So this guy might have been a little too good at making me feel comfortable when I was looking for someone to install a remote starter in my ride. Courteous, professional, knowledgeable, you could tell he's been doing 12 volt work for years. After arranging the install at a great price through email, I stopped by his garage with my baby, chatted for a bit, watched him work for a minute, left him the keys, and took a bus to the nearest Starbucks. I knew Alicia would be in good hands. A little while later it hit me--I had just handed my baby, her keys, and $200 in new equipment over to a guy I just barely met off of Craigslist... for all I knew he was long gone, my beautiful black salt-covered ride getting dismantled in some chop shop, never to be seen again. I started freaking out, imagining the worst when he didn't text me back immediately. But he answered a phone call and updated me on his progress, which allowed my heart rate to slow to about 340. After getting kicked out of Starbuck's a few hours later, I dropped by his garage -- he was still finishing up the install, but at least my ride was still in one piece! Actually 4-5 pieces. Gotta remove kick plates and quarter panels to get to the wires for the install. I helped him out with the last few details of the remote starter installation while he taught me a thing or two about car electrical systems. I bought a stereo receiver for a road trip so that I could listen to my iPod in the car without an FM transmitter (ew). I was fully prepared to install myself for the first time: I had obsessively watched YouTube videos and downloaded install guides, but I lost track of time and found myself two days before departure with a shitty CD deck. After Soundz Good tried to rip me off on the installation of a plug-and-play navigation lock bypass device for my Lexus SUV (Lexus won't let the driver or passenger use the navigation menu when the car is in motion, which is incredibly annoying), I did a Yelp search and found a ton of great reviews for Robert.. Took my stepmother's Lexus to Robert to get an XM interface and auxiliary input installed on the factory stereo. Overall, a great experience for several reasons. First, he was much cheaper than the dealership's quote to install the same modules while still offering great service. (He honored his quote and beat his quoted time.) Second, he was great about quickly replying to phone calls and e-mails. Third, in these conversations, he was happy to offer advice about the best way to go. Most importantly, the installation was quick and clean and the (small) XM antenna is the only thing that doesn't look completely factory standard. Finally, when I told him that I was thinking of going the Crutchfield route for my own new car stereo and installing myself, he talked with me about it for a few minutes, reviewed some head units with me, and told me to be in touch with any questions I had--all for something I wouldn't be paying him for. Sure, Robert is competent, professional, and inexpensive. Especially so, for that matter. I, though, consider those as prerequisites for a professional in a service-based industry. But here is why Robert is a total outlier-he possesses conviction and a sense of humanity in the way he conducts his business. Find THAT at Best Buy. I called for a simple quote on a simple stereo installation, and he spoke with me for close to thirty minutes with no commitment whatsoever to an appointment. His demeanor was low-key, warm, but totally confident. Not once did I feel like I was a) bothering him, or b) dealing with a hack. It was immediately apparent that he was incredibly experienced, and genuinely concerned with providing me with answers to my (presumably very rookie) questions. After realizing that I was in no way capable of doing the installation on my own, I set an appointment with him. His service was nothing less than thorough. He is exhaustively detail-oriented. I'm talking like setting-my-clock-in-perfect-sync-with-his-cell-phone-custom-tailoring-every-setting-on-my-deck detail-oriented. I wanted to write this review today, the same day I got my alarm/starter installed by Robert because I was so pleased by how well everything was done. This guy really knows what he's doing and you cannot go wrong by choosing him to work on your automotive electronic needs. First of all, today was the first measurable snowfall Chicago has gotten in months but that did not stop Robert from doing his thing. Unfortunately for Robert he is currently working outdoors and not in a heated garage but through the snow and cold, he kept cranking it out without any complaints. He is so professional that I was comfortable enough to leave my Subaru in his hands while I was nice and toasty at a near by coffee shop. Mind you I only met this guy like 5 minutes prior and I already didn't mind leaving my car with him. After checking back with him about an hour and a half in the installation I found him reading the poorly written manual from the alarm/starter unit I purchased online. It was clear he was having a frustrating time trying to match the mismatched wires from the unit I provided but he never got me worried that he would not be able to get it to work. He worked through the problems and eventually got everything working as it should. He definitely knows what he is doing considering I did not buy the most user friendly alarm/starter unit out there. (A little advise: Spend some money on your unit and maybe buy a more mainstream alarm/starter with nice clear diagrams just to avoid all the unnecessary troubleshooting that Robert has to do.) Remote Starter Installation. I've searched high and low for THE Pro who: (1) Executes the installation with precision at the first try. No one wants to experience those "remote starter install gone bad" horror stories in Chicago winter. (2) Charges a reasonable price and up front about pricing components (no hidden fees..etc) (3) Gives honest recommendations based on the needs of the clients not on the needs to push for inventory turnover you would experience with some stores. I didn't know him prior to my Car's starter installation, but I sure am glad I found THE Pro--Robert. He demonstrated the level of precision I required. I called and texted him at least 10 times with ALL kinds of remote starter questions. Manufacture could have hired me to do Users Manual Q&A write up. What impressed me was the easiness about him (but NOT sleaziness. Major difference) which you can tell came from years of excellence at one's chosen profession. His price was on par with (if not lower than) competitors and honored his price quote. Do your research on devices, of course. But, at some point, do yourself a favor and stop driving yourself crazy in the remote-starter-lingo land. Run it by Robert. He will listen to your circumstances and will recommend a device that suits your need and budget. I now recommend him to all my friends who need the car wire work done.
