If one of your loved ones is sick and needs hospice care, I beg of you, for their sake, do not…read moresubject them to MJHS Hospice care. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. My mother was sent home on hospice, and after receiving recommendations from friends, we selected MJHS. It was a terrible decision. MJHS is an infuriatingly bureaucratic organization, utterly incompetent, designed to give the absolute minimum care possible, and to save money at every turn. They do not care about the patients whose lives they exercise control over; they care about their bottom line. With MJHS, getting even the simplest, most critical requests done is unacceptably slow. Need a refill of morphine? That will take 24 hours; hope you didn't run out. Ran out of Atropine on a Friday? Sorry, we can't handle that until Monday. Need a new piece of medical equipment? You'll probably have to call multiple times and be extremely persistent before anyone will lift a finger. Here's what happens when you call MJHS. You will reach a customer service agent, who is not medically trained, who is not able to do anything. The only thing that person can do is to take a message. They will then, supposedly, pass that message on to a nurse, who will supposedly do something about it. In many cases, the nurse can't do anything either, so they will supposedly pass the message onto a doctor, who will pass a response back to the nurse, who will then pass a response back to the customer service agent, who may decide to call you. Of course, that usually doesn't happen, and by the time it does, the message has usually been so garbled that they got it all wrong, and you will have to start the whole process again. I want to be clear that my experience was not limited to a few bad apples. I probably interacted with two dozen MJHS employees and almost all of them were bad. This organization is fundamentally broken. Dealing with MJHS is similar to dealing with a large impersonal company like AT&T or Verizon. Ask yourself: do you want to trust Verizon's customer support line with the care of your loved one?
