Her energy was contagious -- so passionate, patient, and incredibly skilled. She made the class very approachable, even for total beginners like me. Pearl broke down each step in a way that made it fun and not intimidating at all. The class was intimate and educational. The calligraphy kit she gave us to take home was such a treat! I put my new skills to the test by making place cards for a dinner party I hosted a few weeks later and they turned out great. While walking in Manhattan you never know who you will meet…read more Such was the case in Midtown East one late summer morning when I spotted a man holding a paint roller extension pole and wearing brightly colored paint-splotched sneakers. It was a chance encounter with this rainbow beam of a person that made me stop in my tracks and take a closer look. I'm so glad that I took that moment because the man wearing those DayGlo kicks is actually a very gifted and multi-talented Urban Artist known as Kam. I asked naively, "What are you going paint?" I reached out to do an anniversary cartoon telling the story of how my girlfriend and I got together and sent him a short paragraph with the details and some photos. Jon storyboarded it and right out of the gate it was funny and he got so many details (even stuff in the background) right. Once the final pencil was approved he colored it in with beautiful watercolors and it really took the cartoon to the next level. The process was very fast and took about two weeks from sending him stuff to getting the final piece, which I picked up in person. Send Jon an idea along with a couple photos. I'd recommend more than 1 so he can get the best sense of what everyone looks like. He'll make a few quick sketches of his design ideas and let you pick which one you like most. Then, he'll send multiple drafts along the way to make sure you're happy with how its coming out. When the final pencil is approved, he'll color it in and arrange to pick it up. He completed mine in about a week and a half but I got the sense he could do much faster if I needed it. And the price is determined by how many panels and how much detail you want. So if you're on a budget, Jon can still make you something cool. I'd highly recommend this as a gift!
