I wish I could leave zero stars. I am currently stuck in a parking lot because a routine oil change with no problems is too much to ask for. I can't call this store directly(why?), the customer service rep put me on hold and transferred me to a voicemail without any discussion. I will never come back. edit 3/9/2024 the University Ave CarX are a bunch of bums too. they said everything was good, but my vehicle stated low engine oil two hours later. Do not take your car here. I took my car here for an oil change several months ago and my car broke down a few weeks later. Both Car-X and the Napleton dealership in town looked at it and told me that I would need a new engine, which would have cost me thousands of dollars. Turns out, when I took my car in for the oil change, Car X put the incorrect oil filter on my car and that is what caused it to break down. I called the Midas on University in Urbana for an estimate on an engine replacement and the manager, Dave, wanted to take another look at my car to make sure the engine actually needed to be replaced. Midas found the issue with the filter and fixed my car for $150. It has been driving great since! Take your car there instead - they saved me from a huge headache that Car-X caused. I could have spent thousands of dollars that I didn't need to spend due to Car-X's incompetence. read more

I have been tolerating a rattling heat shield on my car for months, and had been toying with the idea of fixing it up myself. When I dropped off my girlfriend (who got great service here on her tires to boot) I asked how I should go about fixing it myself. One of the worst businesses I've ever been to. The techs are macho, aggressive, and slow at their work. I waited nearly three hours for an oil change. And despite the sign on the door, no COVID protocols are enforced here--customers are forced to wait in a tiny waiting room where not all patrons are wearing masks. I had a tire rotation and balance at the CarX on Neil St. on October 28. When I left the car started making a very loud sound in the rear. As I was driving later, the driver side rear tire came completely off the car!! When we put the tire back on, to move it out of the middle of a busy street, two of the lug nuts were completely stripped!! How they let me drive away knowing that the lug nuts were stripped is completely unacceptable!! This place is not safe!! They are not able to issue a refund because I paid cash. When I called Jason, the manager today to discuss different options for a refund he HUNG UP on me!! They are very rude and unprofessional!! This place is trash!! read more

Back in September i went in because my car was over heating. Dave handled me when i walked through the door and was a complete prick. He would not give me the time of day to discuss the problem I was having and the research i did to find out what the issue could be. They charged mje $150 and stated that i needed new hoses. They told me the job would take an hour to complete and they would call me when my car was ready to go. 3 hours later i called and Dave testily told me that he would let me know when my work was done. I finally went in 2 hours after that to pick it up. I didn't even make it home before my car was overheating again so i went back, and after being rudely rushed along and cut off, they replaced the thermostat that i had put in saying that it was installed incorrectly. I was charged another $75 for the work. I then tried to go home and couldn't even get out of the parking lot before my car was over heating again. Took it back and was told that it was the water pump that needed to be replaced for $350. i wised up and went to a private mechanic that was referred to me by a friend and got the issue fixed. DO NOT go here under any circumstances!!! The service was horrible and the mechanics (if thats what you want to call them) were shady and will try to bilk you out of as much money as possible. Its too bad for good honest mechanics that they are tainted by the "mechanics" that work at this garbage establishment. C'mon Champaign, lets avoid them and gleefully watch this shop go under!! read more

I orignally erroneously posted this review to the Car-X on South Neil. Sorry. I meant this one. The lady brought her beater in for an oil change with a coupon and they took a look at the front end, which I knew had issues, but I was treating conservatively because the car is just not worth that much. My goal is to keep the thing safely running, forgoing a new car payment for as long as possible. The guys at the Car-X opted for the "scare the shit out of the pretty girl" technique of auto repair salesmanship. Not only did they have her sobbing and terrified of the prospect of their $2k+ estimate (which was padded by $700-1000), but they implied that she was a terrible person for letting it get "that bad" and "dangerous". For the record, yes, parts were worn and piecemeal replacement was appropriate, but at no point was the vehicle dangerous, nor was an immediate full front end replacement warranted on that car. I was well aware of the situation and was monitoring it. There was no reason for the Car-X staff to treat her like a toddler in need of their stern paternalistic guidance and correction, nor was there a need to condescend with the sexist approach that gives all mechanics a bad name. I spoke with a manager about the incident, and he apologized for whoever said all this to her, but I could tell there was no contrition in his voice and that he would do nothing to correct the behavior. It could have been him that did it, but in any event, I have no doubt that the staff at this Car-X will continue to treat women in this way. read more

I think that Car-X has a superb waiting area, with a panoramic window area that allows you to see what's going on with the cars. It's pretty darn cool. Additionally, they were the only place in the Champaign area that was able to take my car the day that I called. Tatman's Collision referred me here, so I am pretty sure that Car-X does a good job. However, I felt that they should have called me more often with updates about my car. I also felt that Dave should have listened more carefully to what I was saying was wrong with my car, instead of rushing me along and cutting me off. Anyway, they did fix the problem. I was quoted 30-45 minutes for a wheel change (I had all the necessary parts). The process took an hour, and the moment I arrived at the register to ask about the status of my service, the person quickly handed me the keys. This makes me wonder how long he's actually had my keys for. He told me the price and handed me no invoice. Then I was charged for a tire disposal service of $3.50 even though nothing was disposed. I asked for a refund and he gave it back to me. I really don't like that. I went back to my car and noticed that they replaced my metal valve stem cap with a shitty plastic one. I also didn't like that. I went back into the shop and asked for my original cap, and they quickly gave it back to me. This seems like a very dishonest place and I'm not a fan of providing my car, which is something I love and pay detailed attention to, to a company that doesn't seem to pay attention to the details and was dishonest to me three times in one hour. read more

The quality of service here is absolutely fantastic. I brought in my '06 Audi after banging up a rear wheel quite badly (a power-slide gone awry...), and they gave her excellent care. They were quick to hop on the problem, good at interacting with my insurance (who had no complaints about Car-X trying to do any unnecessary work), and kept me up to date as the problem(s) got solved and parts came in. After a few things weren't quite perfect (just a natural occurrence for the number of things that went wrong), they bent over backwards to accommodate me. Above and beyond. I was looking for a place to get my new replacement rim put on my car, however, everywhere I called was booked for Saturday morning. The Car X staff here, specifically Chad, helped squeeze me in Saturday morning. Chad explained the process and made sure he answered any questions I had. He also explained worst case scenario that may have to be addressed with my TPMS, which was thankfully didnt occur, but was nice to know what to expect if it came to that issue. They were quick and efficient despite squeezing me into their schedule. They also went above and beyond, putting my old rim in the box I had the new rim in and placing it in my trunk along with putting my donut spare back into storage. Chad went over everything that was done and it was very reasonably priced for what I had done. I will be recommending this franchise if anyone asks me and I will keep them in mind if I have any issues in the future. read more

I just did an oil change with these guys, BEWARE OF PRICES. They told me my oil change started at $47.99 and I ended up paying $59.99 with a labor fee!!! That doesn't seem like a lot of money, BUT HIDDEN FEES! Never trust them! This is extremely upsetting. I don't mind paying good service, I would have paid $59.99 if I knew it would be that. But instead, they overcharged me and made it seem like it was just taxes! $10 in taxes? I don't think so. Watch Out!!! read more

Got a tire leak this morning and was so worried about the schedule. The technician patched it in about half an hour and charged for about $25. Efficiently solved my problem. I love Car-X! The manager, Dave, is really nice and helpful. My car had been on the fritz for several months and no other mechanic was able to fix it (and they charged me an arm and a leg to not fix my car). Dave got my car fixed for just a little over $100, with a warrantee for the life of the car. The waiting area is clean and bright, with a good selection of magazines (including magazines with primarily female readerships). Car-X also will give you free rides anywhere in Chambana while they fix your car. read more

I bought new tires and 20k miles later they were shot. Fortunately, they have a 50k mile warranty on them. Unfortunately, I've moved cross country and they won't take the word of a reputable car dealer that the tires were defective. Bummer. read more

Extreme and unnecessary markups PLUS unauthorized and poorly done work! My car had some rough shifting so I took it in for a diagnosis. They told me I had a bad valve cover gasket which was leaking oil. They quoted $1048 - saying that even though they didn't know the condition of the ignition coils and spark plugs, they'd replace them in addition to the valve cover gasket. Plus, despite me only going in for a diagnosis, they filled up my (already-full) oil, which resulted in it being filled to about two inches past full. They did this without my knowledge or consent. I had a friend order just the valve cover gasket and do the fix for me. The part was only $22. My car has run fine since. I went somewhere else for another diagnosis to see if the fix worked, and they said the car was fine now. Altogether, I got a ridiculous quote with unnecessary and expensive fixes plus work that I didn't even ask for and was done poorly. If you go here, get a second opinion to see if the price is warranted. Or just don't go here since they're shady about messing with cars without consent. read more

Granted, I've only been here for oil changes, but I've been impressed every time. Quick service, good explanation of any additional work needed (I had an air filter replaced, they brought it out to show me), and you can view them doing the work from their waiting room. They sometimes require an appointment, but sometimes not. I'd recommend calling ahead, especially if you are looking to go in the afternoon or on Saturdays. I prefer going during the week, the manager is more friendly and always remembers to give me the $5 discount on my service. read more

I set an appointment to drop off my vechicle in the morning and followed there direction to leave my key in the drop off box. They did not work on the car for two days. When I called to find out the status of my vechicle he was rude to me and my husband. He actually cursed at my husband over the phone before he hung up. We went in thinking we needed an alignment and our tires rotated. They checked through everything, let us know we only needed our tires rotated and saved us from spending money we didn't need to. They had great customer service and we walked out happy. read more

I never go there after I figured out that they changed the front tires of my car with wrong ones that are cheaper than the tires that were supposed to be installed. I actually don't understand why the rate in Google is so high, like 4.6. The service at this Car-X is great. I was in Champaign from out-of-town and the air conditioning on my car stopped working. This-Car-X agreed to look at my car near its closing time. While doing so, these guys checked the level of refrigerant, tested for leaks, vacuumed the compressor and determined that the cause of the malfunctioning a/c was a bad circuit. Unfortunately, my car has circuit panels in 10 different locations and Car-X was unable to pinpoint the faulty circuit within the short time it had the car. At the end of the day, despite the services Car-X performed, it did not charge me anything. Great service and I was treated very well by the staff. The reason I am not giving a five-star review is that I don't have a basis to rate the quality of repairs actually made. read more

CarX offers detailing and I have been using the Bradley/Prospect location for detailing for several years. A full detail is usually $99 but you can get a better deal if you watch for specials. I take them a car three or four times a year and they do a great job buffing out the paint and a solid job cleaning the interior - I've always been satisfied with the quality of work - it's a good value for $100. I also take them my wife's car and my mom's car and I trust them to work on my mom's car. read more

I paid $45 to find out why my cooling fan near the radiator wasn't working. They told me it was a computer chip. Parts and labor would be just over $650. I brought it do a different mechanic for a separate problem. He also noticed my blower fan wasn't working. He said it was a switch on the AC/Heater control unit. The part was $200 and labor was $70. The second mechanic fixed the same problem by replacing a different part for less than half the price quoted by Car-X. read more

Future Customers Beware! I am not very handy with cars and thought my brakes needed fixing. I took my car in and they agreed that they needed fixing.They came back with a quote for a couple of thousand of dollars! On it was every part a brake or tire touched and strongly recommended upgrades on various parts of the car. I may not know much about cars but after I asked a few questions, I could tell I was being upsold. I decided not to do anything that day......and THANK GOD! I got a second opinion and was told the reason I felt my brakes weren't working well is because the brake pedal was a little stuck and my brakes had 30-40,000 miles left. Unless you have a considerable amount of car knowledge, watch out....or you might end up paying for unnecessary repairs! read more

I want to say thanks to guys over at CarX on Bradley. I go there for my mechanical problems but today I went in for a full detail cleaning service. All i can say is Dave and his team took care of me. My car looks, smells, and feels amazing! I had a little bleach spill accident on my backseat floor and thanks to them my carpet looks as good as new. Immediately after the spill i treated it with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and let it sit and dry. Well unfortunately i let it sit way too long and the mixture dried up hard on the floor. By sure luck one day some of it came up but still left a nasty looking mess. Now there is completely no indication that there was spill. I definitely recommend them to get the job done right! Thank you! The nice part is that I didn't know they offer transportation to near by locations when you drop your car off. And the staff is friendly and professional! Huge plus! read more

This place was amazing! I called the day before to schedule an appointment, thinking it would be a few days before I could get in. They got me in the next morning! I had an issue with my airbag coil, while Sullivan Parkhill wanted over $400 to fix it, CarX was able to fix it for $200. Last week was my first time at CarX. I made my appointment online and was immediately called by Dave to verify my date and time. I was having my car detailed (with a coupon - thank you very much!) and was absolutely amazed at the friendliness and professionalism of Dave and the employees. When I got my car back I couldn't believe how great of a job they did. When I was reading a paper later that day, I saw the owner of CarX was a Champaign native and graduate of Champaign Central. He was being recognized and it was nice to see a story of a local person who has become so succesful in the business world - and it all started in Champaign! Update: This week I took my "dog van" in for a detail. For several years I took my dogs (4 rescues) to Georgia and Arizona several times a year. I don't have small dogs. They are all large dogs and my van was THEIR vehicle. (Are you getting the idea of what it looked like after 7 years of dog hauling? LOL) I certainly wasn't expecting miracles with a well used "dog van". I didn't have rides that day and Dave was quick to offer their shuttle service. The driver was very pleasant and when he picked me up to go get the van, we had a nice conversation all the way from my home. I couldn't believe the job they did on my van!! It was all shiny and brand new looking. The inside was so clean, surfaces were clean and shiny and it smelled good! I really appreciate Dave and his staff and look forward to getting my oil changed too! read more

I would give this rating a minus 5 if I could! I came in just for brake pads and ended up getting talked into rotors. They are very poor quality rotors, look horrible on my Honda and weren't the rotors I had requested/expected (the rotor was not manufacturer recommended). The worst part, is that when they worked on my car they destroyed my alloy wheels, they scratched the hell out of them and tore up all of my chrome lug nuts! They caused thousands of dollars of damage! My rims/lug nuts were near perfect before I came in for their so-called service! When I tried talking to them about it they blew me off, refused to give me the name or the number of the manager, when I did get his number "Jeff" the so called manager never returned my messages. We called the corporate office's customer service "Christina" and got the same blow off! It is totally unbelievable to me that a business can do this and act this way toward it's customers!!! When I look at what they did to my car, I want to cry! read more

Came here from out of state to attend U of I. When I got into town, my FORD truck made a squeaking sound. Know a mechanic back home and had him listen to it, and he told me it was the belt. Dave at Car X stated I needed a cam shaft (part which cost $300). When I left car wasn't squeaking but it was raining. About a week later the squeaking returned. Because I am a grad student taking a full load M-F and only get paid monthly and often take the bus.. I took it back within 60 days. Then he said, I needed parts that connect to my belt, another $300. I left to go get a second opinion. Turns out the wrong belt was placed on my truck at a Jiffy Lube which was causing the squeaking sound. Bought a new motorcraft belt at Worden Martin FORD (on Neil) for $100. (Saved $200) and guess what? No squeaks. I have noticed that if you have an IL license plate you do get better deals. If you are from out of state and have a FORD, I recommend taking it to a ford dealer--if you take it to Worden Martin Ford ask for Jeff. He is great and honest. read more

Originally going in for an oil change, I asked the staff to also remove the Nav. box from under my passenger seat and get the serial number off the bottom of the physical box so that I could get an update for my system. After doing my oil change (and about 4 other expensive maintenance jobs that I did not ask for but they said were absolutely necessary) they ended up charging me $600+ for these repairs, but forgot to give me the serial number. I scheduled another appointment for them to get these numbers which they had charged me labor for, waited an hour in their shop, and got the wrong numbers. I went back again explaining they had to get the numbers on the bottom of the unit. Gave me the wrong numbers AGAIN... So I brought it in one last time and the front desk person (Dave) asked me "What's your problem? My guy gave you all the numbers" I then explained they had just looked on the back of the case, they had to actually remove the case and take out the system with a deep well socket which was the whole reason I went there in the first place as I didn't have the tools, he responded with attitude "Well... If you want us to take it out of the case i'm going to have to charge you for labor again. Or you can just do it yourself". So I took my keys and will be going anywhere else from now on.
