I came across MotorCityHDJ on Yelp, where I opened a thread looking for an affordable DJ in the…read moreDetroit area. Their services came highly recommended, stating they had a ton of experience and were all-around nice guys. I was already on the fence about having a DJ as it was. We were having an afternoon wedding and were trying to keep costs low. The reception was only 3.5 hours long... I needed a good price in order to actually book someone. I already had a few quotes and wasn't impressed with any of the prices, so what did I have to lose? I went to their website to do some research and gave them a call. I got Brett, who was incredibly friendly over the phone. He totally understood our situation about having a DJ but gave us hope that there's good DJs out there willing to give a good price on a Sunday wedding. We met him at a local Starbucks to sign the agreement. He went over every section of the contract in detail so we completely understood what he was responsible for and what we were responsible for. And he was incredibly friendly. His personality type gets along with everyone. I love people like that. He accepted payment through Paypal, which was incredibly convenient for us. His website was really intuitive, with detailed forms for us to fill out with details about the ceremony, the timeline of the reception and even a music form so we could choose what songs we wanted him to play. On one of the forms, I made it clear what music I didn't want to hear and he totally stuck with that at the reception. One thing I totally appreciated was how Brett was willing to do the outdoor music preceding the ceremony for no extra charge. We were having an extremely short ceremony, so I just wanted music to lead us down the aisle. We offered to pay extra but he said it wasn't a big deal. How sweet is that? Up until the day of the wedding, Brett stayed in perfect contact with me. He even called me the day of the wedding to make sure I was staying calm (rain on my wedding day when the ceremony was supposed to be outside... of course I wasn't calm.) But it was a nice gesture. The ceremony was moved inside and Brett was awesome with the change of plans. He still played our processional music, jazzy music during dinner and finally dance music after dinner was served. One detail we totally loved was that Brett wore a pink and purple tie so he matched our wedding colors! Small detail that made a big difference. Everyone told me they loved our DJ. Some people even thought he was a personal friend of ours because he was so friendly and personable while on the mic. He played the exact music that I wanted to hear at my reception... classic rock with current dance hits mixed in. It's like he knew me my whole life with the way he nailed my musical preferences. He did perfect. I couldn't say enough nice things about MotorCityHDJ. They turned us from an "on the fence" couple to "we totally needed a DJ" couple.

He has clear passion for dancing and for sharing his amazing gift with others. He also has the right ATTITUDE to be an effective instructor. Patient, understanding, knowing how to work with "room temperature IQ" types who are "legends in their own minds", and effectively dealing with Fred Astaire wannabes with two left feet, Dorian gave all the people in the class COMPETENCE and CONFIDENCE, when it was clear that he was so, so, so much better than those in the class. I simply cannot give a stronger recommendation to this outstanding teacher. He is a fabulous dancer with loads of talent but makes everyone feel that they are making good progress. If I had to select just one person to teach me ballroom dancing for an important event (holiday party, wedding, etc.), I would entrust that awesome responsibility to Dorian Deaver. It is similar to recruiting Michael Jordan or LeBron James to teach a basic high school basketball clinic. Damn! You simply cannot do better. Recommend heartily! -------------- Disclosure: I did not receive anything (not even a pair of stinky socks) for submitting this review. Other than being a former student, I have no connection with Mr. Deaver. Good luck!

He met us in Lansing, MI on a specific day because we are from Seattle, WA. We liked the online system he showed us where you can pick songs and setup your day with forms through the internet. We had 2 main issues - see below. Downfall after you submit your forms (wedding day schedule, first dance song, intro song..) it was hard to change after that. I emailed the main person and asked for certain song for our inrtoductions (it was different than what we submitted) and he said it was fine. On our wedding day, the song we wanted was NOT playing it was the first one we picked. Although, this song was fine we were disappointed in the lack of details on his part. Another issue was we had asked for a projector and screen for a slideshow. We were unaware that they would not supply a method to show the slideshow (why would we know that?). So the thumbdrive we had would not work and no slideshow! They had a DVD player - but I think they need to upgrade a bit in this category. The DJ was a different person than the main person and he did wonderful!! He played music that kept the dance floor moving, infomed me and my husband when certain things would happen. He was very nice and knew what he was doing. If you decide to go with Jump Start request Lucas as your DJ - amazing! He also did our ceremony music - which went very well.

There was never a moment during the night that the dance floor wasn't full with our family and friends dancing. My husband and I have been to many weddings in the past, and we have never seen a DJ as energetic or who genuinely loves what they do, as what we experienced with T as our DJ. When you book a DJ like T who has mastered the craft, you have peace-of-mind knowing you have someone who can professionally curate your reception and isn't only playing from a set list of music. The people in the office are very nice and helpful through the process of choosing your professionals for your wedding day, making payments, pre-wedding planning, post-wedding music selections... they were great on everything! We hired 2 wedding photgraphers and a videographer. They arrived at the location for pre-wedding pictures on time (actually they were early). They gave us very good direction during the photo/video session. In the house we were getting ready they even moved stuff around to make sure we would have great pictures. On the phone conversation with Ilze, our main photographer, I explained to her the big problem I have about having my eyes closed in most pictures. She listened and made sure to check that she had good shots with my eyes open. She was also very efficient through formal family and romantic pictures to make sure we could have the pictures done within our short time frame ( a bit over 1 hour). She was very friendly and the pictures turned out amazing!! Tracy, our second photographer, also did an amazing job! She took great shots of the guys before the cerimony. I also loved how well she captured the details of the decoration in the reception venue.. the centerpieces, the guest book, the cake, the gift table... all the details we spend so much time planning but we barely get to enjoy during the wedding and now we can remember them forever through her pictures. Patruck was our videographer, he was also very nice, from the phone conversation till the end of the wedding. We still didn't receive our wedding video, but i am 100% sure it will be amazing just like everything that Mike Staff have done.
