I could not be more thankful to Spooner Scotsdale and its employees. It's a long story, but something I feel worth telling incase any one else has the same hesitance or is scared. I'm a young man, and I'm not very open to physical therapy with the preconceived notion that it's only for old people, and isn't for debilitating issues like I have, more for stretching and general pain. I was extremely self conscious about coming in, and I am not comfortable with people touching me at all. I also delayed coming in for far too long, which I regret, because it was honestly, I feel, the only thing that can and did help me. I herniated a disk, and couldn't move after lifting something far too heavy. I couldn't move, I couldn't lay down, I couldn't sit or do anything without complete agony in my lower back and leg. I was unable to put on my socks, or do any normal daily tasks. This continued for about 3 days not getting better until my partner forced me to go to Spooner Scotsdale. I was very, very scared that they might tell me it's unfixable, because at the time, I didn't know what the issue was. The drive up was incredibly painful, but so worth it. I came in for an initial evaluation with Geoff, and cried pretty much the second he started talking because the pain was just unbearable, and also worried that this is something I will have to live with for the rest of my life, but Geoff was incredibly reassuring. He closed the curtain to give me some privacy, and calmed me down. He evaluated me, and after some movements and assessing, he explained what's happened. He had some spine models he pulled out to show me what's happened and helped me visualize the issue, and he kept talking to me until I fully understood what was wrong and how it happened. That was incredibly valuable to me, since up until this point, I didn't know anything except I couldn't walk or do anything really. He then helped me do some stretches and exercises, which before his explanation seemed incredibly counterintuitive to me since it just aggravated the issue more, but he explained it in such a way that I could see how it would help and was incredibly appreciative for showing me. I then explained that my schedule is very fluctuating due to work, and it would be very difficult to schedule additional follow ups, which was another big fear for me since I always thought you needed to come in consistently for a month for physical therapy, but he was extremely accommodating and showed me some home exercises and stretches to do, and printed out a sheet to take with me incase I forgot. I am genuinely impressed, that only after an hour with him, that the pain had been relived that much to the point I was able to get a ride home without much issue. Which is saying something, because before my only solution was to take enough ibuprofen to make a pharmacist queasy, which didn't even help the issue, just lessens the symptoms temporarily. I cannot put into words how phenomenal he, and every single person in that clinic was, at every step of the way. I am genuinely thankful to everyone in that clinic, and I will be every single time in the future I'm able to bend over without gritting my teeth. Scheduling is insane. It took me over 12 weeks to get in even though I told them I only had access…read moreto my insurance for 15 weeks and I'd initially been referred for six sessions. The scheduling person promised me they always had tons of openings if I got on their wait list, but the openings never came. (Then they told me it was because they kept those for established patients, but those also never opened up for me, so I think it's just extremely hard to schedule--and they can't or won't accomodate people who may need to get in sooner.) The physical therapist is pretty good and gives a lot of feedback. Some of the techs are good, others seem to be on a bit of a power trip or not paying attention and kind of just going through the motions. I think I had a different tech every time I went in. Working with the techs is often about the same as doing the exercises at home (with added bike/treadmill time); they don't really give good pointers or anything. Spooner is very slow about updating exercises in the app. You basically have to remind them. I'm glad the AC works again; it gets pretty hot in there. Also didn't realize there were more convenient locations when I booked, but that was my fault.

I have yet to meet anybody who wants to go to physical therapy after an operation. It's a long and…read moreinvolved process that can be frustrating, painful, and seemingly goes on forever. After a significant shoulder operation, I was told I had to do probably four months of physical therapy, maybe longer if I didn't do what was asked of me. Considering I wanted to be able to drive again, use a keyboard, and not have to ask my wife to help me put a shirt on, the time frame didn't bother me. At the beginning of my therapy, I had to schedule with two different therapists. It was interesting seeing the differences between them. Both were good, but fortunately, I ended up being scheduled with what I considered the superior one. Susan Medlin had been a therapist for over 25 years, all at Mayo, actually three different Mayo locations. She was always friendly and talkative, and instead of just talking about herself, she continuously asked questions about me. It was fun to talk with her. A visit never happened where Susan didn't make me feel better and taught me something new. She was supportive and enthusiastic about my progress. Yes, my therapy cost me a bunch. But, when you are seriously handicapped for whatever reason, you have to take your rehab seriously. Susan Medlin promoted my seriousness and made sure that I was doing my exercises and stretches to improve my condition in-between visits. Thanks to Susan, my overall condition vastly improved. I am very grateful.

Not only is he very knowledgeable and capable, his pleasant demeanor and ability to put one at ease instills confidence that you will progress well. They've done a good job of controlling the tendency to overcrowd and become choatic from my first visits to latest (a period spanning about 3 years).

Jacy made scheduling easy, and the communication and reminders leading up to the appointment were excellent. Likewise, on the day of my appointment, when I arrived, the receptionist was also warm, welcoming, and friendly, which made for a good first impression. That said, the experience changed significantly once the actual appointment began. One thing that immediately stood out to me on my May 11th visit was the lack of any bottled water or self-serve water station in the lobby, especially on a 100-degree Scottsdale day. It may seem minor, but patient comfort matters, and it's something I'd genuinely recommend improving. The appointment itself started with a medical assistant, Romina, doing a pre-screen while an intern observed. When Dr. Serafini entered, the dynamic quickly felt less patient-centered and more performance-driven. He dominated nearly every interaction, leaving little room for conversation or collaboration. At one point, I tried to add context about my symptoms and experience, and he abruptly responded with a very quick, "cool, cool, cool" before moving on. It felt dismissive and strangely cold. For context, I'm usually very talkative and engaged in medical appointments, but throughout this visit I found myself withdrawing because I didn't feel listened to. When discussing prior surgeries, Dr. Serafini immediately declared, "that's your problem right there," before reviewing imaging or completing a meaningful assessment. I explained that the surgery had been nearly 40 years ago and how I didn't believe adhesions to be likely only because they would have shown up by now and also, my symptom only began recently after horseback riding this year. His response felt more focused on establishing authority than understanding my situation, reminding me he'd done this for 25 years. My perspective didn't seem to matter much. And because I don't believe in arguing or peacocking, I didn't feel the need to remind him I've been in this body, feeling what's new vs what's normal for me for 46 years. The physical assessment itself often felt theatrical, almost like a demonstration for the intern observing. There was a lot of lecturing, showmanship, eye contact with the intern while speaking about concepts, and attempts to guide me toward agreement during strength testing; but not much genuine, unscripted dialogue. There were a few times where I honestly couldn't tell whether the supposed weakness he was pointing out was actually present. When this would happen, he seemed disappointed at my truth. It was only apparent some of the time. After X-rays were taken, I expected we would review them together and discuss findings. Instead, I was told to go to the front desk and schedule another hour-long appointment. I later learned I would not even be shown my X-rays, given a diagnosis, or discuss results until a follow-up visit. I paid for my appointment (assessment, x-rays, and exam), with tons of talking at me, but received NO value (diagnosis and no treatment/adjustment to kick off my treatment). I don't mind paying, when I receive value. In fact I'll be paying cash for my physical therapy appointments scheduled somewhere else. I think it's important to let other people know what to expect. That was extremely disappointing and confusing. I left having completed an exam, assessment, and X-rays -- but "without" any treatment, adjustment, diagnosis, or explanation of findings. I also had to ask basic questions while they were trying to schedule a second appointment for me, with no upfront explanation of future charges or treatment costs. I finally said, "You don't accept insurance, so I need to understand treatment costs for these appts." Only then did they provide information. Until that point, they were simply assuming the sale -- perhaps counting on some patients being too uncomfortable to pause and ask questions or decline next steps. I couldn't do that. I already had 5-6 physical therapy sessions scheduled elsewhere, a fact I had already related to the doctor that before he sent me to the front desk to sign up for physical therapy with them. Overall, the experience felt much more like a sales presentation than a healthcare appointment. They don't earn your business, but require you to continue to do business with them before they show your x-rays you've paid for, & discuss what your ailment is & get you adjusted to start feeling better. While the front-end staff and scheduling process were genuinely excellent, I personally did not feel heard, comfortable, or cared for once the doctor interaction began, and I won't be returning. And for those who need to know, they don't accept insurance. This is fine, but come into it eyes wide open since I don't know if everyone knows & it makes a difference for some.

I have been to a different Spooner location on several occasions, and they have always been great…read more My recent visit to this location, a bit closer to my home, was no different. I had injured my left foot while exercising on my treadmill at home, and Spooner got me in right away once I realized that I would need a physical therapist. I was assigned to Emily, who is as fantastic, professional, and helpful as every other Spooner therapist has been with me. She knew what she was doing, and I progressed so well that I was discharged earlier than expected. My wife has also had fantastic therapists at this location, so I highly recommend coming here if you have need of their services. A tip: The dedicated entrance to the Spooner facility is on the south side of the office building, so you'll want to park in the parking lot between the building and the freeway. Spooner has a few marked spaces in front of the sidewalk that leads to their entrance. It may not look at first like an entrance you can use, but it is. While I believe you can also access their suite through the hallway leading from the main entrance for the building, that's usually a long unnecessary walk--and depending on your injury, you might appreciate less walking. :)
