Chef Curtis louis is the best!!! Best curry goat and oxtails. He made us feel very welcomed, we drove 2 hours just for his food

Ok, so I'm originally from Florida which is very well known for its different cultures and food. Jamaican is one of my fav in Florida. And trust there is sooo many Jamaican spots in south Florida. I am also Caribbean myself, so I have a good idea what certain foods like Jamaican, Mexican, Cuban, Haitian, Puerto Rican, Dominican etc. should be tasting like. I hate to write negative reviews, because this men (the owner) was so sweet, kind and the service was great. Unfortunately, when we arrive the place is really dirty. We went there because one of my friends loves the turkey wings there and she recommended it. We order turkey plate, cabbage, sweet plantain, rice &peas and jerk chicken. I was afraid to consume the food and get some sort of poisoning. When I bent over to take a look at the food it did not look good. I asked myself are people really eating this? Then I looked in the back and the kitchen was also dark and a dirty mess. Mountains of dirty pots and pans. I said fk it, let's see what this is all about. See my receipt attached. Sad to say we took a bite of everything, and we ended up throwing it ALL away. Had to go spend more money to buy something else to eat. I do NOT recommend this place at all. I'm sure at one point his food was fire years ago. Also, inspections are critical to restaurant business and OUR HEALTH. I'm not sure he has had one since 2024. read more

I hate to write this because I had high hopes for this spot, but my experience just wasn't it. I've passed by this restaurant so many times and always thought, "The food has to be good." So, after a trip to the Dekalb Farmers Market, I decided to treat myself to two Sunday dinners: a large oxtail with rice and a goat roti. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. First off, I've realized getting roti from a Jamaican restaurant isn't for me--Trinis really do it better. That said, I think they should stop serving the goat curry inside the roti. It made the whole thing way too soggy, ruining the texture. On top of that, the goat was mostly bones, and the potatoes were huge--not bite-sized at all. The flavor? Just not there. The oxtail and rice were slightly better, but the portions were tiny, and again, mostly bones. To make it worse, the gravy tasted like it had cinnamon in it, which totally threw me off. I'd give the oxtail a 4/10 at best. I also got two beef patties, but they were burnt on the bottom--like, BLACK. The burnt crust ruined the texture, making every bite crunchy instead of flaky and balanced. Rice and peas taste like basic rice. Brown stew chicken tastes basic like bake chicken with gravy..basic. Collards were tasty but I've had better. The best thing was the beef patty. There were pictures of several celebrities on the wall. It's definitely a hole in the wall/shack. I wasn't greeted by the lady at the counter. It was actually kind of weird. She was yelling at one guy to get another guy and it seemed like I was bothering her. I literally almost walked out. Everything looked dry honestly. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas and callaloo. The jerk chicken chicken had a lot of flavor, but I could tell it had been sitting out for a while. I love Jamaican food especially jerk, but since I became a pescatarian 15 years ago, it's hard to find jerk fish. I've passed this place so many times but assumed they wouldn't have anything I could eat. Today I decided to stop in. At the time the only fish dish prepared was escovitch, which I also like, but I had my heart set on jerk. The owner/chef was so nice and accommodating, he made jerk salmon for me on the spot! And it did not disappoint! All those great jerk flavors with the right amount of heat, fantastic! I've been going to this restaurant for years. I stopped going to other Carribean restaurants on a regular occasion once I found this place. The food is delicious it's close in the neighborhood. You will see the chef in countless pictures with celebrities in his establishment. I got the large oxtail plate with double peas and rice and Mac and cheese. 3 vegetables choice comes with the plate. I've passed this place in Decatur for years, but for some reason never made it in. Well, I finally stopped by to pick up a late lunch. They have a small parking lot, which should be big enough for its patrons; you shouldn't have any problem finding an open spot. We entered the very small shop and were greeted warmly. We took a few minutes to figure out what we wanted. Wifey ordered a large Stew chicken with Mac and Cheese, rice and peas, and plantains. I ordered the Chicken Roti. We could see the staff putting the dishes together on the other side of the plexiglass, and we were ready to dig in. I didn't notice any steam coming off the food; that should have been a clue. Well, we packed up everything and headed home. We started to dig in, and we were both a little disappointed. Not only was the food not hot, it was a little bland. I've had mixed results here, especially during Covid which is understandable. But I routinely see this small business owner shopping for fresh ingredients at the DeKalb Farmers Market. It's a small venue but cleaner than others specializing in great Caribbean eats. The service is always friendly. read more

I was getting my car fixed at the shop next door when I noticed Caribbean Chicken & Fish. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but trust me when I say they do not disappoint! It's located off the side of the road so keep your eyes peeled, but it's hard to miss with all the smoke coming from the smoke pits! I felt like as soon as I walked in I was instantly transported to Jamaica; with that being said be prepared for the Jamaican banter from the owner lol I ended up ordering the curry goat roti and 10/10 would recommend. Stumbled upon this gem on my way to the Farmers Market. It's right next to the Caribbean market. You know the best food comes from the little shacks lol; so I def had to make that U turn and pull up. We walked right in and looked at the menu. They have breakfast, lunch specials, and dinner. We only got beef patties and fresh lemonade. My friend and I discovered this place while driving to Hertz. After we took one bite, we both looked at each other at the same time and said "Omg". No lie! Atmosphere: Don't be fooled by this hole-in-the-wall place. The look will deceive you of the magic that happens here. They play some Jamaican hits from back in the day on their radio system that you can hear from the road, but it's not obnoxiously loud (was happy about that). Just danced in line on the sidewalk while waiting to order. Most of the line was dancing, so it was a fun part of the experience. (Lunch time is really busy, but they work fast, so don't be scared by the line building on the sidewalk.) Customer service: Luckily, I didn't get the typical Jamaican service I'd get in NYC like I'm doing them a favor for giving them my money :/ The lady who served us was so sweet and helpful. We came the next day (it's that good!) and the young man who took our order was very patient and kind, too. Food: My curry chicken was falling off of the bone! Mac & cheese was amaaaaazing, and the cook put their foot in the rice & peas. Plantains were scrumptious, yams were bomb, and the cabbage was yummy! The greens have so much flavor. Definitely a great side. I'll try the corn bread and dumplings (fried) next time. The peanut drink (a first for me) was great to have as something sweet with a savory dish. It's really heavy (like a peanut butter smoothie), so brace yourself. Would I recommend? There were no other customers. The dish came out 'meh'. The Bakes were over fried and the Peanut Punch was runny, not thick at all. From the old faithful oxtail and goat stews to drum wood smoked jerk chicken. Highly recommend a callaloo patty. We ordered 10 lemon pepper wings & 10 smoked with 2 sides. Here is the pics y'all....I can't make this ish up!! They made us wait 30 mins for raw lemon pepper wings & the smoked wings were dried out!!! They even had the nerve to put a fried chicken butt in there as a wing!! I've been coming here for a couple of years because I can always count on getting some solid jerk chicken. I always get the small or large jerk chicken plate with rice and peas covered in oxtail gravy. For additional sides, I've gotten macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and collard greens. Their sides are pretty good, but could be better. I do love their patties though - beef and chicken are my faves, and they always seem to have an abundance of them. They don't run out of patties as often as other Jamaican spots I've been to. The place is in a little shack and is so tiny that only about 2 people max can stand at the counter to order...but those are the best types of restaurants, right? We've been wanting to try this place for the longest time, but hesitated due to the outside appearance. We finally mustered up the courage to head in and see what this place is all about. It was just about as terrifying as we thought it would be. We are not Jamaican/Caribbean food experts by any means, so we didn't know what some of the dishes were. A plexiglass screen separates you from the food and the person serving it so it's kind of hard to hear and communicate. The posted menu also doesn't clearly explain what all is included. We got a combo with jerk chicken and oxtail which came with two sides. We chose rice/peas and plantains. We also got a vegetable patty and two beef patties, as well as some kind of mango drink. Of everything, we loved the plantains. They were basically black and well caramelized. I don't eat oxtail but my bf said the serving was primarily bones. Everything is packed into a styrofoam container and all of the dishes kind of mix together with each other, which I also didn't like. The beef patties were delicate with a good flavor that wasn't too spicy. We would maybe eat there again and try other things like the wings and Mac and cheese. It also took an extraordinarily long amount of time to order... the people ahead of us had to have been high or something, they changed their minds, asked for a million things, etc. Wish there was a less stressful way to order! read more

My favorite Caribbean place at this point. It's raw and real. I'm enamored by the smokiness and the chat of the jerk chicken, the spice of the jerk sauce and the unctuous roti I order each time I visit. They are truly remarkable here. I notice that some days are different from others. They usually have curry channa and potatoes but some days it's just curry potatoes. Some days they do fresh stewed collards and others you can tell they're canned...seasoned well but you still spot the difference. Sometimes I'm allowed to mix my collards with my callaloo which is so divine, but when the elder lady (I'm guessing the owner?) is working on sundays she doesn't let me. They need to go ahead start bottling up that jerk sauce because it's one of a kind, real deal Holyfield. I always get extra to go. I also adore their salt fish patties and chicken patties. The definition of a divey food shack, and I mean that in a good way. Divey food shacks are the best. Parking exists - it's behind the shack using the driveway to the left (if you can squeeze in past the smoker and wood piles), over by the barber shop and even in the next-door garage lot (I asked about parking in the garage lot because that's where my car was. Apparently the garage people are OK with it). Super friendly people, eager to tell you whatever you want about the food. Really, really small inside where you order. Small enough that with just me, I had to move aside to let the staff come in and out through the front door. One other customer came in and it was like a crowd. Jerk chicken is really good and perhaps unlike anything else in the city. I ordered it with jerk sauce but was offered bbq sauce. As others have said, I could eat this stuff ... often. The curry chicken is maybe a notch below the jerk in goodness. Callaloo side is wonderful, so I'm glad the collard greens - one of the sides I initially ordered - weren't ready yet. Mac & cheese is pretty standard. I also asked about the 'homemade healthy drinks' and after learning about their most popular - Irish Moss, a peanut/agave concoction - I went for it. Not bad, but you need to like peanuts. I think I'll try more varieties in coming visits. They're open at 10AM but I don't really think it's a good idea to show up that early. Shortly after 11AM, when I arrived, the jerk chicken was not quite ready and the sides were still being prepared. Can't imagine they would have had much ready to go at 10. read more
