Elk Street has that timeless "Main Street USA" feel that compells you to shop there so you can support the American dream. Picket Fence simply caught my eye because it is a corner store and they had a nice selection of antique glassware on display in the window. Since I was looking for a glassware gift, I got sucked in. I had no idea what I was in for. Picket Fence is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. It's your typical antique mall where vendors rent out little cubbies of space to display their wares. The walkways between the cubbies are spacious enough to accomodate patrons with mobility issues, but some of the cubbies themselves are so crammed with merchandise I could barely navigate my able body 360 degrees without knocking something over. Selection really ran the gammut. Lots of glassware, kitchen wares, collectibles, kitsch. Some books, albums, a little clothing, jewelery. And allllll the way at the back of the store (where it's definitely NOT handicap accessible) is a smattering of antique furniture that made me wish I was in the market for a rocking chair. Prices were overall, extremely reasonable, much more so than I am acccustomed to in NJ. I only visited one other antique shop in Elizabethton so I can't really compare it to others, but I think you could spend about week or so exploring them all. Sampled one of their teas, Apricot Brandy, and it was amazing! My second visit was for a Japanese culture class. Another wonderful experience shared with many along with delicious tea. First floor is cozy with plenty of nooks to sit and be comfortable. I see patrons working, reading or crafting enjoying a drink or a pastry the establishment offers. You can also purchase loose leaf tea they serve as well as their branded merchandise along with local designers. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and I am looking forward to many more visits to the Philosopher's House.

It had the aroma of books -- old books, to be precise. It's in a nondescript strip center and is very ordinary looking from the outside. It has a warehouse feel. Walking in, I could tell it wasn't what I was expecting -- a warehouse -- but more of a treasure trove of books, vinyl, DVDs, comic books, sheet music, and a few miscellaneous antiques. I can't say I figured out how it was set up, certainly by section, but there were hardcovers and paperbacks of many genre scattered. Or at least it seemed that way. Each section was roughly sorted alphabetically by author, so that made searching easier. I didn't see a lot of duplication in titles. I had only a limited amount of time before they closed. It was a kid-in-a-candy-store moment; too much to explore and limited to what I could grab in the short window of time I had available. It wasn't nearly enough to do the exploring I wanted. But, with that said, I did manage to pick up a couple of titles I haven't seen by authors I have and that was a win for me. As with most used bookstores, the price is about half of the cover price, except for the first edition, rare books, or collectibles. It's a good place to try out a new author or series without the financial commitment of a new bookstore; or if you want to try your luck with the comic books or vinyl. There's a separate display case of Elvis recordings and memorabilia -- this is Tennessee, after all, and I'd expect nothing less. Just a fun store all around.

I can very easily see this being the next big antique/vintage store for Johnson City. Truly loved the reasonably priced WIDE variety of tasteful 70s/80s vinyl. Not your average Goodwill stuff. I was there specifically for a dresser with mirror and by myself. So, I walked right back out of the store and drove to Baileyton Antiques where they loaded my purchase for me. I'll go back but I think they should hire someone twice weekly to load furniture for their customers like Village Antiques and the antique stores in Elizabethan.
