It looks like it's been 16 years since Gayle and I walked into a still-in-business Carefree Buffalo? For whatever reason (besides COVID), our OSF schedule didn't involve coming out to Jacksonville. So on our recent sojourn here, Carefree Buffalo was our fist stop (weird downtown traffic patterns permitting) was Carefree Buffalo. The nice selection of pricey and amazing made-in Oregon William Henry knives are still here, as are a nice section of ones from Santa Fe (New Mexico) Stoneworks. Of course, there's more than knives here, and they'll all nicely displayed and waiting for you to pick it up or ask about it. I ended up buying a cool (and cheap) utility knife, which pretty much kept me for spending more money. After all, I had to behave myself as Gayle was watching. :) read more

This store turned out to be the highlight of our visit to Jacksonville. This is a gift shop that sells accessaries made by local artists, expensive knives, etc. My girlfriend, my 13 year-old son, and I popped into the store just to browse. The lady behind the counter, whom I assume to be one of the owners, started having a conversation with us. She educated us about some of the merchandize in a fun and informative way. We spent more time than we had planned and left with a pair of earring and knowledge. Both my girlfriend and I thought she was a great retail person. She didn't give us any pressure or did not seem to be trying to convince us to purchase anything. She just involves us in conversations. My girlfriend is very happy with her unplanned purchase. My son and I also enjoyed the store too. I officially love this store. The selection of metal animals has grown and now I'm well on my way to having a collection. The little details are beautiful. I usually purchase a piece of jewelry as well and really enjoy hearing about the background of the artist. Those details stick with me years later. 95% of the products are Made in the U.S.A. and it is a well curated collection of objects for your home as well as accessories. You really get a sense that they look for products with high quality and craftsmanship. They are in the process of expanding the business. Soon they will open a second location, just a couple doors down, that will feature a wide range of Pendleton products and glass art. I got a preview and am very excited about their new product lines. Rude women working there! They followed us around everywhere and when my daughter bought something for 10.00 the lady laughed at us. My family has been BIG fans of Carefree Buffalo for years. This is the most beautiful store in Jacksonville. My dad has a knife collection and they have some of the most incredible knives in the world. Truly beautiful works of art. Joe has helped us with Remy leather jackets for multiple family members and the quality and detail is superb. My fiancé has also worked with Joe to create custom art pieces for our home, office, and to give as gifts. Carefree Buffalo has so many fun gifts and beautiful pieces of art. I love to walk around and see everything each time we visit Jacksonville. Joe and his team are wonderful people!! read more

There's a chain of restaurants down in the S.F. Bay Area where I lived prior to moving to Ashland. They had a sign on the door that read "This place is bad for diets". The Carefee Buffalo should have a sign reading "This place is bad for budgets." Great store and worth every penny, they sell unique products, unique expensive products but there are some bargains mixed in. Great selection of leather goods including stylish belts for men that are hard to find most other places. Contrary to the first impression the price on belts and wallets are in line or less than most department stores. I'm pretty picky when it comes to wallets and expect mine to last for a minimum of a decade, Carefee Buffalo hit the mark on that one. The Remy leather jackets will start you drooling as soon as you walk in, not inexpensive but worth every penny. Joe had one made to order for my wife and the one I liked tailored to fit me perfectly, the phrase life time purchase fits here. Men always get short shrift when it comes to jewelry, the solution if s knife from William Henry, they have to be seen to be believed. I'm a knife nut and my eyes almost popped out of my head at the selection. I've been in stores in San Francisco and Los Angeles that don't have this selection. Don't even think about visiting Jacksonville without a trip to this store. read more

NIce shopping experience. Unique stuff here. Pricey but special.

This little store has high quality art, clothing and accessories and some miscellaneous items. The owner and staff are very friendly. We hate to go in the store because we too often buy something expensive. Though we never regret the quality or artistic taste of the items. Do you want a dressy but protective motorcycle jacker? Check out the Remy leathers. ( I got my on sale for half price) What i really want to review is jewelry for men. Nothing flashy. No gold chains or rings but William Henry knives (and pens and golfer tools). The knives range is price from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. They are all small folding knives (one hand opening and closing) that are absolutely beautiful and SHARP. I am not a knife collector. I will not buy another WH knife. Keep repeating this. You can show the knife off on display in your home or office or you can carry it as a practical tool. "Let me cut that for you. Do you like this knife? It took 32 artisans to make and was sharpened by a samurai sword maker in Japan." Well other stores carry William Henry knives or you can buy them on line. They come with a DVD showing how they are made narrated by a Coyote actor from Hollywood. read more

This is one of my favorite stores in Jacksonville. I had my eye on a leather bag which the owner was willing to do a lay a way on for me. I decided I would buy when I was ready. I visited today and found my bag was sold, but my second choice, which I love, was available. After months of drooling over these bags for months, I finally bought it. The quality is fantastic; it is one of a kind; and the service was top notch. I can't wait to buy my next purchase! read more

I don't get it. The simplest rule in retail is, I assume, something like: Make the customer comfortable and happy to be there. We drove 2 1/2 hours to peruse Jacksonville stores again. I well remember wanting to buy an expensive knife as an heirloom gift for my adult son the first time we went into Carefree Buffalo. I was looking forward to possibly doing that on this visit. I was looking at greeting cards and a woman behind the counter started talking to me about the cards I was looking at. She had been watching me. Then I stepped a few feet away and was looking at a hat and she had stepped out and was staring at me. The store was crowded. I was dressed well enough. I have never stolen from a store in my life. She was just staring at me. I don't know about you, but I can't shop when I am being stared at. I point blank said, "I feel like I am being watched." I turned and paid for two cards I'd selected and promptly left, never looking at the expensive knives I had wanted to select from. So much for that! (This happened Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018.) read more

Carefree Buffalo is one of my favorite stores ever, and I've been in LOTS of stores that carry unique, handmade items as they do. Joe is great and has helped me with a number of special order Sticks pieces (wonderful handmade/painted wood furniture and decorative items). just received my beautiful diamond micro-band from the Carefree Buffalo. I was visiting a friend in sweet Jacksonville and we popped in this wonderful shop on one of our many walks. I immediately feel in love with this ring from jeweler Thom Gregg, who is represented exclusively there. I had a hunch that my boyfriend was about to propose, and when he did I told him that this was the ring I wanted. Buying something so important from a shop hundreds of miles away could be stressful; but the owner Joe made the process simple and even pleasant. As the ring is die struck and therefore custom made I had to be certain of the size....Joe walked my through that process and was absolutely stellar about communicating every step along the way. I would definitely recommend purchasing any item from the Carefree Buffalo with confidence...no matter how far away you are. read more
