Simplifying experiences into a 5 star system is one of the biggest challenges of reviewing in the social media world; fortunately I have all of this space to explain why over all Capital University is a great place to receive an education.
Capital students have the opportunity to join a variety of student groups that encompass social, religious, career oriented, and service opportunities allowing them venues to be involved in whatever capacity they choose. Social life is somewhat stunted by the overbearing, confrontational, and generally rude police presence in Bexley(the community in which the campus is located), however the Public Safety at Capital does a phenomenal job at keeping students safe and working with student groups to ensure safe social events can ensue within reason.
Capital University at the top level has some of the most capable leadership in the area; unfortunately they inherited a very broken system several years ago and are just now starting to reap the rewards of their 180 degree turn from about 5 years ago. President Bowman has shown compassion for Greek students who are consistently harassed by a deeply flawed pseudo judicial system that offers vague explanations of a student dignity code and leaves a great deal up to interpretation. Dr. Ashbrook is constantly willing to help students who come into his office with problems ranging from class scheduling to professor grievances. He, as well as Dr. Bowman, both maintain lines of communication with students and faculty looking for progressive ideas that could make Capital a better experience for students.
The professors at Capital are what I believe set it apart from other institutions of higher learning. Throughout my time at Capital my professors have been advisers, counselors, mentors, as well as friends. They regularly took time out of their already overloaded schedules to make sure that I understood a concept or to talk with me about an idea inspired by a lecture. Occasionally when I would try to get out of work they were able to see through basic flattery and told me, "Tony just get your work done." On the other hand, when major issues in my life did come up they were compassionate and sincere in their efforts to help me in whatever way they could. I received my internship at Behavioral Science Specialists a 5-star psychological firm where, after the honest advise from a professor, chose to peruse a career outside the field of psychology and have not been happier since.
Capital is not perfect, but from what I can tell no university is. Capital is a place that you can learn, grow, and develop the skills necessary to be competitive in whatever field you choose. The Cap family includes a wealth of alumni, young and old, willing to mentor students and help them navigate the very competitive, sometimes hostile job market, and with the economy the way it is the importance of networking cannot be understated. With a growing, motivated, young alumni base committed to making Capital a better place to attend, school improvements over the next several years will be dramatic.
Looking forward, Capital has a great deal to be optimistic about. With building improvements on the agenda, admissions up significantly over the past 5 years, and a growing Greek life community the overall experience at Capital will continue to justify the increase expense over state schools. The athletic department consistently puts competitive motivated teams onto the field supported by the student body. A great deal of the drawbacks to the university are already being addressed and with the current leadership I would expect things to continue to get better.
